Voice control and smart home

I must be be being a bit thick, and this is obviously not a huge problem,but: Why can’t I make Alexa turn my Beam on by saying, ‘Alexa, turn on the TV’ like on the ads? I can say, ‘Alexa, turn off the TV’ and she will, but I have to say, ‘Alexa, turn on the lounge’ to turn the TV on? It took me a lot longer than you might imagine to work out how to turn it on by voice at all, I was shouting all sorts of things at her. 🆒

Got it plugged into the ARC and Alexa is working but it doesn’t control my TV. Does it not work with Directv? Thanks

I'm new to the Sonos ecosystem and purchased a Sonos One to replace an old Echo. So far I have really enjoy the music playback and quality of the sound. But compared to Amazon's Echo line, are the microphone significantly less sensitive on the One. Nearly 50% of the time I try to trigger Alexa in a quiet room (no background noise) and normal speaking volume, nothing happens. I would have to raise my voice repeatedly until I'm nearly yelling to wake Alexa. My old Echo in the same position in the Kitchen could be triggered with a mumbling voice, even with the water tap running. I've tried some of the troubleshooting suggestions on other threads by restarting or turning the mic on and off. Is there some settings or way to increase the insensitivity? As it stands right now, it's just not usable as a smart speaker.

I subscribe to Digital Interactive / Radiotunes and have added (using Manage > Add Radio Station) those streams (each with a unique URL that includes my paid subscription identifier) to my Sonos as "added radio station". In the Sonos UI, they show up under "Radio by TuneIn" even though they are not actually TuneIn stations. Now it would be nice if I could get Alexa to select those stations. I have been trying to give the stations unique names that don't match anything else in my library or any real station ("rhubarb soap" etc.) but apparently since these are not real TuneIn stations they are not found via the Alexa search interface. There needs to be a Sonos interface so that stations that have been added by the user directly can be selected via Alexa. If that means taking these added stations out of the TuneIn tab, then that might even reduce the confusion. Please, Sonos, please!

1. Will you be able to use the Alexa and Google assistants at the same time based simply on the wake word you use or will you only be able to use one at a time. I assume if you can only activate one at a time you would choose which one to be activate through the Sonos app. 2. With Alexa on the Sonos One you are prevented from making wifi calls the way you can with the Amazon Echo. When Google Assistant support finally arrives will you be able to make wifi calls using it the same you can with the Google Home? It wold be nice if someone from Sonos would reply even if it was just to say that we don't have answers to those questions yet.

I have a proplem with my recently bought Sonos/Alexa. When I tell Alexa to connect to Spotify it responds saying 'sorry that device is offline'. Similarly, when I ask it to connect to a radio stn, Alexa acknowledges request but nothing happens. Can anyone help me to solve this problem please?

Hello. The Amazon Alexa App will not allow me to rename Sonos speakers fully. I have a large amount of automated devices and do not want to rename my groups for example “my living room” “my master bedroom”. I want to keep my Alexa groups as living room and master bedroom. So I have tried changing my speaker names in the SONOS app with little success. For example “Upstairs Sonos” and “Office Sonos” and “Downstairs Sonos”. Connect Amps and P1s work... However when I try “Living Room Sonos” or “Shower Room Sonos” or “Master Bedroom Sonos” - the app does not allow me to rename them as I run out of characters. My question is - how can i rename them? Is there a easy solution or can I access settings through the speakers xml/web settings? Or have I got my setup wrong? Is there a way to add Sonos “Living Room” to my “Living Room” Smart Home Groups, without amending the group names. Thanks Chris

Hi I've been unable to get voice control activated on the Sonos One. It seems that the set up process is not completing correctly. This is what I'm doing: 1) Open Sonos app 2) 'More' page menu 3) Voice Services 4) Amazon Alexa...Requires Alexa app 5) Add Amazon Alexa...Add to Sonos 6) Steps to set up Alexa...Connect your Amazon account this takes me to ps://na.account.amazon.com 7) Click 'Allow' to sign in to Alexa enabled Sonos speaker Clicking 'Allow' just brings me back to step 2). Voice control has not been activated and the microphone light remains off. I have an Amazon account, an Echo dot in another room with Alexa all set up and working fine. Hi all Just bought new Sonos One with Alexa from amazon. Set up Sonos and music easily. Trying to set up the Alexa and it says on Sonos not available in this country. I am in UK and have checked setting and it shows UK. Any help on this would be great. Bought specifically for Alexa and disappointed I can’t set this up. Thanks

Hi, I've seen various threads on this but not yet found a solution. I have added Spotify to my Alexa skills, I have set it as the default music service and I have made sure all my email addresses are matching on each account but still when I ask my Play One w Alexa to play something it simply says 'sorry, something went wrong?' If I ask it to play something on TuneIn radio that works fine and I do have Spotify Premium. Is there anything else I should be trying? Many thanks, Alex

I have a Sonos Beam successfully connected with Alexa using the Sonos skill on the Amazon Alexa app and an Echo Dot. It seems all voice commands are running through the Dot and then playing (for example Audible book or Spotify music) on the Beam when directed to do so using the "in X room" command. Works fine that way. It seems, though, that this is not working via the Beam itself (i.e., the "Alexa baked right into Beam" style). To note: - Alexa doesn't respond to questions via the Beam speaker but only on the small Dot. - The Sonos Beam mic light is not on (I have tried tapping and swiping on the mic icon on the Beam). - I can't find a setting in the Sonos app that turns on the mic. - Ideally, I would like to remove the Dot altogether from next to the Beam and just rely on the Beam to handle with built-in Alexa but this doesn't seem possible at the moment (unplug the Dot and all functionality stops completely). I currently have a 5.1 system with sub/beam/ones but I noticed that when used as surrounds with a beam, the ones have their microphones turned off when Alexa is enabled. Would I lose any functionality by replacing the ones with play:1s? Are there any future plans for using the ones' microphones in 5.1 with the beam?

How do i reset a sonos one?

So....I got the One, and I was never able to make it work like it was supposed to. Music from the App was never a problem, but the voice control always was. "Alexa, stop", and it wouldn't stop. "Alexa play XYZ", "playing XYZ (acknowledging command), and nothing happened. I tried the Ethernet (wired) option, and I got the same problems (so it wasn't the wifi). I exchanged the unit, and the replacement behaved the same way. Then I decided to test the same unit with my LTE data, from my cellphone. And it worked flawlessly! Voice control and Alexa finally worked with zero issues! I did another test: I took the Sonos One to a friend's house, and again, it worked very well, no errors at all. So yeah, obviously my network is not good enough for the Alexa control on the Sonos One. However....this is the only function that doesn't work properly. My iPhone, ipad, laptop, even the Sonos App, everything works well with the exception of the Alexa control on the Sonos One. I've read the comments her

I’m curious to know if Alexa (via the Sonos One) can control external devices such as my TV if I’m using the dedicated Sonos network (5.1 surround) connecting via Ethernet. My concern is that if my Sonos system is using a separate/dedicated WiFi that it won’t communicate with devices connected to my home WiFi. Am I wrong? Thanks!

Our local radio station switching from TuneIn to Entercom (Radio.com). Asking Alexa on an Echo to play our local station works fine. When asking Alexa via Sonos One, greeted with "Sorry, having trouble accessing Radio.com skill". I've disabled the skill, and tried to enable it directly from the Sonos One without success. Is this another limitation for the Sonos One? If it is, it's a deal breaker as I was going to replace our bathroom Echo with the One.

When I ask Alexa to play music she says shuffling songs but nothing plays

Having been a long time Bose user I switched to Sonos a couple of years ago and have absolutely loved everything from the simplicity to the quality of music. I was going to replace my Play Bar with a Beam to get the latest additions of Alexa, Air Play 2 etc however decided against so as to not sacrifice sound quality, I opted instead for a pair of Ones to replace my Play 1's, really my fault for not researching properly however I am really disappointed by lack of available features through Alexa, unavailability of Air Play when linked to Playbar and different speaker mounting points compared to Play 1's. As I say, mostly my fault for not researching fully however I've just spent $700 on an upgrade that has provided very little improvement, I really believe Sonos must provide better info when releasing new products.

Not making any significant progress with Sonos Support after submitting problem details 2 weeks ago and a Diagnostics submission just after that so posting this to see if anyone else has similar issues. The Sonos beam responds to Alexa commands but there is a problem with how it is integrated in the Alexa app which is unable to set Device Location or Device Time Zone. I can't set this data manually either, I get an error message that "We weren't able to update the address associated with this device. Please check your network connectivity and try again later" or "We weren't able to update your device time zone. Please check your network connectivity and try again later". I've removed the Beam from Alexa and worked through the set up again with no improvement. BTW, I have yet to see a formal process from Sonos as to how to factory reset the Beam, that may be an option but I don't feel inclined to waste more time doing that and/or resetting Controllers on mobiles, tablets and PCs with

If you are having this message "this is not supported on this device " then you must go to the alexa app and in the settings tab go to smart devices and search and add your back into the list. It will then work.

Is there any way to use voice commands (such as play music, volume up/down, stop, night-mode) on the Sonos beam without using/enabling Alexa? I love the soundbar, but after an unfortunate few events using Alexa and an echo dot (some funny, some not so funny), I'd rather not enable the full features of Alexa to get the voice activation

Alexa either won't recognize playlists- mistakes "work out," for "work," (I don't have a work out playlist). Or if asked to play an artist, states "shuffling music by [artist]" but then nothing actually plays. I've tried disabling and enabling the Sonos skill within Alexa several times. How do I enable so that music actually plays through Spotify?

Are there are any general rules for naming Sonos speakers and rooms in an environment with Amazon Echo devices and Airplay 2 to avoid issues and conflicts? I have a Sonos Beam in one room and two Sonos Ones bonded as a stereo pair in another room; in addition, I have an Amazon Echo and an Amazon Echo Dot in two other rooms. I use the Sonos app as well as Airplay 2 to play content. 1. In the Sonos app, I have named the room the Sonos Beam is in "Office" and the room the Sonos Ones are in "Bedroom." 2. In Apple Homekit, I have named the Sonos Beam "Sonos Beam" and placed it in the "Office" room and the Sonos Ones "Right Sonos One" and "Left Sonos One" and placed them in the "Bedroom" room. 3. In Amazon Alexa, in the Alexa Devices setting, I have named the Sonos Beam "Office Sonos" and the Sonos Ones "Right Bedroom Sonos" and "Left Bedroom Sonos." I’m planning out where to add various sonos speakers and dots in additional rooms in my house. In rooms with smart lights I’d like to be able to control them with the new alexa enabled smart groups. So can I add the Sonos One as the alexa enabled device in an alexa smart home group?
