Google Home Max vs Sonos 5
Google has announced their Home Max speaker. That thing looks like a direct copy of the PLAY:5. No one knows how it compares sound-wise. We'll see when it launches next year. My worry is: Google will take a huge chunk of music-centric customers to the Google eco-system and monopolizing yet another home product area. For those looking to switch, please share your opinion. It's a BATTLE for sure!
List of Onkyo receivers that work with Sonos
Onkyo said theywould release their list of onkyo and pioneer receivers that work with sonos and they did. https://ce-pro.eu/news/home-cinema/audio-av/pioneer-onkyo-products-now-work-with-sonos-speakers/ I haven't looked at these to see the price range or features. For those that must have atmos and Sonos whole home audio, this might be your solution.
Homepod - let's get this started...
Searched and nothing on Apple Homepod yet so I'll start this inevitable discussion. I see the Homepod announcement as an opportunity for Sonos rather than an end. Now that they know what the Apple play in this area is, Sonos has little choice but to move more aggressively in a direction that may be better for most of it's present and future customers. That direction, in my opinion, is one of greater openness, increased integration with Google Home, Amazon Echo and other "smart home" technologies and an overall increased pace of innovation. As someone who is quite heavily invested in Sonos, I look forward to watching this play out.
As a Jazz fan, I frequently listen to records, because of the sometimes excellent liner notes, which were intelligently written by some great critics. TunesMap is trying to bring back that experience, and more, to Sonos. Requires an Apple TV, but that's a minor hurdle if it delivers as promised. This could well be Sonos' answer to Roon. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/29/business/media/tunesmap-liner-notes.html
'You're better than this' Event June 6
so today is the latest Sonos event. Sadly it wont be live streamed. The 'teaser' image attached Any further speculation what it will be

New voice enabled Home Theatre device
More on Airplay2
More on 'Works on Sonos'
New Desktop app ?
Something else completely ?
Apple AirPlay 2: Does it change things for multi-room audio?
From what I've read on airplay 2, it is believe that apple will have the ability to send audio from your iPhone/ipad to multiple speakers and have them play in sync. Now, this could be just a feature of the homepod, as clearly Apple wants multiple Homepods to play in sync. However, does this also mean that other airplay 2 compatable speakers will be able to play in sync? For example, your Homepod, Bose speaker, and Sonos can all play in sync. I've read some things suggesting that's the case. This does somewhat make sense. Airplay 2 apparently requires compatible speakers to have a lot of memory available for buffering. If you want lots of unlike speakers to play in sync, having a big buffer would likely make that more easily accomplished, as I understand it. I don't have the right equipment to test this out personally, not even sure if there are enough airplay 2 compatible speakers that have been released to test it out. Going on the assumption that this is true, how does
Sonos Company Ethicacy, Morality and Integrity Core Values?
In the aftermath of the CR100 debacle it may be helpful to discuss the direction and methods taken by Sonos management to achieve their end goal of retiring the CR100 by force and the impact on and perception of customers future buying decisions They still have not made it clear in any believable way why they forced this issue which leaves many people puzzled and angry at the rendering useless of their legally owned equipment. Personally , this is a first for me . I have never owned a product previously that I have bought that has been rendered useless by the creators period,. Far less easy to swallow is the subterfuge of the battery non issue to cover an ulterior motive. This makes the company Sonos look untrustworthy at best . If you have a reason for doing this , spit it out and let people know. I believe that I, as the purchaser gets to decide when it is time to retire my own possession. I have a belief that quality equipment that was sold as a quality product to prospectiv
The End of Personal Music Uploads
Looks like Amazon is planning to end your ability to upload or play personal music files, and many predict that all of the other music streaming services will eventually do the same. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017/12/amazon-music-ends-mp3-upload-support-will-end-music-storage-service-in-2019/ This is a blow to folks who have collected tracks not offered by any music service and are unhappy with the reduced development of local library features and management. The answer for those needing to play files from their local library has always been "Just upload them to a streaming service", but now that option is disappearing with no good alternative being offered. Let's hope Sonos redirects some resources back to the local library side of the house before the ability to play those treasured files that don't exist in Music Service libraries disappears for good.
Hello Everyone Besides the fact that SONOS as a word is a Palindrome meaning it reads/pronounced the same spelled backwards and forwards (pretty neat marketing) I’ve always wondered from whence the name was derived by founders John MacFarlane, Craig Shelburne, Tom Cullen and Trung Mai. 1. Personally, I prefer the Latin derivative ‘Sonus’, which is the root of sonic and sound. 2. Although it could also be an acronym for "silicon–oxide–nitride–oxide–silicon" which is used in memory technology. I’ve not been able to find anything on the SONOS website that speaks to the history (origin) of the name and would be interested to read your take or tell me where it’s discussed. Out of curiosity which would you prefer to believe as the origin of the SONOS brand/name, 1 or 2 :?. Please cast your vote Cheers!
UK Price Rises
I was very disappointed to be informed of the Sonos price rises in the UK. Although the dollar rate is blamed it doesn't account for why the products are much cheaper in some countries? £100 rise on the Sub and Playbar is just too much. I am very lucky that my system is now pretty complete but think UK sales will suffer
I think we need to talk, it may not be working out, your not the easy going down to earth Speaker you told me. You are very high maintenance and difficult, why after all these years?
I have 13 speakers (14 if you count the five that if you plug in will kill the whole system) inclusive of the playbar, sub & sub - along with speakers in every bathroom and bedroom in this HUGE 1,200 Sq. Foot (being sarcastic). I have had them for at least five years, some newer than others. For the love of God, if I have to unplug the speakers one more time and replug them in again they are going out the window, and I will just chalk up my financial loss as a lesson the rest of the world can learn. First, Sonos support states it's my internet. I threw out Xfinity and got Fios (my Mbps is hovering at about 890 - 980 fast right...). Of course, after I ran around the house for hours with support on the phone up ladders down ladders, under here and over unplugging and then plugging back in. Resetting the modem, disconnecting the switch, unplug anything connected to the wifi, (this is a "dedicated Sonos Net" Mesh under boost -- well I think we are working with words that Sonos defin
Sonos’s Really Interesting Patent App: Play Music Based on Biometrics Like Sweat
The application (submitted in September 2016) describes how a user would consent to having data collected on biomedical measures such as pulse, perspiration, movement and temperature. The biometric information would be cross-referenced to the person's listening history and preferences. Through machine learning, a system could ascertain the most desirable biometric conditions for a person, and then play the appropriate audio to guide the individual to the desired state. https://www.cepro.com/article/sonos_patent_application_play_music_biometrics
PianoDIsc with Sonos
I am trying to connect my PianoDisc player to my Sonos system. I believe I have all of the correct cables connected in the correct manner, but when I try to play through Sonos, my Sonos speakers play the accompaniment music softly along with a loud whining sound (which the PianoDisc tech support individual says is the midi info trying to get to the piano), but the piano part does not play at all. Do you have any recommendations? I am using RCA cables from Audio Out on the PianoDisc player to the Audio In on the Sonos Connect, and then RCA cables from Audio Out on the Sonos Connect to the PianoDisc speakers located underneath the piano. Could the problem be that the Sonos connect needs to be a Sonos Connect:AMP?
Easy Equalizer for Sonos (app)
Hi all, I bought my Play:5 months ago and have been frustrated about how many menus we have to navigate to open the equalizer for a room. I am the kind of user the changes the equalization very often (for each album I could say), so I ended up making a personal app to do the job. Now I am releasing it as beta in Play Store. It is stupidly simple, and that is the idea. I released it as a beta for now, so you can't find it on Play Store using the search, only with the direct link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eduardosemprebon.easyeq If you find it useful I would love to hear your opinion and get feedback in case of bugs. I have no other Sonos device, so I tested the device switching with a Samsung TV =). Curious to know if it works for someone with multiple Sonos devices here. Thanks Eduardo
Are there any plans to introduce a line in facility so i can play my many records. I understand that there are "line in" options on play 3 and 5 but spending the best part of another £400 having already spent a few quid seems excessive. I see BOSE already offer this for a reasonable price...around 50 quid.
Sonos pulling Facebook ads
I just read today in an Engadget article that Sonos was going to temporarily pull it's Facebook ads in response to the Cambridge Analytica scandal and is donating that money to digital rights issues. Good for you guys! I like the product, now I have a reason to like the company too.
What does DTS omission say about Sonos as a company?
I've read the lame excuses about the "modern listener" and their habits. But although I could probably get past losing support for my existing DTS content, I'm wondering if I can get past taking a slap in the face from a company marketing a premium product at a premium price. At the end of the day, this comes down to either pig-headed stubbornness about admitting a mistake or disgraceful greed at the expense of the customer. There is no other way to explain it. After all, we're not asking for HDMI inputs here. Adding DTS support would not affect the simplicity of setup in any way. Ego, laziness or greed are the only possibly explanations. It is clearly neither difficult nor expensive to implement as shown by every single other product on the market. So it looks like my Sonos experience will end before it even began. I was looking forward to building out a whole home system. But even though this one technical omission would not typically be a deal breaker, the giant middle finger
When will there be support for Apple HomeKit ?
I've just watched the Apple WWDC and I'm wondering why I should stay with Sonos, now that apple have brought announced its own spa Ian awaness speaker. I think in light of this announcement it would be wise for sonos to implement HomeKit, if it does not want to loose customers like me.
Alexa in Canada
I have been stomped for days pondering about why Amazon has not release Alexa yet in Canada. I really hope it is not because of new privacy legislations that has been brought up. I probably am on the wrong forum about this and find an Amazon dedicated forum. But does anyone know why or if Alexa is launching soon in Canada?
Sonos V HomePod
As good a start as any - assuming that it is indeed from the Sonos ex CEO, a cut/paste of his tweet, to kick off proceedings: "Got my HomePod. First impressions... Good packaging, easy setup. Great sound. No clipping at volume. A little heavy on the bass (Jimmy Iovine effect). Handily beats a single Sonos One, at full, acoustically. Two Sonos Ones, in pair, do a superior job. Great start by Apple."
