I need to convert from optical to HDMI for an older TV (only 4 years!)

I've been looking at the optical audio input on the Playbase and am wondering if I could take computer audio out of the built-in SPDIF port on my motherboard, and plug it into the Playbase? That way, this thing would act as a super-deluxe computer speaker, I could stream various stuff directly from my computer throughout the house on my other Sonos speakers (i.e. Podcasts), and my desk would get a lot more tidy. Also, can anybody tell me what kind of delay Sonos introduces when processing digital signals? For example, would voices match lip movements? Would it make light gaming unacceptable? If all of the above are positive, I'm thinking this Playbase, with a Sonos Sub, might make an excellent home office sound solution.

So, I have now spent a great deal of time (and money) on setting up what I initially thought would be the ideal home theater entertainment system. I have several items of which I will list below but, now that I have given it further consideration, I'm unsure of how these devices will all connect to give me the experience I imagined, or if connecting them is even possible. Looking at options to get rid of all my 5.1 speaker wires. I have an Onkyo TX-NR709 AVR running to 5.1 surround speakers an LG 55EC930V Oled TV, with inputs from a Bluray Player and a Freesat box (plus a now obsolete iPod dock). I also already have 2 Sonos play 5 speakers that I use in other rooms. I have a feeling I'll find out my AVR would be made redundant by a sonos 5.1 set up but I wonder if I should leave it filling the gap in the furniture that I had custom made for my set up, and feed the output from that to the playbar/playbase instead of having everything go through the TV? Is there any sound quality advantage? The other thing I was wondering is that this might allow me to still have my existing powered subwoofer instead of getting a Sonos sub (no need for long wires on that one). I was then also wondering if I could keep my centre speaker in the cabinet under the TV too for an even fuller front sound, but that may be a bit daft. The AVR seems to have a baffling array of capa

I could have sworn I used to see PlayBar in there, now it's just LivingRoom(+Sub+LS+RS). When I go to about my system I can see the PlayBar, but not in any Room settings screens or preferences. Is this normal ?

I own a Samusng UE32D5000 TV. I have the Playbar working as external speaker. I paired two Play:1 with the Playbar, and they play together when sending music. I stream most of the tv I see through the Netflix app on the phone (Samsung Note 3 Android) via Chromecast 2. I have set the sound SPDIF to use Dolby Digital (other option is PCM). However, from the Netflix App I am not able to choose Dolby Digital 5.1 as the sound output. How will I get a 5.1 using the Sonos Playbar for my usage?

I plan to import Playbar to Japan to connect my TV. A problem is that Japanese broadcast uses MPEG-2 Audio (AAC) for 5.1ch audio. I understand that Playbar supports only Dolby Digital (AC3) and PCM (2ch). Is there any hardware box to convert AAC to AC3. I do not want to use PCM stereo instead.

I'm changing my surround sound set up and have moved my playbar, which was just enjoying life as an audio speaker in the dining room, into the lounge, connected it to the SKY box. Next step was going to be recalibration but the option, which should be under 'Advanced Audio' in the Android app (and also the Windows option), isn't there. There's only one entry: TV Options and that's just something to do with delay / lip sync.

I have a PLAYBAR which is connected to my Samsung KS8005 TV via the optical cable. Sound is playing fine, when the PLAYBAR is set to TV-mode. If I want to stop the playback on my PLAYBAR (and only have sound from the TV), is there a way to disable/stop TV-mode, without having to play something else (like a radio station) and then pausing that right away? Bonus question. If I set the TV to use the internal speakers, then my PLAYBAR still plays sound if it is in TV-mode, even though nothing should (in my opinion) be sent to it via optical. Has anybody else experienced this? Maybe it's a Samsung software bug? Thanks.

Hi everyone, new to the forum and currently planning to buy a Playbase once they are available. My question is about HDMI / Toslink switching for Playbars (and soon to be Playbases). I know there is a lot of conversation about Monoprice vs. Octava in various threads, and my question is similar but, based on my particular objectives, incorporates both individual audio components and individual video/audio component. I have essentially eradicated all of my previous stereo unit by selling off my 5.1 speakers, sub, amplifier, CD player, and DVD player (which did not output HDMI). My objective is to first have a high quality soundbar for my television to enhance the sound from cable box and Roku and, second, to be able to integrate a couple of stereo components into the Playbar/Base, which I realize is limited to one optical input. Hi, I have had the playbar and recently added the sub, now due to various circumstances beyond my control haven't had the chance to fully have these up and running but I have had a chance to test them out, and I was really pleased. Naturally I was looking to add some play 1s to the mix and enjoy a proper 5.1. The penny dropped. Not in my case because I decided against purchasing them. See I was not aware that sonos does not offer true 5.1 at the time of purchasing. It was only when I decided to buy the 1s that I found out. Yes I can buy this TV, couple it with that bluray and use this switch and then I can make it work somehow. But isn't the whole point of having a sonos system, simplicity? Having to have to change my whole media centre to accommodate sonos sounds anything but!! Hello All, Just recently purchased a Panasonic 50DX802B 4K TV. My current audio set up is everything going into the TV via HDMI and than Audio out to the SONOS Playbar, Sub & two Play:1's, i.e 5.1. My issues start with HDMI 5.1 passthrough to optical out. Theres is an unusual, un-bearable delay where the audio is after the video. Unfortunately the SONOS lip-sync only works for video after audio. 5.1 audio from the built-in apps are fine with no lag and also with PCM/Stereo so its seems isolated to HDMI passthrough to optical. I know they're solutions with an HDMI switcher etc and I will be trying an audio extractor via ARC later in the month. (something like this http://www.octavainc.com/HDMI-Audio-Converter-EDID-Manager.html). The guys over at AVforums have also confirmed the same issue with their TV's. I've seen positive results here, where SONOS have worked with Samsung etc to fix issues, I wonder can SONOS do the same with Panasonic (I've tried!)? Has anyone u

I am a total audio idiot so I need some help. I initially set up my Sonos Playbase to the TV. All video games (PlayStation and Xbox One) are connected to the TV. The sound was OK but not this "virtual surround" stuff that was why I bought the Playbase in the first place. I checked the Sonos app and audio in showed STEREO. I then connected the Playbase to the Xbox One directly (Xbox One has pass thru HDMI to watch TV). I checked the app again and it said Dolby 5.1 (or something along those lines, I cant remember exactly). It sounded a bit richer and fuller, but not that awesome virtual surround (but I didn't set up Trueplay as I do not have an IPhone). I'm using a 2x Play:5 setup in my living room. This is using for listening to cd music via line-in one the left and tv-audio via line-in on the right Play:5. This setup allows me to listen to Spotify, cd music and tv via the same setup. I would like to extend the tv setup with a Playbase where the Play:5 would be used as surround speakers. I would not use the Playbase for listing to spotify or cd-music, this would have to stay on the Play:5's It is possible to create this setup?

Hi, I would like to know if positioning a sonos sub not facing the listener would result in a sub-optimal listening experience. In particular, it would be on the ground, just right of my playbar, facing on the right (on the left - which means on its back - there would be a piece of forniture with the playbar on top). The playbar and the sub would be about 4-5 meters from the listeners). An alternative would be to have the sub facing the listener by putting it beside the playbar, but this would mean that the sub would not be on the ground but on the same piece of forniture as the playbar. Simple question I'm sure, but don't know the answer so that's why I'm here. Getting an HDMI Switcher on Monday for all my HDMI Components, DVD, Blue-Ray, Roku.... Currently my Playbase is connected from the Playbase into my Digital out out port on my TV..... When I set this up do I then run the TOSLINK cable from the Playbase into the Optical port on the HDMI splitter ??? Or is it left as is from Playbase to TV ?? As always any answers or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank You !

I've had my Playbar for a couple months now and can't seem to get the lip sync issues worked out. My setup consists of Xbox One S, PlayStation 4 Pro and Apple TV 4th gen to hdmi switch. From the switch it is HDMI out of HDMI Switch to HDMI input on TV. I've tried different sources and all have issues with lip sync. I thought it may be the switch so I took it out of the mix and still same issue. Tried lip sync on Sonos App still same issue. Tried lip sync on my tv still same issue. Has anyone else has this issue. If so, what was your fix? Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone, I am looking at buying a projector screen just for my 3.1 by 3.6m bedroom. What brand/product would recommend? I am looking at connecting it to my brand new Sonos play5 (gen2) system. What are all the ways I can connect it up? from the cheapest budget option .... to the high end option where my sound quality isn't lost. But probably looking at. Cheapest option with biggest image possible. Also worth noting looking into a getting to play1 speakers to create a soround sound system in my room. Thank you for your time.

Hi, I'm from Italy. I recently purchased a Play:1 and it works perfectly with all my Apple devices (iPad, iPhone and, most important an iMac 27" late 2012). I'm starting to think to buy a Playbar to realize the Home Theatre system I always dream... no cables and perfect sound for DVD and movies from iTunes. I have not a TV and I use the iMac late 2012 as screen for everything so the question is: is it possible to link the iMac (late 2012 manufactured) with its headphone/optical digital audio output (minijack) with the Playbar? I have a fire stick in a home theater at my house. I would like to plug my fire stick directly into the HDMI of my projector, but I don't want to run audio cables. Is it possible to get the fire stick to communicate with my Sonos system over WiFi? Also, would there be an audio delay if I were to do this?

I have a playbar that I have to place behind my TV due to its location above a mantel. There is a 2 inch gap below the TV so some sound comes through, but I am not ecstatic about the sound quality. I was planning on adding 2 play 3s essentially as front bookshelf speakers -- one on either side of the TV. The point was to augment the sound coming from the playbar in front, not to create surround. As best I can tell, I can bond the 2 play 3s to the playbar but then they will act as surround. Is that right? If so, can I play with the surround volume to try to achieve what I want -- more front sound? I think I can also group them with the playbar as a stereo pair, but then it sounds like there will be a delay in the sound. Is that right? Is the only way to eliminate the delay bond rather than group? I guess I could get rid of the playbar and just run the two play 3s as front speakers off a connect or connect:amp, is that right? Any other thoughts? Thanks so so much :

I have the above TV connected via optical out to a playbase and sub. The sound when used for music via the Sonos app is fab, as is the TV sound through the Playbase BUT I have a freesat box and an Apple TV box connected to the TV via HDMI sockets into the "One Connect" hub that these TV's come with and the sound through these is rubbish. Does anyone have any advice on how to resolve this?

I have a Samsung un65ks800d TV that uses a Samsung Smart Control TM1680A. The Sonos Playbar does not recognize the signals from the remote. Has anybody had success with this remote?

Dear Sonos- This weekend I streamed Rogue One. It was Dolby Digital Plus 7.1. Time to upgrade your equipment to make it compatible with Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 (DTS support would be great too). I'm willing to wait a year before I sell my Sonos and get either the Axiim Q or Klipsch wireless systems.

Hi all, I'm hoping someone can provide some clarity on settings and surround sound. I've just set up a Sonos home theatre system as follows: Playbar connected to TV, a Samsung UA55ES7100M, with optical cable and TV settings to external speakers; Sub and 2 x Play 3's as surrounds. I have an Apple TV (4th gen) connected to the TV via HDMI but only seem to be able to get stereo. When I set the Apple TV to Dolby Digital 5.1, under Audio and Video/Surround Sound, I get no sound when playing from iTunes movies or Netflix. Both play fine if Apple TV is set to Best Available Quality, but only in stereo. With the above settings active, in the TV output settings I can select PCM when playing Netflix, and both PCM and Dolby Digital with iTunes movies, however no sound from the Sonos speakers regardless of the setting. With any other apps on the Apple TV I do get sound, but only the PCM option on the TV. Is anyone able to confirm if this is an issue at the Apple TV end, or the TV not
