Playbase specs say is can take TVs weighing up to 77 lbs; mine (78 in Samsung) weighs 87 lbs. Can the playbase take this weight?

It's entirely up to you as to whether you want to believe the specs, or not. I highly doubt that you'd ever get anyone from the Sonos company to encourage anything heavier, due to possible lawsuits and complaints. I suspect they didn't pull the specs from thin air, but did some testing.

Yeah, I can't imagine Sonos endorsing an exception to the weight limit. There's undoubtedly a bit of leeway depending on the base of the TV for how it will distribute that weight, but I don't expect you'll have the facts on what is OK.

I'd recommend using like this stand to be on the safe side: http://www.sonos.com/en-us/shop/sanus-tv-stand-for-playbase.html

The stand you recommend has a weight capacity of less than the Playbase (60lbs). Seems to me that isn't a solution at all. Basically, the Playbase seems to be not meant for any TV (most) over 65 inches.
