Hello everyone,

We wanted to take a moment to address concerns regarding our new app that launched in May. At Sonos, delivering an exceptional experience is paramount to all that we do. Unfortunately, your experiences over the past several weeks have fallen short of our commitment to you.

Today, our CEO Patrick Spence published a letter that includes a detailed update on the progress we’ve been making and plans going forward. You can read the full letter here.

We sincerely appreciate your patience and continued support. We are working hard to earn back your trust and are more committed than ever to delivering a consistently great Sonos experience for everyone.

Thank you all for your patience,
Your Sonos Team

The old app was wonderful. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.

Old app: easy to use, intuitive. No instructions required.

New App: Clumsy, needs 30-page instruction manual, inferior responsiveness.

jgatie sez: I think you are being deliberately obtuse.

If I’m obtuse, it’s inadvertent rather than deliberate. And I’ve been called a whole lot worse than ‘obtuse’ before so I won’t take it personal. I still do marvel that instead of veiled, ‘obtuse’ corporate techie-speak they don’t just say ‘your Sonos playlists will be restored and you’ll be able to create, save, edit and resave them.’

Sometimes ya hafta color by numbers for the slower kids in the class.

Classy move to acknowledge the issues, but this app should have never been released. You would be better off releasing the old app until this was finished.

I applaud the note and taking responsibility. Good to see that note being issued (a bit later than people might have expected but good nonetheless).

But despite the contrition, and if this forum over the last couple of months is any indicator, I fear this thread will still shortly become a breeding ground and echo chamber for abuse and toxicity….

This is an utter disaster, one that was preventable if the company had put their customer’s needs first, and fixable if they’d simply released the old app alongside the new one. All of this indicates that they are making spectacularly bad decisions at the top, and an indifference to the nightmare they’ve inflicted on their users. Imagine if a live service, like Uber, released an app that made it problematic to use. Do you think they’d take almost a year to fix it?

At this point, the apology should be the old app released in parallel and a new CEO explaining why they made the mistakes they did, and why it won’t happen again.

Too little, too late

I think you’re missing the point presented by @jgatie . No matter the time...people are going to complain that whatever was in place before the change was better. It’s not about numbers but more so the resistance to change when things aren’t as smooth (or so imagined) as they were before.

For you or anyone else with an open mind please consider reading the book in the link on change. You have to be willing to view/read the book metaphorically.

Who would not consider the removal of much-used features and delayed promises to bring them back to be worse? This time it's not about personal preference, it's about breaking what was not previously broken. What has transpired is not “resistance to change”, it is a logical reaction to the sudden deterioration of a product. Do you think the fact that that the head of the company has personally apologized is because of resistance to change? Hardly. It's because of resistance to stupidity.

Aug  - Sep before addressing basic volume control… lost for word! Just roll it back; the pre May version was fine thanks!

Finish building the new app, test it properly, roll out a beta, get feedback and then launch. You’re not a small company anymore; agile’s great but this is not how you do it .

Who is applying the pressure to release when you’re not ready? Sounds like an internal cultural issue that needs to be addressed.Patrick?

Why do you care? The CEO gave no thought to you. All they had to do was push the headphone back a quarter.

I don’t care. The app and all my speakers work perfectly well. I just know how disgruntled people think and act, and I’ve been proven right.

Thank you all for your patience,
Your Sonos Team

I think you've dropped the ball now and will struggle to win back large amounts of customers. Just look at the reviews on the App stores. 1 star. You've really damaged your brand.

You spent well over a year telling everyone to reboot and its their network when their system disconnects etc etc when all along it was your Apps. You've not even acknowledged that.

I had 4 of your products but I sold them and I would never buy another one.

You spent all your time on developing products that look great like the new headphone, but totally abandoned existing user base removing features after they've spent large amounts on hardware. You can't play local music from your device anymore.

Reading these community threads I'm sure many users feel the same. Its game over for Sonos... joke company

Dude, this forum needed to be a breeding ground of abuse and toxicity over the past couple of months, otherwise Sonos would've shrugged their shoulders and formed the opinion that customers liked the new app!

Why can’t they go back to the old app even if they would have to maintain both until they have solutions?

No no, the multi-million dollar company needs someone to defend them on a forum.

I’m still not seeing any acknowledgment of the fact that large numbers of Sonos users with YouTube Music accounts can’t play large portions of the music hosted on the YouTube Music service - but I finally had a tech support person tell me they’re aware of the issue on the phone yesterday (after finally getting through to them after weeks of giving up due to extensive hold times).

How many other significant bugs are Sonos trying to sweep under the rug?

How much longer can Patrick Spence realistically stay in his job after overseeing such a monumental screw up?

It's telling that you automatically equate expressing one's disappointment over a product with unleashing abuse and toxicity.

That came from the opening post?

I don’t think they see it as a problem, more an issue to be managed  (they are very sorry you are angry)

Yeah, blame the prediction for being correct.

If you think that is a proper representation of the abuse and toxicity in this forum for the past two months, I've got some examples of deleted posts you need to see.  Absolutely sick and disturbing posts, truly vile stuff.

I had to put my iPad on charge again, did I miss much toxicity?

I’m livid.  I had a perfectly functional system in May.  I could press play and music would play.  I could press a button and the next track played.  I could use the volume slider and the volume would… CHANGE.

What is absolutely mind blowing is the reality that leadership at Sonos released this hell spawn of an update in the first place.  Think about this.  Version 80 wasnt released to address a massive security update.  It was released so some shiny headphones could be shipped on time.  And in doing so, leadership crapped all over the very customers who made Sonos what it is today.  This was a conscious decision.

after the release, the CEO told us that he had been testing and using the new app for months in his own home.  I can’t believe this.  And I don’t mean I don’t believe this, I CAN’T believe this.  Because that would mean the entire Sonos leadership is so incompetent they shipped a fundamentally broken piece of software OR cared so little about customers they decided to push forward no matter what.  The only other option is the Sonos leadership is a bunch of chronic liars and they didn’t actually test the system for months.  I’d respect that more.

I feel crapped on.  I feel ignored.  I feel like I’m an endless moneybag to Sonos.  I don’t want money from Sonos.  I don’t want credits.  You know what I want?  I want a volume control that responds.  I want my kids to use our Sonos system again and to stop carrying around iPads and mobile devices to listen to music.  They abandoned Sonos because IT DOESNT WORK.

If you can’t fix the bugs in a couple days, do what every other major software developer does:  Punt.  Roll back to the software version that works.  Give me back a system that works as well as it did the day I bought it.  I’m out of patience.  I don’t care about being polite.  That goodwill is long gone.

Screwing over customers isn’t courage.  It’s ego and hubris.  From what I can tell, Sonos has too much of that and far too little humility.

and don’t post links to threads about people complaining about S2.  S2 was optional when first released.  I could opt in.  And pesky things like volume control worked.  This is different, so stop trying to make this same old disingenuous argument.
