Use Alexa for rain sounds for our baby. Went to max volume in the middle of the night. Unknown how long it was on. Hope her ears are ok.

Same Problem here. It was described and discussed in detail for more than one year and it persists. I think enough people made it clear that it is not just annoying but a horrible experience. Effectively, it feels like an attack on one’s mental and physical integrity. I guess no one cares if it’s “Spotify centric”. My spotify app has never turned up the volume by itself when used standalone. Sonos claims to integrate well with apps like Spotify (and they have to, without Spotify and co. Sonos would be useless for most of the users). As a consequence, they have to work with Spotify on solving these issues. However, given the fact that this issue is more than one year old, they either don’t care or they are not able to solve the problem. Strong argument to change. Enough competitors available.

Aye, might start doing it every time it happens as well… it’s happening less, though. Because I listen to music less, especially in the evenings. Not sure whether that counts as a solution.

Exactly the same - if I open Spotify and connect to Sonos speaker from in Spotify volume goes to max in whole house - is there a fix for this?

At the moment it means I can’t connect to Sonos speakers through Spotify which is really annoying.

This just happened to me and it was horrible.

This was reported months ago. Why hasn’t it been resolved? This is SONOS’s Tesla-randomly-veering-off-the-freeway moment. It completely saps confidence In the product and makes SONOS look like every other Internet of Sh^t product out there.

My ears are still hurting from the blast we got 2 hours ago. Running SONOS and Spotify via an iPhone.

Sounds to me like a Spotify mobile app connection to the Sonos MAPI interface was not ended correctly and the audio 'restored' to the mobile device and that volume was adjusted to Max with the phone hardware buttons … perhaps ensure the audio is redirected back to the mobile device at the end of playing from Spotify and that should stop this happening in the future.

This is a Spotify issue surely, rather than a Sonos issue? ... as the session connection to the API continues after their App has closed and even after the device has left the home LAN, which means this can occur whilst positioned at a remote location. I would just ensure you end the playback session appropriately, or perhaps speak with Spotify Support about the matter to get them to resolve this issue at their end.

Hi Cwoods

Below are two links specific to Spotify that may resolve your issue. You can also try the following:

From a Sonos perspective
1. You can set a volume limiter for each room. However I don't think that's necessary as you say the problem appears to be Spotify centric.
2. You can also delete both the Sonos and Spotify apps and reinstall them. Again I don't think that's necessary; but worth a try.
3. Submit a diagnostic, post the reference ID in your post and then call Sonos Tech support

From an iPhone perspective
1.You can also set a Volume limit under Music in Settings. However I don't think that's necessary as you say the problem appears to be Spotify centric.

I will submit a diagnostic when this issue happens again as its not consistent, just intermittent. But was pretty much wondering is there or will there be a permanent fix for this in the future without having to disable the lock screen and hardware controls in the settings? Or is this an issue with the hardware in my system?

Hi Cwoods

Submitting a diagnostic is a good idea and my recommendation.

You also mentioned that when you do the followingdisable the lock screen and hardware controls in the settings it seems to fix the issue. If that's the case I suggest you re-submit under another post outlining what your work-around has been. Then in that post ask if Sonos is aware of the issue and if so are they working on a fix. I'd post under "Ask a Question" as that will illicit the fastest response.

Also, I'd title the post with something like..."Spotify_Annoying Volume Increase_Is There a Fix?" then outline your issue and your work-around.

Let's us know how things sort out. Cheers!

It's happening to my system too... it's been doing it for about a month now.... really annoying!!!

I've had the same happen twice now. It only happened since I installed a Beam last week - volume is usually pretty low, but it seems that when I start the stream from Google Assistant, then load Spotify to change the volume (in this morning's case, to decrease it!) it latches all volumes to 100%. Sorry, neighbours!

I have submitted diagnostics, no 1256146649, in case anyone from Spotify support is looking into a fix for this...

The same happened to me several times and it became one of the biggest things I am scared of. It usually happens when I play spotify and increase the volume by using buttons on Iphone XS and the volume starts to move by itself to the maximum. Very scary and annoying. Please fix this....

Same issue here. Spotify on an iPhone X with 2x play 3s, sub and soundbar. Volumes will be uncontrollable and goes to max on its own. I will fight with the volume in the Sonos app but it will keep going up to max on its own even when I pull the slider down. Horrible bug and with this many people complaining, how has this not been fixed yet???

I didn't have this problem over the weekend but I didn't use my Sonos very much. I did set volume limits to 60% as a work around. This is very annoying and if it isn't fixed I will probably switch to Apple Misic.

I contacted Spotify and they just told me to delete my app and reinstall. Not very helpful, I had just done that after wiping my iPhone and iPad.

I am experiencing this same problem. What a shock at 9.30pm. My neighbors are angry. I am upset. Playing music in Spotify. Set from Spotify to play in Sonos.  Went to sonos and volume was on very low and the switches shot up to 100% without touching them. I tried to reduce it and it kept shooting up to 100% volume. I think this is utterly pathetic that this issue has been going on for a year according to this board. Each of my iPad, sonos and Spotify are fully up to date apps wise. Sonos sucks sometimes

This is still an issue since it happened to me this morning and it scared the **** out of me!

I was using the Sonos app and Spotify app on my iPhone. Volume goes up to 100%, uncontrollable. I had to pull out the plugs of the Sonos stereos.

I’ve experienced the same issue two years ago at a friends house who had Sonos. It suddenly started playing 100% volume music without any of us controlling anything. This is very worrisome.

How to prevent this from happening?

Uninstalling Spotify from your phone is the usual fix.

As a guess, you gave someone access to your system earlier, and the continued to use the ‘Spotify Connect’ system that was connected to your speakers, and initiated a playback. Since the playback was on your system, and not local to them, they couldn’t hear it, and turned it up on their phone, trying to figure out why they couldn’t hear it.

This is an unfortunate side affect of the way the whole Spotify Connect system was set up by Spotify. Unless you ‘break’ other user’s connections to your Sonos by playing a non-Spotify source on your speakers, their Spotify will remain connected to your system, even though they’re not still on your Wi-Fi.

Same thing happening to me.  I think it’s triggered when my phone restarts the Spotify app from the background.  It’s an older phone running Android 6 Marshmallow and for whatever reason, as of earlier this year it will close out Spotify when the phone display shuts off and then restart it when I wake it up.  That’s annoying itself, but the volume blasting problem only started happening in the last few weeks.  I have to bolt up from wherever I am and literally run to hit the pause button on one of the units.

I unplugged my two Play 5s and plugged them back in, made sure both Spotify and Sonos were updated on both my phone and laptop, but for now I’m avoiding the Spotify app when playing on the Sonos because it feels like one of my ears that’s pretty close to the speaker when I sit at my desk has diminished hearing like when you go to a concert without earplugs….  Max volume seems like just an annoyance but it’s actually a health risk, please try to address ASAP!

I have been experiencing this for the last couple of months on my Play5 Gen 2, and not on my Play3, Play1 or Connect….and I don’t use Spotify.

Er, no, Airgetium. That is not the case, as I live alone and it is a closed system. But thanks for your thoughts all the same.

This was a true repeated error with the sliders rocketing up, even when I repeatedly turned them down they went straight back up: I saw as much and the volume went to maximum a few times in succession. Nothing to do with a competing user.

This is some kind of conflict between spotify and Sonos 2. And again I am very upset by Sonos. I have had a number of problems over the years and wished I had bought a different system now.

Add us to the list! Our volume randomly jumps to max whilst listening to local radio through Tune in radio. Today it has just turned itself on at full blast! The radio wasn’t even on!

Any help gratefully accepted!

Really annoying. Please fix this.

This has been happening to me for years when listening to Spotify through Sonos.  Different speakers different iPhones… And Bruce I like your optimistic view of the world but it's not a remote under the couch cushion.  At this point I have just gotten good at pausing the music very quickly so I can close and reopen the apps. USUALLY that fixes.  In my experience Sonos support is a bunch of know it all tools with suggestions like Bruces that everything is user error.  I don't think they are going to worry about fixing it.  It's been happening since at least 2018 for me.

I can reproduce this on my iPhone when I have the Spotify and Sonos app open at the same time. I usually drive music in the Spotify app and use the Sonos app to adjust volume, because there is finer control. I actually stopped listening to music for a while because of this.

This is still an issue since it happened to me this morning and it scared the **** out of me!

Is this a joke?

I’m having the same issue, can’t believe this is a bug with more than one year of age… and as it was mentioned before, this doesn’t happen with other integrations. So how is the deal? There are other competitors will better price range. I’m not saying provide a solution now, but acknowledge the problem and try to fix it. And no, uninstalling spotify from my phone is like shooting the dog when it didn’t understood a command.
