Today we are introducing the most extensive app redesign ever, creating an unprecedented streaming experience that allows listeners to organize their favorite playlists, stations, albums and more from over 100 services on one customizable Home screen.
The new Home screen provides faster access to Sonos system controls with one easy swipe up, making tab to tab jumping a thing of the past. As a leader in sound experience that’s focused on creating a better way to listen, Sonos intentionally redesigned the app on a modern software platform for an easier, faster and better experience that can support more rapid innovation.
The reimagined app supports all existing S2 products and will be available globally through a software update for the S2 mobile app.
100+ streaming services, one Home screen
The redesigned Sonos app prioritizes a listening experience that’s human - allowing you to bring your true favorites front and center and giving you more control to make your streaming experience your own.
Get into your music (and off the app) faster: No need to tap between tabs —the new Home screen serves up all your favorite content and controls, all in one place. Quickly jump back into your recently played, browse libraries and recommendations from your preferred services, and fill your home with music and all the sounds you love.
Customize and curate: Enjoy unparalleled curation by designing your Home screen to reflect how you listen. Pin rows of your favorite content and services; then move, edit, or rearrange them to your liking.
Search every streaming library: Look for an artist, song, podcast, or audiobook across all your preferred streaming apps at once via an easy-to-use search bar that’s always available right on your Home screen.
Elevated system control: Swipe up from the bottom of your Home screen to seamlessly control your entire system and access a visual overview of what’s playing on each of your products, quickly group speakers, and dial in on the perfect volume from anywhere in the app.
Accessible from any modern web browser, a brand new web app allows listeners the same seamless system control as the mobile app.
The Web App will be available alongside the redesigned mobile app on May 7, 2024.

The controller app now sits on web architecture and uses web services so you will need the internet on all the time and this is the reason for the disconnects, slowness and random bouncing functionality. And you're right, why do you need remote access for a WiFi/LAN system. This is what they've done, cut the app from local execution. You only have to ask why?
I think Sonos considers people wanting to play local media a thing of the past. Streaming is now the way people consume music. So if you have an internet outage streaming will not work anyway.
People with personal music libraries tend to listen to music rather than consume it.
On topic: For no apparent reason, my music library went missing from my system today. I have re-added without issue or error codes, but not something that has happened before.

Same here yesterday. First I could not add again my local library (through the desktop app) - the app got stuck at the level of ‘updating’ the library.s It did work after the 4 th attempt… no cue as to why it then worked ...

Yep that's me with my own music library full of music deleted from publishers and not available. I have had streaming services too and they have all been rubbish. When I bought Sonos it was for a home audio system connected across WiFi not 'yet another webapp' or the less diplomatic YAFW. But then they want controllable passive consumers as customers clearly.

Yeah it's so old fashioned. Whereas the concept of music subscription services is full of 'modern quality' hifi. Before these canned web steaming services there was mail order services like Britannia Music Club where you got 1 or 2 good records/cassettes/cds at a huge discount but were then stuck in a contract for a year receiving the monthly cd consisting of bad imitations of current pop hits or worse abominations of any classics in whatever genre. Spotify, et al are the same.
From my perspective, it’s all about where Sonos can make the most money. If you subscribe to Spotify, Pandora or any of the others through Sonos, they most definitely get a percentage. If you listen to your own music library, they’re no longer monetizing you. So those of us who want to combine our personal, curated music collections with Sonos’ speakers are, to put it bluntly, screwed.

From where are you getting this information? Note, you don’t subscribe to any of these services through Sonos. You subscribe directly with the music streamer, and then point your streaming service towards your Sonos account. Based on available information, neither Sonos nor the vast list of streamers exchange revenue with each other. it is in Sonos’ interest to support as many streamers as it can so no potential customer is excluded, and it is in the streamers’ interests to work with Sonos to ensure their service is available to Sonos’ customers to maximise incremental opportunities.
Any decision on the part of Sonos as to whether or not to support music libraries going forward will be based on significant research into the number of people whose music is locally-based vs those using streaming services. Whilst the Venn diagram of music library users and Sonos forum users significantly overlaps, that doesn’t necessarily hold for the entire universe of Sonos customers. Those who have painstakingly uploaded CDs to a library will tend to be more older and technologically savvy and/or music purists, and will have a heightened propensity to being the member of an audio tech forum.
As has been noted on here many times, the future of music playback (and the related business efficiencies of those like Sonos who develop the hardware and software) is third-party music service streaming, and not local library support. Its very survival will be predicated on being in step with consumer listening habits.
All that being said, I’ve not seen that Sonos is stopping support for music libraries?
Please add queue features back to app!

It may be in the update later today. It should be as they said “Early June”.

I’ve already started hitting refresh in the App Store in anticipation Let’s goooo

You are incorrect in your assumption that Sonos gets a percentage of streaming revenue (outside of their own service). You can see the process and the rules here (notice the only fees mentioned are Sonos Pro, which is their commercial service for businesses).

THE UPDATE IS THERE RIGHT NOW! Let’s take a look….
The update instigates a firmware update too.
Hmm, so the sleep timer is only available when streaming music, not playing it from a local library, unless I’m missing something.
I spent 2 hours on the phone with my father trying to get anything at all to play on his speaker. Who is this app for? My son had to help as the app is confusing and accessing services is not simple. In the end we got one album playing and were unable to help him with the sleep timer. Shame sonos, shame.

Sleep timer is back as of the latest (today’s) release.
It would help if you could explain whre the app is confusing for you and how and accessing services is not simple.
The new app continues to be filled with problems, roam speakers that have worked for more than a year now stop.
adding and removing speakers to a group is a problematic mess. Add the speaker hit apply and the speakers frequently disconnect when you exist grouping. Volume adjusts are extremely slow to respond or updates revert.
In many instances the app interface doesn’t match current state. What isn T going to take to getnsrability and reliability? This is mess beyond rediculous!
I remember signing up to be a Beta tester and then finding it disappointing that there was never anything to test, just surveys every now and again to prove you were really serious about being a beta tester. What happened to that? Just a thought but if the “new and improved” app was offered to willing Beta testers, maybe Sonos could have had a glimpse into the future. I guess the headphones absolutely had to come out when they did. Sonos had to lead the way before someone else decided to bring expensive wireless headphones to the market. They wouldn’t want to end up being 10 years late to the expensive wireless headphone party.
Alarms are still not working for me on the latest update. Changing the time of the alarm won’t save

I don't need those options, I just need entire surround system working properly, because the system rely on WIFI and the app software. Every time I open the app device not found. Lost loyalty to SONOS
Volume bar is the worst thing in the last release..I can't control volume ...lagging or simply not reacting ..app is really a mess
Time to go back to Squeezebox (which I never left)! I have both running in parallel and iPeng runs circles around new *and* old Sonos Apps for accessing your local media.
So I must accept a new EULA in order to use the mobile app where we must give up our rights to sue in a manner that can actually hurt Sonos. This company has gone over the cliff...Will start getting rid of this junk now.
