Sonos 10.2 brings the Google Assistant to Sonos. Your Sonos One and Sonos Beam, once updated, will have the Google Assistant built-in, bringing a new voice to your home. With this update, you can now link your Google Assistant enabled devices to control Sonos hands free with the Google Assistant.

The Google Assistant is available on Sonos starting with the US only, with expanded availability this year. As of July 2nd, 2019, Australia, Canada, Germany, France, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom now have support for Google Assistant on Sonos.



To get started, check out our setup pages for controlling Sonos with Google Home devices or adding the Google Assistant to a Beam or One. The directions are below as well.



Once you’ve got it set up, try out some basic commands with “Hey Google…” or “Ok Google…”



“Hey Google, play my morning news.”



“Hey Google, play some music in the Living Room.”



“Hey Google, turn it up.”



The Google Assistant can control basic playback, such as skipping or pausing music on Sonos, and can start music from Deezer, Google Play Music, Pandora, Spotify, and YouTube Music.



With the Google Assistant on Sonos you can play music, find answers courtesy of Google Search, plan your day, set timers, and easily control smart devices around your home. You’ll also be able to use features specific to Google Assistant, like continued conversation, meaning you can ask the Google Assistant a series of questions without having to say “Hey Google” every time.



We’ll continue to bring more actions and functionality to the experience over time through software updates.

Setting Up Google Assistant

Enhance your Sonos experience with the Google Assistant by adding it to the Sonos One and Beam or by linking your Google Home devices to Sonos.



Adding the Google Assistant to Sonos One and Beam

To add the Google Assistant to the Sonos One or Beam, go into your Sonos App (on iOS or Android) and tap on More > Room Settings > Voice Services and you can select the Google Assistant to be added. Please note that you can only have one voice service added to a Sonos player at one time, however multiple voice services can be used on the same household if you have more than one compatible device.



Set up Google Home to control Sonos

If you don’t have any voice-enabled Sonos speakers in your system, you can still set up Google Assistant to control Sonos through a Google Home or other Google Assistant-enabled device.



In the Sonos app for iOS or Android, tap the More tab at the bottom, then tap Voice Services. Choose Google Assistant from the list. This will take you to the Google Assistant app, where you’ll sign in to your Sonos account.



Once you’ve connected your Sonos account, check to make sure you’ve added your music service accounts in the Google Assistant app by tapping your profile icon at the top right, then choosing Services > Music. You can also set your default service from this menu.

When I say:





"Hey Google, pause"





then mere moments later say, to the same speaker:





"Hey Google, play"





Google says it doesn't know what I'm talking about. Specifically, it asks me to specify which speaker I want to listen to. Sonos clearly knows that it can resume playing in that room because I can go to the app and hit play, but Google seems unable to do the same. The context seems pretty obvious to me, can this be fixed?
Hi DoktrMike, what happens when you say "Hey Google, resume?"





After a certain point, the implied room controls won't work from an inactive stream. With no active stream, you need to identify which room you'd like to play music in.
Do we have grouping feature between Sonos speakers using assistant? Like play radio/music in the bathroom too. Will add a room to the speaker in the bedroom i'm requesting for instance. Of course music in sync between all rooms like Sonos do well


Do you plan to add sonos alarm to Google assistant?
@Erwan QUEINNEC, there isn't currently the ability to group Sonos speakers together using the Google Assistant, or using Google Home devices grouped in sync to play the same thing with Sonos devices.





If you create a temporary group using the Sonos software, you can tell any of those speakers to play music using the Google Assistant and it'll play in all of them. Or you can start playing music on Sonos using the Google Assistant and then group your Sonos players together.





As to the Sonos Alarm, you can set Google Assistant alarms on a Sons One or Sonos Beam, but the Google Assistant isn't able to set up a Sonos alarm.
Sonos didn't add google assistant... Unless you live in the USA. My google assistant works WITH EVERYTHING else I have... Except sonos. Rubbish service

I have been working with Google Home and assistant to setup/merge rooms with smart devices.


I can get Google Assistant to play to my speakers, but how do you integrate the audio with video playback?





For example, I have video playing through chromecast, and want the audio to play to another networked device.





I know Google lets you control default playback devices for video/audio, but haven't seen how this works with the Sonos lineup yet.
Hopefully sonos are working on enabling default sonos speakers from google devices, like the google home hub, alot of people are asking for it.
Does the Google assistant integration also to the Play 5 gen. 2? It has some mics built in, so it should work in my opinion.
As the people above, I am similarly disappointing from the Google Assistant integration into the Sonos ecosystem, especially after waiting for so long. I think it is crucial requirement that users will be able to:







  1. Group Sonos speaker with other speakers for multiroom playback (not necessarily with Sonos in all rooms)

  2. Set Sonos speaker as a default music speaker

  3. Cast from Google Assistant/Google Home to a Sonos speaker from within apps (i.e. for the Sonos speaker to show up as one of the casting destinations).

Essentially, all this functionality would be possible if Sonos implemented Chromcast into the system. For me, it is not so important to use the Sonos speaker itself as a Google Home device - I have google Home devices for that. I just want to use Sonos as a network speaker (I only have Sonos Play:5)





Can anyone comment if those functionalities will be coming to Sonos in the near future (I am hoping for an official Sonos response)? It will be nice to know because if it is not coming soon I think it will be time to sell my Sonos and invest in other solutions.





Totally agree with #1 and #2. On #3, for me the sonos speaker does show up in my list of devices among other Google cast devices. Spotify and Google Play Music are the apps I've tested.
Finally! Glad to get Google Assistant on the Beam. I anticipated this update much sooner and it's the reason I purchased it, along with 2 Ones.





SUGGESTION: Please add support for Google Music and YouTube Music for "Thumbs Up" / "Thumbs Down" feature!





It's a constant feature I use that allows my phone to automatically sync with (and all devices)

Does the Google assistant integration also to the Play 5 gen. 2? It has some mics built in, so it should work in my opinion.


@eric93110, the original run of the Play:5 gen2 did have microphones, but they are not the type of array needed for voice control, and to this day have never been turned on. There's no software running on the players that can enable those microphones, and for anyone wondering, we'll be sure to let everyone know if we ever do decide to use them. The microphone-enabled Sonos speakers that are capable of voice control for Alexa or Google Assistant are the Sonos One and Sonos Beam.





You can use a Google Assistant enabled device to control what's playing on your Play:5 gen2s.

You have to specify the room name. If the Sonos room is named "Kitchen", you say "Ok Google, play Radiohead in the Kitchen." See this link for details:

We NEED to be able to group speakers in Google Home. This feature is a must.

@Ryan S, Is GA really not available in Austria or have you just forgot to add my country to the availability list (as it was the case at the launch of Alexa back in 2017)? 😉
@Smilja, the Google Assistant isn't available in Austria today, however I believe it's on the list for one of the regions that'll be coming soon. I'll let you know if I hear more I can share.
