Question

bad sound from turntable since update of sonos

Hi,

I have a thorens turntable directly connected to sonos5. Sound was perfect for months. Then the update came from Sonos and all of a sudden the sound coming out of the speakers when playing on the turntable is terrible.
updated again and it worked again fine. But now again the same problem and the system is up-to-date. I really believe it has to do with ur update of Sonos, which is also a terrible thing at least app wise.
what else can I do? Cannot use the turntable at all and it is not the speakers as both have the same problem but also not the turntable.

Hi @Rudi10

Welcome to the Sonos Community! And, apologies for the delay.

This is very unusual - there is no real reason why the app update would have changed the sound of your speakers. In what way is the sound “terrible”? Is it distorted, does it crackle, is it quiet?

The first thing I recommend you do is just to turn the speakers off for a time - unplug them from power and wait 10 seconds or so before plugging them back in.

However, you mention that both speakers are affected. There are three possibilities:

  1. Both speakers have developed the same speaker fault at the same time. Very, very unlikely.
  2. The line-in circuitry on your Play:5 is faulty. I’ve literally never heard of this happening.
  3. The loss of quality is occurring before the audio signal reaches your Play:5. With a turntable, this is actually not only likely, but expected, at some point. It could also be an issue with the audio cable - please ensure the cable is securely fitted in the socket.

The best test I can think of is to find another device that you can plug into the Play:5’s input to test - if it sounds good, look to the turntable for the source of the quality issue. You might need to clean or replace the record needle, or adjust it in some way. Perhaps the Pre-Amp switch on the turntable (assuming it has one) got switched off?

I hope this helps.

I have the exact same problem.  The “update” caused this.  The ability to control the compression setting is necessary to avoid the problem of variable sound quality from the turntable.  The setting was deleted in the “update,” as was admitted to me by a Sonos rep on the phone.  It’s absolutely incredible to me how problems this “update” created.  I disconnected my turntable from Sonos and plugged it directly into my receiver.  Obviously, I can now only listen to my turntable through the speakers that are wired to my receiver, but at least I can use my turntable.  If and when Sonos adds the compression setting back to the app, I will install a Y connector so that I can either listen to my turntable direct through my receiver or through Sonos.

Wasn’t this sorted in the July update? See attached…

Thanks Ken — I was not aware that compression was addressed in this update.  Hopefully I will be able to use my turntable with Sonos again.

There is an option to increase the line-in ‘Audio Delay’ buffer in the App answell and that may often help with Turntable audio playback too. I think the max. is a 2 seconds buffer.
