I received an e-mail from Sonos today about Apple Music lossless support. It says:
“Simply stream from Apple Music to a supported Sonos product. Over 100 million songs are available in lossless audio, with resolutions ranging from 16-bit/44.1 kHz (CD quality) up to 24-bit/192 kHz (hi-res)”
Does this mean that Sonos has increased its support to 24/192, with Apple Music?
Previously, it was limited to 24/48…

Apologies! That is indeed a miscommunication.
Sonos supports sampling rates of up to 48KHz, maximum.
I think someone literally copied the copy from Apple’s own pages, forgetting things were a little different when playing on Sonos devices.
I have flagged this internally - that email should not have gone out with that incorrect info on it!

That’s pretty cool I look forward to listening up to 24/192. Good job new Sonos CEO. Hopefully more new features to come as well as the return of the many missing control features and stability cause the new app is a pos so far tbh.

An error. No biggie.
To my ears 24/48 is noticeably better than 16/44 (CD) quality.
24/48 vs 24/192 is not noticeable to me.
But as hi-res lossless is going more mainstream, Sonos may want consider ticking that box moving forward?

I agree - 24 bit over 16 bit is discernible, but higher sample rates are not. As you say, it is hard to tell the difference. The bandwidth required goes up proportionately with the sample rate, however, so if we supported higher rates, we’d just have more audio interruptions happening for no good reason.
Sample rates of over 48KHz are really only for in-studio use - once audio is being delivered rather than worked on, there is no advantage to using higher sample rates.
