Hi community.

I am running an S2 system with slightly older and newer Sonos products.

  • Sonos Arc
  • Sonos Move 2
  • Sonos Port
  • Sonos Play:1
  • Sonos Play:3

If I group all of the newer Sonos devices (Arc, Move and Port) they work flawlessly. However as soon as I bring in one of the older (compatible with S2) devices (Play:1 and/or Play:3) the system, stops. I get an indication it is working, but no sound. Sometimes it does work, but more often it doesn’t.

If I just group the Play:1 and Play:3 they also work perfectly, it is just as soon as I introduce either a different generation product into the mix it becomes unstable.

All updated to latest available versions, etc.

Anyone else experienced this, and have a fix. I operate the oder devices in my bedroom and bathroom and love the idea of coming downstairs and music to continue on the new devices located there.

I have older devices running on S1, but these are separate - although do exist on the same network - I only mention this to be entirely open with my set up - but I don’t think it’ll affect the system in anyway. S1 and S2 co-exist quite well I have found.

Many thanks.

Some users have had issues mixing older and newer speaker on the S2 app. It is believed that this is because of the older hardware.

Do yo have the latest updates for the app and speakers?

If so, can you to hardwire either the Play 3 or Play 1 speakers to your router/network to see if that helps?

As you start to build a Group, the first unit becomes the “Group Coordinator”. All network traffic for the Group passes through this unit. I would avoid building a group starting with the PLAY:3.

Oddly, I’ve never had an issue mixing ‘older’ Sonos devices and ‘newer’ Sonos devices, all running S2.

My Play 3s work fine, I haven’t used them as the start of a Group though.

Thanks for the replies. It is interesting to know there’s a lead device as a Group Coordinator. However what I find is, I play something on, for example a Sonos Arc - so modern hardware. As soon as I add in a Play:3 the whole system goes silent.

However, if I use the Sonos Port, grouped with a Sonos Move 2 - all newer units, it works with the Play:3

All speakers and the app are running the latest updates. The only thing I haven’t tried is to hardwire over Ethernet, which I will try.

i have also subsequently read of memory issues with older units, where the newer units do not suffer. Something about a Summer 2023 update? Perhaps that adds to these vagaries.

Did you just run the update or did you verify the speakers were updated?

You can check the actual software version they are running under Settings - About.

I think the memory issues are mostly older Connect boxes, ones moved to S2 where the additional memory needed by S2 exposed memory issues that existed under S1 but due to the smaller size of S1 were able to be worked around.
