Latency / Lag Sonos One SL with Spotify

Hello all,

I just received my Sonos One SL and I am experiencing some latency issues when using Spotify.

When I push “play” or when I go to a specific time in a song there are some latency (around 2s) before the song actually start again. I do not have the same problem when I pause the song, it stops right away with no latency at all.

The Sonos One SL firmware is up to date and I tried to connect it through wifi and trough ethernet cable and always the same issue. I also tried to control it through different devices (iphone, laptop...) and same results.

As this is my first sonos, I do not know if this is normal. Any ideas?

It’s not normal. I’ve just tried playing and scrubbing through a track in the Spotify App and theres (hardly any) very little latency - so it maybe a network issue ‘perhaps’? I would try a reboot of the router and/or consider using different WiFi channels.

It’s often suggested in the community here to use a fixed ‘non-overlapping’ channel for the 2.4Ghz band (1, 6 or 11) and try a channel-width of 20Mhz only and see if that improves things for you.

Hello thanks for the reply I will test what you propose. But just to let you know that I have tried to connect the Sonos directly to the router using ethernet cable and it doesn't improve the situation so I am not sure the issue is coming from the network. I also tried using the 2,4GHz and 5GHz of my router without any success…

Which controller are you using, SONOS or the SPOTIFY App? Your profile indicates you are in France. I’m in the US. I can experience a delay as I start playing a SPOTIFY track using the SONOS controller. For no explicit reason I almost never use the SPOTIFY App. Tracks stored on my NAS start almost instantly.

You could check the speed of your Internet connection.

Actually I tried both and the results are the same. I do not have any lag when I use my phone speakers. So I don't think that is coming from my internet speed...

As a test I played a few tracks on my Android and a few SPOTIFY tracks using the SONOS Windows Desktop Controller and separately on the SONOS Android controller. Track startup and change as well as Pause/Play are slower using the SONOS controllers. In my opinion this is expected because the networking associated with SONOS is much more complicated. With the SONOS controller one player takes charge of the SPOTIFY stream and sends it out to any Grouped players. The controller could be working through one player while another player is managing the stream. The players build a buffer in order to be able to ride through temporary local network issues. All of this requires some time to setup and get going. A phone player does not need any of this management and plays directly to its speaker.

Hello all,

This morning I made some tests and it seems like the problem is coming from spotify. I do not have any lag using other services like soundcloud through sonos app.

However for Spotify the lag is real. It does not change anything if I use spotify service through sonos app or through spotify app. Results are the same.

Clearly I do not think the issue is coming from my network as I have pretty good speed and the sonos speaker is wired to my router. Moreover I have other speaker (not sonos) where I do ont have this same issue…

Any idea to solve my problem?

Hello all, just want to update the topic.

I have tried the following things to understand where the lag is coming from:

  • internet speed : ok when looking at speed tests and I have another wifi speaker no issue with it.
  • I have tested another sonos one speaker and same issue… Same result
  • I have tested another wifi network (one generated by a smartphone)… Same result
  • Trying to control through Sonos app and Spotify app… Same result
  • Reboot the router and the speaker (more than 1 minute)… Same result
  • Wire the speaker to the router using ethernet cable… Same result
  • Try 2,4GHz and 5GHz wifi… Same result
  • Strange thing : no latency at all when using Soundcloud services in Sonos app

Cleary the problem seems to come from Spotify… Any idea on how I can solve it? The lag is really annoying, it is around 2-3s when going to next song or when going at any time in the music.

@Pedro_375,

I’ve just tested the playback issue with the Spotify App, playing to a Sonos One SL (stereo pair) (over SonosNet using a ‘Connect’ connection, rather than ‘Airplay’) and I’m not seeing any notable delay within the local network here and I’ve also tried other speakers (Sonos Move) on a local WiFi connection and the tracks skip and play without issue.. it seems almost instant during the testing here.

My thoughts are that its perhaps something ‘local’ causing a problem with communication across the LAN - have you tried a different ‘non’ overlapping WiFi channel (or SonosNet channel, if wired?)

Are there any switches involved or does it happen when the speaker is wired direct to the router?
