Era 100 as Surrounds with PCM/Stereo sources and inconsistent sound

Forum|alt.badge.img

Hi,

I recently purchased two era 100’s to add to my Arc Ultra and Sub 4 as surrounds.

One issue I’m experiencing is that with certain PCM/Stereo sources e.g. Skynews on YouTube it constantly tries to passthrough the audio to the surrounds but it is not consistent and I get on/off sounds which is actually very annoying. For the most part I do not have this issue and if I listen to France24 it does not try passthrough the audio to the surrounds.

Why is there this inconsistency when listening to Stereo/PCM sources and is there any way to correct it other than having to disable the surrounds when listening to such sources? I would prefer and expect stereo sources to not try use the surrounds at all.

Thanks.

The DSP automatically will try to simulate rear signals for tv mode stereo audio. Depending on the stereo signal that can deliver nothing up to an acceptable result.
If you don’t like that, deactivating the rearspeakers via app for stereo audio imo will be the only solution.

While the above has been marked “Answered” it should be said that this is not industry standard which would exclude sound from surrounds when stereo sources are played unless explicitly chosen to include these sources.

I don’t believe this is the right approach to this and it should be an opt-in rather than the default. I will chalk this down to another poor Sonos implementation. Unfortunately this means I’m forced to actually use the app now to disable the surrounds for such sources.
