Sonos Ray Soundbar connection to Personal Computer

I am trying to use a Sonos Ray soundbar as the sound device on my personal computer. I have used both an internet cable to the computer as well as an optical cable. The Ray is shown as the main sound device & I can see the sound is playing but I cannot hear it. They are all on the same router.

Whilst the Sonos Ray is recognised by my computer, my Sonos App on my mobile phone cannot find it.

Can anyone give advice/help please?

Regardless the network issue Ray should play audio from your pc, if both are connected via optical cable. 
Make sure that…

  1. in Rays audio settings „autoplay“ is activated
  2. your pcs audio output is set to spdif (optical) in audio settings
  3. the optical cable works properly 
  4. pcs audio output format is compatible with Sonos system (try Dolby Digital 5.1 or pcm 16bit/ 44,1 kHz)

Do you know what type of signal is being sent to the Ray over optical? 

What sort of mesh network do you have?

Have you tried rebooting the Ray by power cycling it?

Have you tried wiring the Ray directly to your router, temporarily?

Have you called Sonos Support directly to discuss it?

From what you have described the Ray and your device are not on the same subnet of your router. You need to remove the Ray from your computer and factory reset it. 

Next try adding the Ray as a new product in the app on your device. Don’t worry about connecting it to a source over optical just yet. If the Ray is successfully added as new product your computer should see it as a networked device.  Not necessarily as a speaker but just a device on your network.

If your computer cannot see the Ray then your computer is on a different subnet. If that is the case then we need more info regarding your network or you can call Sonos Tech support as suggested by ​@Airgetlam.

I have no idea what you mean by the first 3 questions but I have switched the Ray off & back on.

I haven’t tried wiring it to my router but ir looks like it is being recognised by my computer but I could give this a go.

I called Sonos Support It cost me £12.00 for about 2 minutes & there was an hour and 10 minutes wait, so I didn’t wait.

I will try the sonos thread you have highlighted above & see if anyone else has any ideas. Thank you so much for answering.

Why did it cost 12 pounds for you to call Sonos support? Here in the US, it’s a toll free call, I’d have assumed it was much the same in the UK?

Thank you all so much for your ideas. I will be trying those (tomorrow!!) . I’ve been messing about with this for about 3 hours now. Frustrating.

 

PS I have tried to change the sound on my computer ro the suggested ones (dolby etc) but there does not seem to be an option to do this. I’ve even looked it up on Google!!

I have a feeling they called a scam number, not actual Sonos support. Even in the UK 6 quid a minute seems steep for a phone call.

Hi All,

 

I’ve done everything that everyone suggested & still no sound. PC see Ray, Ray main device for sound. All the setting are as suggested. I even bought a new optical cable just in case. So I give up; last thing is I check the Ray out as a stand-alone Sonos speaker. Then I get someone technical in to look at it!!!!
