Has anyone actually successfully added their own music back onto Sonos now that Sonos claims we have their permission to do so once again? Just curious.
My music library still works. I have it stored on a portable SSD drive and it is connected via USB to my router.
Sonos no longer supports the HTTP and SMBv1 file sharing protocols so be sure to use SMBv2 or SMBv3.
I have had one “Level 2” support call (had three scheduled and finally one actually called) and they took control of my machine remotely with the same unsuccessful outcome. The support person said “this is a known issue” and I would need to wait for the engineers to fix it...no timeline...no alternative other than to do nothing until some magical day in the future when this *might* get fixed. This is unacceptable. My purchase of Sonos equipment was to play my own music library! This worked very well for a few years until this ability was stripped away by Sonos. WHY??? Now I’m told I have this ability back yet I do not. I have been informed to not call support as the engineers are working on it. Unacceptable. Playing my own music functioned perfectly for a few years. They could at least allow me to reverse update to the operating system just prior to them stripping away this ability and then I would never update again.
Never lost my library in the first place so never needed to add it back. S2 on Windows Server.

It looks like it has been over a year since you last updated.
Do not update! I wish I hadn’t.
Sonos was purchased to play my own music and it did so very well for a few years. Then one day they took away the ability to play my own music library. Now Sonos refuses to give it back.
This is like buying a BMW to drive to drive to work, to shop for groceries, go out to dinner, etc. and it does so very well. Then one day a year or so later you drop the vehicle at the dealership for service…….come back later in the day to pick it up and it is missing the wheels and tires. Then be informed by the service tech that BMW no longer believes driving is what the BMW is for; sitting in the garage listening to over the air radio is the new purpose for your vehicle in BMW’s opinion.
Thanks Sonos. Thanks a lot.
I’ve updated S2 every time they’ve released an update, and am still current (just checked!). I have never lost access to my local library, but as pointed out as a requirement previously, I’ve used SMB v3 since it became available for Sonos.

Sonos Level 2 support had control of my machine remotely. Sonos support themselves could not get my music library connected again. It is interesting to see that it does work for some so maybe it is a “Mac” thing. I’ve been using Mac since 2003 and back then it was very common to see tech services not work on Mac products. This is late 2024 and there are still tech services that haven’t figured out how to operate on a Mac?
I don’t store my music on my Mac’s, they’re stored (at the moment) on a WD NAS.
Older Mac OS’s only did SMB v1 as a default, I think, which is why so many threads popped up with people having trouble. Which is also why Sonos used to (be able to) use HTTP for local libraries. If you’re still having issues, you may want to refer to this thread.

I’ve updated plenty. I just use Windows, not a Mac.
People here claiming they never lost the ability aside I still haven’t heard of anyone that has actually been able to restore playing their own music library over the Sonos speakers. Is there anyone?

Hundreds of them. Not to mention that most people who have success adding a library via the support section do not even bother to post here.
And by the way, calling legitimate posters ”fanbots” is against TOS of this site. Try to be more polite, please.

The File Share on my Windows Server has worked on both my S1 and S2 systems since the day I set it up, years ago. The http-server Sonos Library Service that was deprecated earlier this year required me to reconfigure to get that to work again. No big deal.
I have no idea what nonsense Mac users have to do for file sharing, but I do know it changes with every major OS release because Apple care not a jot about back-compat.

Local libraries are working fine here with a NAS and a Windows 10 PC too. I’ve never not had access to my local library tracks… See example screen-capture (attached) taken from my iPad controller, which was recorded back in mid-June this year …and the local libraries are still working fine now.

Never lost mine which is on a SonicTransporter i5 NAS. Did experiment with a Windows 10 test share. Worked just fine. Don’t want my computer on 24/7 so dumped the test share.
I guess since I never miss an update and my library still works any of my suggestions out too.
The update mess hits every user based on their setup, goes from none to dead.

Again, still haven’t heard from anyone able to restore. Anyone?
Just as I thought. Guess I will start researching alternatives to replace these worthless boxes.

Restore? - Do you mean to understand how to change the library share protocol from HTTP, or SMBv1, to SMBv2, or higher? There’s already plenty of community threads that cover these things, most emerged after the Sonos announcement in the App sometime back in April 2024 (attached) - take these below links, just as examples, all depending of course on the type of library share in situ…
For MacOS:
For Windows:
For NAS:
Consult the user-manual, but in most cases it’s a simple case of accessing the NAS settings and changing SMB (server message block) sharing protocol to a higher version.

Yes. Plenty of links, but no solutions.
Sonos Level 2 support even took control of my machine remotely, played around a bit doing the same things all the links say to do (just as I did) and it still didn’t work. I’m beginning to see that this is just a smokescreen to hold off the criticism and another total waste of my time (again). There is no “solution” as this is an “intended” situation.
So I ask again (knowing the answer already): Is there anyone who has been able to (let’s not use the word “restore”) play their own music library on their fraudulent Sonos devices? (watching the clock to see how long it takes another Sonos employee to send me links and stories of how “hundreds” have been able to do so despite Sonos employees actually NOT being able to make it work)
Good grief.
Good grief.
exactly.
glad you finally made the connection.
when your own coworkers can’t make it work then it is a real problem.

I don’t see any Sonos employees in this thread and I’m certainly not an employee myself. I’m long retired. All Sonos Staff are clearly marked in this community. Maybe it’s a case that the products/hardware involved in your configuration are unsupported and unable to use the SMBv2 (or higher) sharing protocol, or maybe something is not configured correctly that the Sonos Support person was unaware of. It can be any one of a number of reasons that a local network music share isn’t working.
Some examples include … incorrect network security mode, incorrect setup of the share, or credentials. Too many (or incorrect) non-alphanumeric characters in the Netbios name of the PC, incorrect drive format, wrong use of HTTP setup instead of SMB. Firewall or VPN security getting in the way etc. to name but a few of a good many things you may need to go onto check yourself as system owner/administrator.

Same scenario…told the same thing by Sonos. Music library through the Sonos app doesn’t exist any longer. Speaker system used to work perfectly for years and now just dust collectors. Sonos response since May 2024 to present is ‘nothing they can do..wait for an update’. It’s now going into December. Since when is this level of incompetency and borderline defrauding consumers after the purchase of thousands of dollars of useless speakers not investigated by consumer affairs or the appropriate government agency???
I’ve been told the same...”wait for an update.”
There WILL BE NO update. There are a few employees that will come on here and repeatedly say “mine never went away” and give you the same worthless links (they also tell you they’re not employees). I’ve wasted enough precious time. Time to trash this worthless equipment and move on. The lies have become laughable.
Just give me the software version prior to the stripping away and I will never update again. At least I could salvage some use from this worthless trash with “Sonos” printed on it.
