Question

iOS Volume Control difficult to adjust with fingers

Im using Sonos app (v 80.16.33 ie the most recent version iOS released 2 weeks ago as of agent 15, 2025).

When attempting to use the horizontal sliders for Volume Control of speakers individually or as a room, I find it extremely difficult to adjust with my finger the volume in small increments eg (+/-1 increments) - especially attempting to reduce the volume.

I happen to have a surround setup with Sonos arc, and controlling the surround setup’s volume settings in the surround settings → “Surround Volume” for “TV” and “Music”, there are much appreciated “-“ and “+” buttons to the left and the right of the finger slider volume control.

I suggest and kindly request that the Sonos app (at least for iOS) throughout the app adds the “-“ and “+” to the left and right of the end of all all the volume sliders in the app (ie for all speakers playing music) - to make it easier to adjust playing volume in small increments.

Did you find what you were looking for?

Have you tried tapping the slider?

I agree and made the request months ago.
Naim do it - surely it’s not that difficult for Sonos to implement

@Baldrick 101

I guess you didn’t quite understand @106rallye ‘s response….

  • Tapping the volume slider LINE before or after the Dot moves the volume up or down in one (1) degree increments.

Thanks for trying to help me @AjTrek1. I accept that it’s possible to do that but trying to go from level 6 to 3 is really difficult using that method as I normally end up muting the system! I think it would be an improvement if that left side mute button was a minus button.

YES!!  This would be a massive help.  Once below about 10 it is difficult on a phone screen to select lower number with the mute button getting in the way. If this were a minus it would be great.  Maybe make it mute if pressed for longer than a second?

Come on Sonos - can you do it?

Hi @e.f.x

Welcome to the Sonos Community!

Thank you - I've marked this thread as a feature request and it will be seen by the relevant teams for consideration. Keep the ideas coming!

I agree, I also more often that not muting the system when the volume is lower than 12 or so with the apping method, with my thumb or pinger pad trying to hit the slider line before the dot often gets interpreted by the app as my digit hitting the mute button - so I’d much prefer the developers adding the minus and plus buttons on each end of the slider (possibly keeping the mute and the level value to the most left and most right.

I also find, given I live in an apartment, that most of my volume control needs is from 1 to 25 or so, (unless I want to play louder for the neighbours to hear) - I would prefer the 1 to 25 range somehow was adjusted that 1 to 25 covered more that the linear slider scale. Perhaps a solution is that the volume control increment should be in dB - if this isn’t already the case - and thereby the slider that controls volume does so logarithmically. Each volume increase increment/decrement would be implemented to give an increase/decrease of volume in dB (eg +/1 dB per increment changed). Furthermore, in settings, a new slider there labeled “Volume increment per step in dB” (such as there is one for “Maximum Volume” - where one can adjust the setting for the Volume dB interval according to the needs and taste fo the user eg be able to callibrate the increment to change from 1dB to 2db to 3db intervals according to taste of the user.

Repost, my original post was deleted/lost by the wonderful forum software:

There could be a simple UI change Sonos (or the dev platform that Sonos uses for iOS), remove the need for users to play target practice with the volume sliders. Currently you have to hit the ‘dot’ on the volume slider very precisely to slide, which can be an issue on small devices and/or large/clumsy fingers.

An alternative approach would be to slide finger anywhere on the slider to slide the dot/volume, ie not have to slide the dot.

For example of this see the Apple Music App on iOS when playing some music.

Completely agree e.f.x - The adjustable dB steps would also be a nice feature to have. For now though I’d be happy just to have the suggested improvement. I also have a Naim streamer and their app has a plus and minus button - it works perfectly.

How do you get Sonos development team to add this as a feature request?
