Background Noise from TV when using Beam (Gen2)

I have a LG OLED55C44 TV and SONOS Beam (Gen 2) connected via HDMI ARC Port. No other speakers in the setup.

When listening to live TV programmes ( BBC News ) there is a background noise which sounds like the air conditioning is on high in the studio. It is the  same if I use iPlayer via Sky Stream, or via the app on the TV

Streaming via Netflix or other pre-recorded BBC programmes the sound is clear and Dolby ATMOS works.

On the TV I am not offered any advanced settings as the TV is set for sound out via HDMI/ARC port.

Any ideas?

Regards,

David

Not sure, on your first question, but it seems to me you’d get that across all programs, and not just one type. Sonos doesn’t know what type of program it is, just that they’re  receiving X to decode, and play.

I would recommend that you submit a system diagnostic within 10 minutes of experiencing this problem, and call Sonos Support to discuss it. But don’t post the resulting diagnostic number here, they get sensitive about GDPR.

There may be information included in the diagnostic that will help Sonos pinpoint the issue and help you find a solution.

When you speak directly to the Support staff, they have tools at their disposal that will allow them to give you advice specific to your network and Sonos system.

As a guess, it’s something in the stream you’re getting from these live TV programs (or programmes, if you prefer). Since it isn’t happening on all streams, it is evidently not an issue with the Sonos itself.

Hi Bruce  - thanks for your feedback. As a test, I disconnected the HDMI/ SONOS Beam and tried the internal speakers in the TV. In this format the background noise is not evident.

So it seems to me it is the way the Beam is managing the sound being sent from the TV on these live broadcasts. Trying to change settings in the SONOS app does little to reduce the background noise.

Or is it that the SONOS beam accentuates all sounds much more than the internal speakers?

Is there any advice on what I could do on the setup?

Regards,

David
