I recently bought the Sonos Arc Ultra and an Apple TV 4K. I believe my setup is correct, but I can't select Atmos on the Apple TV 4K—only Stereo, Dolby 5.1, or Off.

Here’s my setup:

  • Sonos Devices:

    • Arc Ultra
    • Sub 4
    • 2x Era 300s
  • TV: Samsung QN82Q6FNA

  • Apple TV 4K: Gen 3

Connections:

  1. I’m using the Sonos-provided HDMI cable from the Arc Ultra to the Samsung TV’s ARC (Audio Return Channel) port.
  2. The Apple TV 4K is connected to a regular HDMI port on the TV.

I also tried connecting the Apple TV to the Arc Ultra via Bluetooth, but it’s inconvenient because I have to manually switch the audio to Bluetooth every time I turn it on.

Does anyone know how to enable Atmos on the Apple TV 4K with this setup?

Check there are no updates available for Apple TV 4K, then reboot both TV and Apple TV 4K

Just checked, currently the Apple TV is on webOS 18.1 and there is not an update available.

@bigtimepower, would you be able to share some photos of the audio settings on both your Apple TV and your Samsung TV?

Have you tried going to the expert sound settings on the TV and selected Dolby Digital Plus for HDMI output? This might get you some Atmos support, but only at the lower rates supported by DD+. For higher bit rates an eARC capable TV is required.

If the Arc ultra had an additional HDMI input then that would help but Sonos don’t think of that.

If you can’t get DD+ from the TV to the Arc Ultra, then you may need to get an eARC capable TV to get Atmos.

Ah sorry, I had assumed you upgraded from the Arc and were previously getting Dolby Atmos, but lost the ability with Arc Ultra.

Dolby Atmos on Apple TV 4K uses a higher bandwidth and generally requires an eARC connection, unless the television can convert Dolby MAT to DD+, which very few televisions have the capability to do so.

As a minimum, as @Ian_S states, the TV’s HDMI output needs to be set to Dolby Digital Plus. If you are still unable to select Dolby Atmos on Apple TV 4K then you could look into an audio extractor, such as HDFury Arcana, or upgrading the TV.

Assuming this is the correct 2018 tv, your tv doesn’t pass Atmos.  https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/samsung/q6fn-q6-q6f-qled-2018

audio passthrough

- ARC  Yes (HDMI 4)

- eARC support  No

- Dolby Atmos via TrueHD via eARC  No

- DTS:X via DTS-HD MA via eARC  No

- 5.1 Dolby Digital via ARC  Yes

- 5.1 DTS via ARC  No

- 5.1 Dolby Digital via Optical  Yes

- 5.1 DTS via Optical  No

If you want the Ultra to shine, and accept Atmos audio connect, you will either need a 3rd party device as mentioned above, or upgrade your tv to a new that supports eARC/Atmos audio output.

Ahh ok, so just need a new TV then. :D

Is the HDFury Arcana the only option other than just getting a newer Tele?

Orei and Feintech are other manufacturers to consider.

The VAX04101 HDMI eARC Pass Switch 4x1 for Soundbar looks great! Too bad it seems impossible to find.

I just purchased the HD Fury Arcana off Ebay for a total of 173, hopefully this solves my issue.  Thanks everyone.

While waiting for the HD Fury, I am trying to set TV to Dolby Digital +, looks like it is greyed out.  Saw somewhere to switch to tv speakers to set this.  When I go to set it to TV speakers it automatically switches back to Receiver (HDMI).  So it is forcing that.  Does not allow me to change sound output.

So I picked up the HD Fury Arcana2. I think I have all settings setup physically correct. Is there any settings on the Arcana, Apple or Samsung I need to make sure are set to get correct picture and sound out put for DV and Atmos? Just put on Dune on Apple TV with Dolby Atmos, and it still says Dolby 5.1 in my app.
