It seems hard to believe, but that seems to be the unanimous “rumor” here. I am hoping it’s just because the implementation in the new app immature, and that maybe some time in the future this will work again.

But, could Sonos comment? Is the support for playing from a music library going away?

This has information on coming (returning) features for the next few weeks…

Thanks! And of course LOL : “coming in june - ability to use your Sonos again”

They should send all affected users a significant rebate check to use against future purchases.  Only 2 fixes to this problem.

  1. Fix the problem and grant access to music library playback and recapture the Sonos playlists that were kept in safe keeping by Sonos.  For some people (myself included) these playlists were curated over YEARS and now can’t be utilized.
  2. Jerry Maguire “show me the $”

It is true. They did get rid of it.

Evidence: it’s been removed.

I’m able to play my local library on Sonos since the update.  There are a few caveats that may or may not apply to others.

  1. I’m playing from an NAS.
  2. The NAS is configured for SMB 2.
  3. The queue controls are greatly reduced.  Basically, you can only replace the queue.

That’s great for you. I also have my music on a NAS that is setup for SMB2. I can’t play anything, because it keeps getting diverted to the wrong room.

Yes Sonos new tag line is “Listen to all the music on earth; except your own.” I’ve already start recommending solutions for listening to local music libraries other than Sonos to others and won’t be purchasing any new Sonos product. You can only vote with your money - Only way they’ll listen. Sonos treats long time users who made their equipment popular like suckers and it’s time we treat Sonos like one.

The workaround is to use the SonoPhone or SonoPad apps. Cheap and effective, they work well with local NAS libraries, just like the Sonos app used to…

TBH, I may never return to using the new Sonos controller, which is a software abomination.

I’m planning on trying that out. But you do still need to use a Sonos controller for system configuration and such, yes?

Our house is strictly Mac-based and this SMB stuff that’s popped up recently is all Greek to me. I never had to be concerned with it nor do I want to be now.  What I did learn is that my simple USB drives (containing my Sonos Libraries) are NADs and involve some modicum of SMB something or other; where I do not know. What I DO know is that my Sonos system used to work perfectly and now it doesn’t work at all.  As for no support for NADs, for some of us our security wasn’t in peril and, personally,  I feel we should be able to decide our cyber fate on our own.  The result this time around was that the Sonos app was the greatest danger.  Please tell us what exactly you’ve saved us all from.

The origonal idea.

Multi room n music collection.

Not headphone.

The company has lost direction and i lost faith

PURE SOLID CRAP. 0 STAR!

So I've spent thousands of £ on a system that now won't let me play my own music. You couldn't make this stuff up.

Sort this out, Sonos.

Sonos, give your clients/customers access to the previous version of the Sonos App. Quit playing dictator and listen to your customers for a change. As a Sonos user for almost 20 years this is the first time I have launched a public complaint but I this latest update is total JUNK and has ruined the Sonos experience for far too many! Give us options and let us choose IF and WHEN we want to upgrade.

I am one of many who have lost access to a local library.  Win 11 stored on a local hard drive, access denied.  I am done.  I don’t play music at home very often and every time there has been a problem with the app.  Usually a call to support, sometimes an hour long resolves it.  This time I was told an hour wait.  I will try another solution this week. Anybody want some Sonos 5’s?

Same here!  Actually, my windows desktop still had the ability to use the local library up until a couple of days ago.  I have hundreds of albums on my computer and custom playlists that I spent 50 + hours creating.  I really do hope they bring everything back in June like they say.

Has Sonos actually said that functionality will return in June? I attempted to play music this week from my own music library, something I have been doing for years on my Sonos system, to find that my library was missing from my music options. After consulting the Sonos help pages to see why I kept getting error messages it just advised to change firewall and privacy settings on my MacOS. After more than two hours changing a setting, attempting connection, changing another setting, attempting connection, changing another setting, attempting connection, changing another….well, you get it, I came here to seek advice from others. I get here and find out Sonos stole this ability from me! Sonos did not even mention this on the help pages and instead lead users to make changes on their systems to get it to work. Own it Sonos, if you remove functionality (that I PAID FOR by the way) the TELL US that you removed functionality. I cannot find anything on the website that mentions this is being returned in June….where did others see this?

It is mentioned in this FAQ article.

My understanding is that the FAQ article will be updated as needed.

I bought the Port to allow me to listen to music on my NAS and this functionality has been removed. That is appalling customer service and if this is not restored soon I will be getting rid of Sonos gear.

They won't come out and say that. Maybe most of the company even believes it's untrue. Rather than make an official announcement, It's more in their interest to be able to claim they support your file library, then make it increasingly unusable over time so that more people abandon the whole notion of actually owning a collection of music files. I would not be at all surprised if this turns out to be actual corporate strategy to drive more business to the streaming services they partner with.

There is absolutely no evidence or mechanism to substantiate the claim that there is a corporate strategy to drive business to 'partner' streaming services.  Many of the music services are free to use so where's the incentive to cripple music library access?

Owning and storing large collections of music files is a diminishing practice generally. Nothing to do with a Sonos driven conspiracy to kill off personal file creation and storage.

So like everyone else now Sonos  won't link with my Music library so for a month now I cant play music despite having spoken to their help desk over 6 months ago telling them that there were issues with the way Sonos interacted with my MACs new operating system Ventura but they weren’t interested and said there was nothing they could do probably because they knew even bigger Stuff was going to hit the fan soon.  Now I am left wondering why I bothered buying speakers from a company who clearly cant be bothered looking after their customers.

I bought the Sonos Port from a HiFi dealer to allow me to use my existing  set up to listen to streaming services and to my CD and Vinyl collection which I ripped to a NAS. This was some time ago but if I had bought this recently I would be asking for my money back. I am certain these retailers are well aware of this and will not be happy.

I’m using a Western Digital MyCloud device, running SMB v3, and not having any issues playing my music from it. This has been my setup for years. When S2 came out, I did need to go in to the software for the NAS and adjust the SMB version (in fact, if memory serves, WD sent out an update that turned off version 1, which caused me to learn about all this), but it has been working for years in this configuration. While I’ve temporarily lost the ability to search (and amend?) my playlists, they do continue to play. I’m patiently waiting for Sonos to update their software for full parity, in the meantime, the fact that it continues to play my playlists stored on my NAS is a good thing, much appreciated, and exactly what I purchased my Sonos system for.

Also a Mac/Apple user here. When I recently upgraded to a new Mac book, Apple made it super easy to transition.

but stupid me decided to move my iTunes library from my Mac book to my NAS. It used to work perfecLy with Sonos, but now the path to my MacBook is no longer valid.

and … by someone’s wisdom seemingly superior to mine, Sonos decided to remove any ability to add/maintain a music library. So I’m basically hosed. My only option right now is to use the music player on my device and use my Apple device app to point the music to my Sonos system.

totally ass backwards.

btw … looks like Sonos stock price (ticker SONO) is off  15-20% over the past 2-3 months.

I’m with amblue02. It took me years to put files into my Libraries - and not just MP3s. I’ve added quite a few artists/albums from my large collection of CDs as well as downloaded FLAC files and the like. One can see why Sonos just had a 25% off almost everything sale.  As for their new headphones, they can stuff em.  Pretty tasteless to release that product while we plebes are directed to Support and/or carry out time consuming workarounds that usually don’t work.  Let us poor ignorant knuckle draggers use our NAS drives and take the risk of a cyber security incident which, by the way, NEVER happened previously.  But, not to worry, a WEB app (that doesn’t work either) will ensure one isn’t violated.  Yeah, right.
