Large cell data usage with spotify connect + Sonos

Hello,

I understand from what I know of Spotify Connect enabled devices that it’s pulling in the stream directly from the source (Spotify) as opposed to the device that initiated the stream (my cellphone -iphone12). However, it appears it’s not behaving correctly. I figured I would check with the Sonos community before hopping over to Spotify.

Observation

  • Cell phone connected to home network via Wifi. I started playing music on my Sonos speaker(s).
  • I reset my cellular statistics
  • I left the house for about 1-1.5 hours for a class (phone was idle)
  • Came back home and spotify still playing on Sonos speakers
  • Checked cellular statics and it says Spotify consumed about 1GB of data

Spotify Settings

  • Datasaver was enabled
  • Video podcasts - Download audio only set to true
  • Video podcasts - Stream audio only = set to true (I don’t think I am subscribed to video podcasts)
  • Playback (Disabled due to option 1 above)
  • Audio Quality (Disabled due to option 1 above)

Question: Is there any setting on the Sonos side that would cause this?

Given the highest bitrate of Spotify (320 kbps), that would be about ~140MB in an hour. Definitely not 1GB

Hi @panda456789, welcome to the Sonos Community!

I use Spotify Connect to stream to my speakers as well, though I use it from my computer rather than my phone. Checking the data use between both devices, I’m around 1.5GB per month which is below the average for the normal bitrate stream, but seems to be the expected amount. From what I can see on Google, the highest is around 7GB a month, so having 1GB an hour definitely doesn’t seem right.

I see that other users mention on Reddit and the Spotify forums that music videos and podcast videos can be the main culprit of a higher data use, but since you’ve disable them then we can rule that out. I don’t see anything on the Sonos side that would effect this (since we don’t need the video information), and I haven’t seen any other users mention this before. I would recommend you reach out to Spotify to troubleshoot this with them.

If you don’t make any progress, then please reach out to our support team. It’s possible this is something new that’s started occurring and, if so, support cases will be needed by our engineers for more information,

I hope this helps!
