Can I connect sonos arc ultra to play:1

I just upgraded from sonos beam to the new sonos arc ultra. I have a pair of play:1 speakers. Can I use them as surrounds?

Best answer by Mr. T

Potentially a bug in the app/device firmware as Sonos confirmed the Play:1 would not be a compatible surround with Arc Ultra.

No, the Play:1s are not compatible surrounds with Arc Ultra.

Which Sonos speakers work as surrounds with Arc Ultra?

A matching pair of the following speakers will work as surrounds: Era 300, Era 100, Sonos One (including SL), Sonos Five, and SYMFONISK (Gen 2) speakers. You can also use Amp to power in-wall, in-ceiling, or other passive speakers as surrounds.

ok, so my next follow up question is - I also have a Sonos sub: Gen 3. The Arc Ultra will be connected to this sub. So will the sub act as a passthrough and help in connecting the play:1 as surrounds to the whole setup?

No, you cannot use the Play:1s as surrounds with Arc Ultra.

The Play:1s will still work as a stereo pair in a separate room or in individual rooms in the app.

It is so darn confusing!! The app has now discovered the play:1s and is allowing me to add it as surround. It asked for an update and that seems to somehow unlock it.

Are they possibly Ones rather than Play:1s?

I am 100% sure they are play:1s. The control buttons are located at the edge and not in the center. See the screenshot from my sonos app below -

Well the OP seems to have managed to add them given their screenshot above, but I would expect a future update to stop them being added as surrounds.

If the Play 1 have actually been added as surrounds for the Arc Ultra as OP screen shot to us,  I most admit and openly protest the gross injustice of having a future upgrade (ie firmware reconfigure) eliminate the hardware’s capacity to communicate and link up.  Especially since I forked over nearly 2 grand in cash to buy a sub 4 and arc ultra and what I’m seeing is it is possible for the devices to communicate and engage and that they would do something to a loyal consumer base as odious as prevent those loyal customers from using the devices they paid for in a desired way that would be possible were it not for that company purposely recoding the device’s communication protocol to force audio components into retirement.  If they can undo the ability for two devices to link up then they can REDO that ability.  I’m not above returning this arc ultra and sub 4 for a refund on the principal of forcing customers into purchasing new components for their audio system when their old components are so gently used they’re nearly new.  Customers who spread their personal appreciation for a product only to have the company crap on that loyalty by extracting money from them in rather unscrupulous business practices.  What say you Sonos?

Once you factory reset the Play:1 it got added as surrounds and they work fine. Now Sonos may realize it later and remove it in the next app upgrade.

I am also frustrated by the feeble bass response when using ultra and sub gen 3. Sonos beam sounds better with sub than the ultra( trueplay). I will be returning the Arc ultra at this point as this product may be good as a standalone soundbar but does not integrate well with the existing sonos components.

another poor look if confirmed but they have been out for a long time now. little computers don’t last forever.

This is very confusing. In our family room we have a setup with a playbar (series A100), a sub(series A100), two  play 1 (series A101). Rest of the house we have a ton of other sonos devices.  We put a stop on updating the entire system due to the poor application.

My question.Im looking to upgrade to get Atmos and eARC.  For Sonos, can i replace the playbar with a ARC (or ARC Ultra), or do i need to replace the entire setup?

Or should i just move on to another brand?

Thanks for your help

Kenneth

The Arc would be a simple replacement.

The Ultra might have issues with the play 1s, Ones if you have them would work, as would Eras.

I'd go with the Ultra in any case, I  think it is a nice upgrade of the original Arc. Mine is on order and I'll be moving the Arc.

You'd need to be on the latest version to add either. The good news is the Sonos App is much improved, still far to go but a big step up from May.

Thanks, as you wrote there might be issues so probably not sustainable to say on the Sonos platform. For example, we have Sonos amps and speakers in our dining, family, guest room, in the garage, outside, kids rooms etc. the recent app mess ( really no recent improvement)made me consider to drop the whole platform idea. It’s fine to upgrade a room unit here and there but if one pushes us to upgrade all it’s probably time to drop sonos.  Love the sonos product but not the sonos product management.

Same. Playbar —> Arc Ultra is a no go for me now given I’m using play:1s as rear. Might as well consider different system if I need to change all speakers anyway. Don’t like the feeling of it esp. when Play:1 proved to be capable.

Likely a hardware issue, since the PLAY:1 was designed and manufactured so long ago. At some point, the ability to access and process newer data streams would be compromised, so Sonos may have bit the bullet and made this choice, probably to some amount of internal resistance, but still necessary.

Unlikely a hardware issue as users have added Play:1s as surrounds with Arc Ultra and I’ve not seen any subsequent post from said users complaining about the surrounds not working.

The official response Sonos gave on Reddit for Play:1s being unsupported surrounds was also nonsense.

Totally agree. Even leave the pairing option open but stay “not officially supported” will make their customer happier.
