I have in parts a pretty old system:

  • two play:1 from 2014, paired with a sub from 2019
  • two move from 2020

it’s never hard connection problems. e.g. I see all speakers in my system. and I can always start music on them. but the reaction time is terrible. changing a song sometimes can take 10-30 sec and is almost never instant. same for changing the volume. sometimes it doesn’t react at all and I can not even stop the music any more. there is one peculiar effect, that might ring a bell with someone: if I switch from bluetooth to sonos the music continues on spotify, but I don’t have any sound. only if I change the position in the song the sound will come.

  1. I did the commonly recommended things like resetting router and speaker. but if you think it makes sense to do it again, should I try with only a subset of speakers first?
  2. I never have any other problems with my WIFI/router.
  3. obviously it’s not the internet connection (via bluetooth everything is fine)
  4. I usually control the music via the spotify app but the problems are the same with the sonos app.

this got so annyoing that I am mostly using my JBL bluetooth system. and I am thinking about kicking out my sonos system all together (and replacing it with a big bluetooth system)

BUT: I love the sound of the sonos system and would love this to work. maybe you can give me recommendation how to best address this?

e.g. is there a chance that the culprit is the old PLAY:1 speakers? is it possible that they break the whole sonos system, even if I am not even using the PLAY:1 speaker (and only the MOVE speaker)? is it worth trying the setup with MOVE and nothing else?

e.g. or should I try a new pair of ERA100 and see if I still see the same problems? is there hope, that my move speader will work normal then as well?

Can’t be of help but just a comment that my friend has a pair of old Play:1 and a playbar and has the same issue with the volume lag and connection problems. The play.sonos.com (desktop site version on mobile phone) and windows desktop app work faster for him. I think others also have issues with older speakers (and there also are users who don’t have issues with those same models).

My guess is that either the older speakers with less memory suffer with the new architecture or there’s something in the Wi-Fi router/network setup that the new Sonos app doesn’t like so much. I’ve read posts where users have written that they’ve replaced their router and Sonos app then works much better. But go figure what the underlying issue is :)

I’ve tried asking Sonos if they know if it’s some setting in routers that affect the app but so far have just learned a new word in reference to ‘esoteric bugs’.

hahaha, thanks!

I probably have two new speakers here and test them for a while.

and then send them back if it’s not working.

The older Play 1 speakers would probably work better if one of them is wired to your router. Many users have reported the same volume issues with older speakers in recent months. Older speakers lack the processing power newer speakers have.

So it would be a good idea to try some newer speakers to see if they work better for you.

so the sonos support (who are very friendly) did a repeated diagnostics/rebooting without any success.

they changed some things on the WIFi as well (e.g. 2.4 GHz and different band) which did some improvement but still not good.

they also said that there seems to be some internal problem that they are working on some that is most likely the culprit and that I need to be just patient.

I think it’s worth a last check with new speaker before I will decide to get rid of Sonos. they sound is really nice, but this stuff is really annoying.
