Today we are introducing the most extensive app redesign ever, creating an unprecedented streaming experience that allows listeners to organize their favorite playlists, stations, albums and more from over 100 services on one customizable Home screen.

Home Screen

The new Home screen provides faster access to Sonos system controls with one easy swipe up, making tab to tab jumping a thing of the past. As a leader in sound experience that’s focused on creating a better way to listen, Sonos intentionally redesigned the app on a modern software platform for an easier, faster and better experience that can support more rapid innovation.

The reimagined app supports all existing S2 products and will be available globally through a software update for the S2 mobile app.

100+ streaming services, one Home screen

The redesigned Sonos app prioritizes a listening experience that’s human - allowing you to bring your true favorites front and center and giving you more control to make your streaming experience your own.

  • Get into your music (and off the app) faster: No need to tap between tabs — the new Home screen serves up all your favorite content and controls, all in one place. Quickly jump back into your recently played, browse libraries and recommendations from your preferred services, and fill your home with music and all the sounds you love.
  • Customize and curate: Enjoy unparalleled curation by designing your Home screen to reflect how you listen. Pin rows of your favorite content and services; then move, edit, or rearrange them to your liking.
  • Search every streaming library: Look for an artist, song, podcast, or audiobook across all your preferred streaming apps at once via an easy-to-use search bar that’s always available right on your Home screen.
  • Elevated system control: Swipe up from the bottom of your Home screen to seamlessly control your entire system and access a visual overview of what’s playing on each of your products, quickly group speakers, and dial in on the perfect volume from anywhere in the app.

Accessible from any modern web browser, a brand new web app allows listeners the same seamless system control as the mobile app.

The new Web App

The Web App will be available alongside the redesigned mobile app on May 7, 2024.

The alarm is finally back, but you still have a loooooong way to go. Luckily I only upgraded noe on the three devices I use to control my system. I will not upgrade the remaining the units untill:

  • Acces to alarm is easier (e.g side-by-side with the group roms and play button in My System)
  • All the error messages I get on the upgraded device are gone
  • Sleep timer i back

Here’s Patrick’s reply to these serious issues:

LOL, it’s from May 2020 - see any pattern here?  Time for new leadership before this ship sinks.  Oh and check out today’s major article in WaPo on Sonos’ hated app.  Not good!

You ruin loyal customers expensive whole-home audio systems with rushed-out trash software and people are going rightly complain!

Now I’m getting complaints from friends and family I suggested Sonos speakers/amps to a few years ago.  Yikes!  What a way to screw a once great brand Sonos leadership!

Haven't read through the 50+ pages so sorry if this was already asked and answered but I have 2 issues after the Sonos app was updated on my Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.

1. When launching the app, it takes anywhere from 10 seconds up to about 1 minute or sometimes even longer before I see my devices and the content. Prior to this, all I see is a message telling me no Sonos products could be found and an option to setup a new system. Then suddenly, the app finds my system and I can start using the app.

2. I keep being informed by my mobile phone where I'm running the Sonos app from I have apps draining my battery by constantly looking for other nearby devices via Bluetooth.

What on earth is going on with the new app and how could these kind of issues slip through the net before the new version was made public and when can we expect to have these issues addressed?

Newest iOS update BROKE the Subsonic connection.  I have been struggling to reach someone at Sonos.  No luck with the chatbot or phone line.  Emailed the CEO since I don’t know what else to do.  Please fix this!  This breaks my family’s entire music setup.

This has played havoc with my system and I have had to factory reset many pf my products. This is such a faff and my system is still not working. I cannot connect my Sub-Mini or surrounds. Awful as seems to be the case with all app upgrades. The pits.

My wife hates me.

Thanks Sonos.

The new sonos app is complete garbage. System now completely broken.

The new app is a bug fest on Android… probably fewer people use Android, but for me, it’s a total joke.  Completely random dropping of speakers every 30 seconds… then back on.… you change things and they don’t take effect, or they do but about 5 mins later (not kidding)… my system is more or less unusable now… was finally stable for 6 months until the upgrade

oh and about the upgrade, it still takes 8 clicks to get to the music queue… super annoying

Rather dubious about this, especially as the ‘Preview the update’ button in the email did not do so. I just hope that this does not turn out to be the equivalent of ‘New Improved Recipe’ on foodstuffs, which usually signifies disaster!

Unfortunately, you were spot on here… I’d call it a downgrade… super buggy and actually harder to use

So folks, I have now started to sell off my Sonos equipment. I have ordered two Homepods to see if I can live with them. I will miss the easy of use of Sonos, especially versions before S2. S2 has caused me so much issues where I suddenly can’t control speakers, music drop outs, pairing issues, app takes forever to start on latest gen Apple devices etc etc. This new app was the huge straw that broke the camels back.

It’s strange how I started with 6 Airplay devices and migrated to Sonos. Now I migrate back to an Apple solution again. I will miss the portability of the Move devices and the play que etc.

I think this moment is the start of a downward momentum for Sonos where they eventually will be bancrupt. I have recommended sonos to about 10 friends which I probably now need to help move out.

I am sure sales will go down right now.  To compensate Sonos will start charging us for stuff we don’t need. This will move users away.

I give them two years, then Sonos is no more.

I am sure they will eventually fix the app sort of, but the lag introduced with the cloud control will never go away.

YES! I sold the last Sonos shares from my 401k mix.

You appoint a CEO from a failed tech company (Blackberry) and think they’ll make Sonos a better company???  Sonos is going the way of Blackberry.  BYE!

I missed that point, it’s a failure for sure, what where they thinking? Blackberry CEO? Explains everything.

Get used to it, the new app doesnt control the speakers directly from phone to speaker anymore but all the network traffic goes through Sonos servers hence giving you much more lag. Further they have built the app on some platform that shares the same base so probably no optimizations for Android whatsoever.

What about local libraries!  This is a massively import feature for many users who don’t want to stream, this is the reason I bought Sonos to link to existing Apple library. Is this going to be available, if  not my system is redundant to me!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks, but with my idiot hat on how will this work with library on a Mac? I would normally, before all this debacle, configure my Sonos on the Mac to point to the apple library

Hey folks. Just to confirm, the German blog explodes by criticism as well.

In the future this launch will  serve well in economics and management schools as an example how to destroy customer relations in a sudden and intentional way.

Just thought I would add my ire - this morning, most of our system will not work. Finally brought non Sonos portable speaker in to bedroom to replace our now dead Sonos speakers  - nice one Sonos, you have made playing music/listening to the radio a pain in the neck/lottery. Can we please have the old app back?

For the person who mentioned Plex you are a star 🌟. Just set it up on my Mac and can now access local library. Haven’t yet managed to sort out playlists (created in ITunes that Sonos could see) but a start. Glad I didn’t throw all my Sonos boxes out of the window in a rage last night 😂, although that could still happen 😃.

Thanks for sharing. This explains the lag but what I don't get is the warning about draining the battery. Even more so when you say the app (mobile phone) no longer communicates directly with the speakers.

Woke up to find my iphone Sonos app has lost all my system service and favourites settings. What on earth possessed you to do this? When will it be fixed? Thankfully you have left the desktop app untrammeled and I can still get my favourite stations and libraries to work. But really!?!

And what lessons will be learned?  Just how to better dupe the punters?  Very little will change because the basic economic model is false.  Long Live Open Source! 😁

Fortunately I dont allow my android to auto-update and can use that as a backup along with the PC app until you sort out this debacle.

I fear there's no way going back after you already updated the app such as in my case?

It’s OK everyone, Sonos are here for us! The fact that they seem deaf to our overwhelming unhappiness - sharing our feedback as they put it - is no great surprise. Only a fall in sales will get their attention.

#BoycottSonos

I am so mad about the new update.  It is worthless.  I am so furious that I am seriously thinking about shit canning my whole system.  I cannot create queues, update the queue and it forces me to use the new update.  This is similitude the new Coke introduction in the ‘90’s.  Something the consumer did not want.  Thank God I didn’t update the app on my iPhone.  At least I can use the Sonos system the way I WANT TOO not some elitist in San Francisco who thinks they know better than I!  Horrible update
