The latest on the Sonos App

Update: May 8, 2025

See below for a run down of what's changed. If you'd like a look at what has changed over the last few months, check out our App Release Notes here, as well as our System (Player) Release Notes here.

This update was deployed in a Phased Rollout, this means that you may (or may not) get the update pushed to your system. Some iOS users have sidestepped this in the past, by going directly to the App Store and updating from there. If you still do not see the update, try refreshing the App Store by pulling down (as if you were refreshing a page) on the Account page that shows all your pending app updates.

Android users - my condolences, you will have to wait it out until it's pushed to your Play Store account.

Current app versions (Released  May 8th 2025)

  • Improvements to system responsiveness

    • This should be seen across all players! (Volume & Commands)

  • Fixed an issue that would produce System Not Found error when using Lutron integrations

Note: This update will be required in order to receive the next update. Don't sleep on this one!

No matter what, I still find the Windows controller app to be the best. it knows each speaker and where you left off, you can add and delete songs and then re-save the playlist so you don’t lose what you edited. It just not practical to keep using ether a laptop or a desktop. When it comes to remembering your place on the playlist, the SonoPad app is great, plus I like the icons and the way it looks. But it has its shortcomings also, like you can’t loop one track and continuously play the same song over and over. I’m trying to work out this piano piece and the loop is helping me. And it also doesn’t edit that well. The Delete button along the bottom deletes the entire playlist. I just thought it was for one track. Why would I want to delete the whole playlist. So anyway, you just can’t win and I have to wait for someone in Sonos to get our feature requests to the right people and then to get them implemented. Moderators, I hope you’re forwarding our concerns up the chain.

It’s odd; if you’re playing a song 50 songs into your playlist and you pause it in the Now Playing window, the Sonos app remembers where you are, even if you completely exit the app and go back in. You’re back to the song you were playing. It’s only when you hit the Playlist button is when you are taken back to the top and lose your place in the queue. It’s like the Playlist button is a reset button. There is just no way to get around that.

It is not the app that remembers anything, it’s the system. That’s why you can close is and open it again still seeing the same when returning. The question is why the phone app (as I understand this thread) cannot get this from the speakers.

Thanks. That’s a good point. In addition to what I mentioned above, I also pressed the play button on the speaker, and it knew the last song that was being played in the playlist. So yes, the app is not communicating with the speaker queue. It does work on the SonoPad app, however.

I just have to mention this being that I just had about 45 minutes of frustration. As part of my daily routine, I wake up my Windows PC and bring up the Sonos Windows Controller app. I noticed that it wasn’t displaying my various rooms and their current playlists. Including the radio station on the Kitchen speaker. I didn’t realize that we had a power failure during the night. Trying to put everything back using the IOS app from my Living Room iPad, was almost impossible. I would open the rooms menu, uncheck and check the various rooms trying to get the playlist back (because you have to start playing a tract from a playlist to get it back into the speaker), and music was coming out from the wrong speaker, and/or the music displayed in the app was from another room and I had to exist the app a number of times to get everything right. I finally gave up and went up to my Windows Controller and had to do it that way. The point I am trying to make is that the IOS app, and I’m sure the other apps, is impossible to try and do anything with. It is not user friendly at all and really needs a complete redesign. I know we are past that and this is not going to happen, but very frustrating trying to put everything back again.

Not sure what point of Sonos is anymore tbh. Their lack of response to Sonos Ace volume issue is a huge red flag to me. They either don’t care or can’t fix such a simple thing. I’m about to offload my entire Sonos setup. Samsung Q990F costs significantly less than Sonos setup and is rated higher than Arc Ultra on rtings. It also has 4k120 VRR Dolby Vision HDMI passthrough, Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and Eclipsa Audio support. And supports Google Home, which Sonos bafflingly dropped support for. Not sure how Sonos can compete with this.

Thank you Sonos!

At last my NAS library is no longer limited to 100 entries, I can now see my whole library on the iPhone/ipad app and there were a few artists that had more than 100 lines all present and correct.

All is forgiven.
