Get to know Sonos Roam

A simultaneous connection to both WiFi and Bluetooth makes streaming wherever you are seamless. When you’re listening at home Roam connects to your system and streams on WiFi, and when you leave it intuitively switches to Bluetooth and automatically re-pairs with your mobile device.

Seamless connectivity also unlocks Bluetooth streaming for your entire system, with the Sonos app allowing you to group any of your Sonos speakers to Roam when streaming with Bluetooth. I pre-ordered a black roam!   Question though about charging - it says this in the FAQ:

“Connect the included USB-C to USB-A cable to a 5V/1A or 2.1A USB power adapter, such as the Sonos Power Adapter.”

Does this mean the Roam has USB-C on its end, but it then plugs into a “regular” USB power adapter, like the one that used to come with every Apple iPhone?  Will that work - the normal iPhone little wall plug (not the newer USB-C ones)?  I don’t know what 2.1A means and if the iPhone wall charger we all used for years is compatible?

Yeah the standard old iPhone plug is normally 2.1A or 2.4A, gives it a lot of options for being charged from a power bank too.

Are you sure -- it looks like the standard 5W apple charger is 1A?  But I assume that works with the Roam:

So it’s a megaboom? Bought one of those a while ago because of Sonos’ problem with AirPlay 2 and have been pretty happy for what it is. I’ll wait to see how it sounds. Love the Move, if it’s in that ballpark I’ll move to the Roam. Still bitter about my bricked Play 5 tho.

The Move started selling before Sonos ended all new features and products on the S1 system. 

Can the Roam safely be used as a shower radio daily?  Obviously charging outside the shower. 

Pre ordered pretty much straight away, the move was excessive for me but this is perfect. 

Does anyone know what this means?

You can stream music via BT to the Roam and if the Roam is grouped with other Sonos speakers it will use SonosNet to play the music on all the speakers.

Can the Roam safely be used as a shower radio daily?  Obviously charging outside the shower. 

The Roam is “waterproof up to three feet for 30 minutes” so I imagine it could handle daily showers.

Would of been good if this could have had some built in upfiring speakers so it could be used as atoms rears for the ARC, think something like that was more needed than this.

ok I’ve just pre-ordered one for my bathroom but what I really was hoping to see was upward firing rear atmos speakers to complete my dual sub arc setup.

What you are asking for is a completely different type of speaker for a completely different purpose. And how do you know Sonos isn’t developing a rear surround speaker that includes an upfiring speaker?

Surely not?  Niche rather than mass market?  A Sonos speaker that is genuinely portable and can bring Bluetooth connectivity to a whole Sonos system should be hugely appealing to many existing customers and potential ones.  I’ll be absolutely amazed if they can be used as surrounds at all.

I will be getting one for the bathroom (seems a common reason!) and for use away from home.  The Move I originally bought for this purpose has become a dining room speaker / portable house/garden speaker and serves this purpose well as it lives on its charging cradle unless in use elsewhere.  I wonder what the battery drain situation will be for the Roam?  I’m happy to buy it purely as an away from home speaker but really hope I can use it in the bathroom say 30 mins a day and charging no more than once a week.  Appreciate I would need to turn it on and off manually when not in use.  All hinges on whether turning it off actually turns it off!  Did this get mentioned in the presentation? / Anyone from Sonos who can comment?

From Sonos Roam FAQ:

“Roam offers up to 10 hours of continuous playback on a single charge. When not in use, Roam switches to sleep mode to conserve power, and the battery can last up to 10 days.”
