Not Five (gen 3) I’m asking about play 5 (gen2)

The Play:5 (Gen 2) has 256MB of RAM and 256MB of Flash.  That makes the update even more underwhelming.

The Five specs are in line with the One SL and the Port.  It looks like Sonos has settled on 512MB for devices without Home Theater functionality or voice control.  Any device that has voice control or HT capability gets upped to 1GB of RAM and Flash.  The only exception is the Arc, which gets 1GB of RAM and 4GB of Flash.

I was talking about the currently sold devices, of course.

I also forgot to mention the Sub.  The Gen 3 only gets 256MB/256MB, but that makes sense because it is always connected to another device that can handle most of the processing.

Thanks ! Do you also know about the processor spec for gen2 play 5? I agree the memory upgrade is underwhelming given that memory is cheap. No change in architecture. Looks like Sonos team ran out of ideas. 

I don’t think the processor information for the Play:5 Gen 2 is available anywhere.

I think that promoting it as a bathroom speaker without having voice control is a bit of a mistake. My bathroom ones placed so that I can't reach the touch controls, and when in the bathroom you're in the shower, or have a toothbrush in your hands etc., so voice control is really helpful. Would have liked to switch them out for something a little bass heavier with stereo in one speaker, but alas, no luck with these new fives.

The Five isn’t really designed for bathroom use, but if you’d like something with a bigger sound than a Sonos One, the Move would be a great choice for bathrooms. It’s more water resistant and as a bonus, you can listen on the go if you want.

Hi to everybody. Sometimes speed bump it’s due to new electronic components and cpu on the market that substitute the old ones. IMHO the five it’s one of the finest loudspeaker you can find on the market and i do not miss the lack of the microphone on it. I use two play:5 stereo paired to listen music, not to talk with them. I suppose the new Five will serve great for years, like my 2nd generation did (actually they are doing well even today...)

Cannot work out how to set up up a stereo pair of 2 x new Play 5's as front speakers in a 5.1 setup, using playbar, sub and 2 x play 1 as rears. Can't find anyway to set the 2 x 5's as front L&R and use playbar for speech, which is how a 5.1 system should be set-up?
I can only add 2 x 5's as fronts on their own, setting them up separately, when I pair them to the surround it sounds terrible. Says on Sonos Website that 5's are suitable for use as surround speakers? Help! Looks like they will be going back to Sonos!

5’s can only be used as surround rears, Sonos soundbars always handle the front three channels. 
 

So you cannot have a true 5.1 system then with sonos? That makes no sense. Because a playbar is seriously not up to the job in a large room. Surely that’s just a software change by sonos? Why would you add 2 x Sonos Five at the rear, have a decent sub  and just a ply bar at the front. Gives no true L & R separation. Looks like they are going back then. 
anyone want to buy a playbar, sub and two play 1’s?

IMHO Sonos is not striving for the best home theater setups, it is intended as a very good setup with ease of use and no hassle with too many cables.

If you want a really good home theater setup go for JBL Synthesis.

Thanks for the help and answers. I guess the problem here is that this is not fully explained as a limitation on the sonos website when ordering, I guess I’m not the first to suffer this. And actually there is no reason why it could not be achieved to make the system even better. That is only software required to do that. Same as creating a stereo pair is only software. Sonos should consider this as it is an improvement. 
might you could do this the system would move to another level and me truly awesome!

Unfortunately it looks like sonos is getting two new speakers back. 
and I will have to sell my playbar, sub and 2 x play 1’s which I have purchased in the last year with the view to doing this when I could afford it. The launch of the new 5’s was the incentive to do that. 

I have a Sonos 5 speaker.  This morning, it was totally dead.  It is plugged in but no light is on.  What do I do now?  How can it be repaired?

Your best bet would be to contact Sonos Support directly to discuss it.

I suggest the phone folks, they have more options available because they're on the phone with you, they are available Monday through Friday during business hours. The Twitter support folks are available 24/7.

I think that’s the case.  I have a stereo pair of 5’s and the sound quality is better than the Play 5.  Clearer and more detailed although not quite as warm.  I’ve seen others say the same.  Airplay is more reliable which makes sense since Airplay was added to the Play 5 later.  Given that it’s pretty likely the internals are too different to pair the old and new 5’s.  I was one of the naysayers earlier in this thread but was wrong.  Now I have another set of Fives on order.  My best speakers to date were Kef LS50W’s which are $2499 and the Fives give them a run for their money while being simpler and more reliable as the Kefs have had lots of reliability issues.

You actually have no idea if that is true or not.  

What is the latency on the new Fives’s like on the line in? Is it still the 70ms?

The software, which is why this occurs, hasn’t changed. 

Received 2 new Sonos Five speakers to replace my Play:5 Gen1s yesterday. I’m very impressed, and I don’t even have them in a stereo pair, or TruPlay tuned (Android guy, waiting for Apple friend to come visit). Warm/tight bass and a lovely wide/crisp soundstage. For the fun of it I did a side by side comparison with the Play:5 Gen1 and not surprisingly there is no comparison. Kudos Sonos!

Meanwhile, again for the fun of it/not that I need it, I’m wondering what a stereo pair of Fives and a Sub would sound like...

Stereo Fives are great, I have two pairs of them.  I don’t think a sub is necessary.  Look up Peter Pee’s videos on you tube and he compares them with and without a sub.  I almost want to turn down the bass on my stereo Five’s.

Yeah that’s what had me wondering what it would sound like as the bass depth on their own is already immense

I’ve almost wanted to turn down the bass some times.  But I can’t recommend the 5’s enough.  What a great speaker especially in stereo.
