Hey everyone! 👋

As some of you may have noticed earlier this week, Spotify lossless is now available on

compatible Sonos devices.

First, you need to enable lossless in the Spotify app. You can read how to do that here on Spotify's own page.

Once that is done, connect to a Sonos speaker and activate lossless by adjusting the audio quality, once you are connected to a speaker that will enable it, as seen in the GIF below.

You now have lossless on Sonos! Keep in mind, as shown in the GIF, you will have to skip to the next song before lossless is enabled.

Note: This setting is system wide. Once you have enabled it on one Sonos speaker, the rest will have lossless enabled as well.

Enjoy, and let us know what you think!

Mike H

Quick note since a few people asked. As long as your speakers are running the latests software version Spotify lossless is supported. If they are on S1, then it sadly isn't supported.

Great. Any reason I get 16 bit and not 24 bit no matter what I seem to play? Just curious. Using my Sonos Amp. (‘Tabsfri’ is ‘lossless’ in Danish😅)

Same here, got a play 1 and a connect. Using s1 app and spotify connect, but lossless stays grayed out..

Not sure your models will work with lossless?

Same here, I’m only seeing 16-bit.  I tested on newer tracks like Taylor Swifts new album (I’m not a swifty, figured her tracks would be the highest quality).

Can I get Lossless through the Sonos app rather than going right into the Spotify Connect interface? I am als only showing 16 bit. Weird.

@Saybadger, Yes.

Playing Spotify Lossless audio

Once Spotify Lossless has been enabled per the above steps, you can play lossless audio to Sonos via the Sonos app or Spotify Connect.

Sonos app for iOS or Android

  1. Open the Sonos app for iOS or Android.
  2. Begin playing Spotify content via browse or search.
  3. Tap the Now Playing bar to expand. A "Lossless" badge will appear below the track title when playing lossless content.

Thanks Smilja. That now works. Not really sure which interface is generally accepted as better but when I go through Spotify I sometimes have connection issues to one of my speakers, so I use Sonos app. Thank you again.

@Saybadger, Spotify Connect Lossless will drain your mobile data rather quickly (approx. 1 GB per hour of usage).

Still not able to play 24-bit. Anyone who found a Spotify song streaming in 24-bit?

@Kos, fellow Dane here. I think I responded to your question on Reddit, at least the screenshot looks similar.

It all depends on the song, some are in 16-bit, others in 24-bit. Some very old songs might not even be in lossless if they were never upmixed, but I haven’t seen many, if any, while I’ve been testing it. I noticed the same when it comes to Atmos, as a lot of Danish songs were never mixed in it.

In short your mileage may vary.

@Saybadger, we pushed a patch out last week that should have resolved issues connecting via Spotify, where it would be showing as connecting, but there wouldn’t be any audio playing from the speaker. If you have updated the system but are still experiencing it, then I would reach out to the support team for them to have a look at your system.

Okay - thanks - but it would be nice with ONE track in 24-bit to see it actually work thru Sonos… any tracks you can recommend? :)

No it won’t. Spotify Connect does not use mobile data for streaming on Sonos.

Still not able to play 24-bit. Anyone who found a Spotify song streaming in 24-bit?

The video/gif in the initial post shows an example.

haha - stupid me. Will try that… ‘Cherry Wine’ (whatever it is). And Sonos Support mentions Kina Grannis’ All I want

It helps if you know how Spotify Connect works. You clearly don’t.

If you start a Spotify Connect session on Sonos, it will use the network associated with Sonos, not the mobile data.

You can turn your mobile off and the music will continue.

Same here, got a play 1 and a connect. Using s1 app and spotify connect, but lossless stays grayed out..

Not sure your models will work with lossless?

Ive been trying to find out if this is the case or not, but i cannot find information about support for my devices. Do any1 of you know, or is there some official statement coming about this?

S1 features are frozen, so I wouldn’t expect Spotify Lossless to be available on an S1 system.

I just tested it. You're correct. That's probably why it's called "Sonos Direct Control", with third-party apps also functioning exclusively as remote controls rather than as media players. Interesting. Today I learned something new again. 🤗

That’s the benefit Spotify Connect has over Airplay. It doesn’t rely on the mobile device, so no battery drain or mobile data usage.

Finally got to stream 24-bit … using the song in Sonos’ gif🤪 Have not found any other yet.

Hi @Woody78

Welcome to the Sonos Community!

The following requirements are in place for streaming Spotify Lossless to Sonos:

  • Spotify Lossless is supported on S2 Sonos systems running iOS 80.30.35/Android 80.30.31 and Player (firmware) version 91.0-70011 or greater.
  • Spotify Lossless is not supported on the Sonos S1 Controller app, or on products that only support S1 (such as Connect, Connect:Amp, or Play:5).

From this, it seems that you would only be able to get Spotify Lossless on S1 speakers via Spotify Connect in the Spotify app, and only on speaker models that are capable of being on S2. So, a Play:1, a Play:3, a Sonos One, an Amp or a Playbar, as a few examples.

I presume that if you then group-in an unsupported player, the stream would switch to lossy.

I hope this helps.

@Corry P

Yes… that really helps! 😎😉
