The word β€œcombine” is confusing in the Sonos universe. If you β€œbond” them as surrounds (so they are in the same β€œroom” in the Sonos app) they loseΒ bluetooth -Β just like the portable surrounds do.

If you would β€œgroup” the Eras (when the Era’s and the soundbar are in two β€œrooms” in the Sonos app) the bluetooth functionality is retained.

Fantastic breakdown! Thank you for sharing. What is your overall impression of the side firing tweeters when comparing the soundstage for beam ultra versus Beam GenΒ 2?Β

When I started testing, it was just the Beam Ultra by itself, before eventually testing other configurations (surrounds, Sub, Sub Mini, portable surrounds, etc).

I’m not sure if I just happened to have it in the perfect space at the time (walls not too far away, close enough to bounce sound off of), but the side firing tweeters really had me thinking that I already had surrounds, right out of the box. It kinda threw me for a loop, actually, about whether or not I even needed dedicated surrounds.

Spoiler...it still sounds better with dedicated surrounds. But it’s pretty, pretty good without them.

I can see it both ways.

For my use case, the majority of the time I currently have portables as a stereo pair for music listening, therefore, I would still want them to be a stereo pair when not being used as surrounds. I’m unlikely to just pick one up and change location, I would move both.

However, I can see the feature would be beneficial for users where their portables are currently being used as stand-alone devices in different rooms, as that is their existing use case.

Β

Well put, I’m right there with you. I’ll keep an eye out for more feedback like this, if enough people would use it in a similar way (grabbing both portables the majority of the time) I can bring that back to the team for reconsideration. Appreciate your thoughts here.

@Atom PΒ

Great breakdown of all the new exciting β€œStuff” baked into the Beam Ultra. Impressive to say the least. I have two (2) questions:

  • How does it produce the β€œ.1” if there is no outboard Sub. My understanding there was no β€œSound Motion” involved as with the Arc Ultra. I’m not complaining mind you...just β€œnerding outβ€Β πŸ˜‚
  • How does Sonos define Wi-Fi 6 compatibility?Β For example my Apple products likΒ iPhone 17 Pro MaxΒ and iPad 2025 13 inch actually use the 6Ghz band. So with the Beam Ultra is Sonos saying that it can play in a fast WiFi 6 environment that provides more lanes (i.e. MIMO) or does it actually connect to the 6Ghz band?

My thanks in advance for your reply!

Β

  • The .1 is a combination of the 4 woofers and some DSP. Not quite the same level as a separate Sub or Sub Mini, but still a noticeable improvement over Beam.
  • As others pointed out - it’s easy to mix WiFi 6 and 6 GHz (which is part of WiFi 6E and later). I’ve done it quite a few times myself, the nomenclature is confusing. No changes on the 6 GHz band here, but you still get the benefits of WiFi 6.

I want to be fairly clear, as I understand it. When Sonos says β€˜Portables’ for surrounds, they mean the Play (not the PLAY:1) or the Move 2. They do not mean either generation of the Roam. Not sure why β€˜Portables’ is the chosen language, but I hope to head off some number of β€˜but my Roams aren’t working!’.

That’s a fair call out. β€œPortables” is the category of products that did not support surround sound audio at all previously.Β Play:1 isn’t considered a portable, so hopefully there’s not much confusion there.

But you’re right that not all portables are supported. Roam (both versions) and Move 1 (which could only be in WiFi or Bluetooth mode, not both at once like later products) don’t meet the hardware requirements for this to work reliably.

It has subsequently been confirmed that Alexa will not be an available voice assistant at launch. Given most users would assume Alexa would be available, I would have thought that omission would have been mentioned in the honest limitations.

Also a fair point. I was thinking more along the lines of β€œlong-term limitations”, but including the temporary absence of Alexa would make sense there. Feedback received, I’ll keep that in mind for future posts.

If I have two Sonos Era 100 speakers and combine them with a Sonos Beam Ultra soundbar, will I lose the ability to use Bluetooth?

Β

The Beam Ultra supports Bluetooth, so you would be connecting via Bluetooth to the Beam Ultra.Β  Bluetooth on Era speakers is disabled when used as surrounds, so if you used EraΒ speakers as surrounds with a unit which doesn't support Bluetooth (Arc, Beam 1 or 2, Amp), you would not be able to connect via Bluetooth.

Thanks for the replies! It's great that the Ultra and two Era 100 speakers will play music via Bluetooth.

Take a picture of the serial number and PIN.

If you don't, remember "I told you" as you are digging them out.

Actually Sonos should put that in the setup instructions.Β

Or include a little printed card.Β

Can a pair of PLAY or MOVE 2 be carried to multiple Rooms and used as surrounds? This would be handy for temporary surrounds for a patio TV.

@Atom PΒ

Unfortunately, there is a lot of confusion between the PLAY:1 and the Play. At least here in the forums. I certainly agree, they’re extremely different.

Names....Β  Arrrggghhhh!!!!

Ever try searching for a Play answer and had to dig through so many 1, 3, 5 results that didn't help?

Try: (from my clipboard)

Sonos play -"play 1" -"play 3" -"play 5" -"play one" -"play five"Β -"play:1" -"play:3" -"play:5"

Note that the - / exclude option doesn't apply to sponsored results.

You'll still see many, many results for the word "play" but at least things will be better.Β
