The latest on the Sonos App from Nick Millington

Update: December 10, 2024

This is Nick Millington, Chief Innovation Officer, with another update on the Sonos app.

Over the past several weeks, we have been beta testing several features and fixes, with a particular focus on improving system setup and the reliability of adding new products, volume control and responsiveness, and Local Music Library search, sharing and stability.

Our latest release, now available, includes improved music playback error handling as well as several fixes specifically for Android users: Group volume improvements, Album art for music library and support for users moving between multiple systems.

As we enter the New Year, we will continue our cadence of major and minor releases, focusing in particular on restoring Playlist Editing and Snooze Alarms, plus improvements to Local Music Library and overall responsiveness. We acknowledge that even as we have rolled out improvements to group volume, some customers continue to face issues with volume control as a result of connectivity issues between certain players and the app. We are committed to making significant improvements here in our upcoming updates. Likewise, we know our work is not yet done when it comes to improving usability of Local Music Library, and have heard your feedback around requests such as returning A-Z scrolling and improving queue management. We will provide further updates on this as soon as we are able.

As always, you can also view detailed updates on each new release, including today’s release as well as previous ones, on our Release Notes page.

After s rough ride installing this update it now appears stable. The update issue could be due to my internet provider having issues.

i can report that so far ALL local media album art works. This is a vast improvement on previous version.

Thank you

Not so fast… On my IOS the queue is broken.  See my topic on 18.14.07- Queue is broken.

I confirm that album art is back on local library.

Volume control seems more responsive as well

Still Radio icon disappears when the radio starts playing (and comes back when on pause...)

(This is on Android)

So far, it’s going into the right direction.

Installed the new APP (ios) and updated firmware on speakers.  That was the quickest firmware update I have ever experienced.

“As we enter the New Year, we will continue our cadence of...focusing in particular on restoring Playlist Editing and Snooze Alarms, plus improvements to Local Music Library and overall responsiveness.”

No - focus on the products connecting correctly.  All of the other stuff doesn’t matter if the connection is always unstable.  Many of these connectivity issues existed before you guys totally screwed up the app - make it work before you worry about playlists and artwork populating correctly.

$3,000 in and I still can’t AirPlay my iPhone music to my system without half of the system not working.  We’ve got SONOS speakers in every room and half the rooms won’t work when we try to AirPlay music even though everything is on the same WiFi - so who cares about snooze alarms and artwork.

“As we enter the New Year, we will continue our cadence of...focusing in particular on restoring Playlist Editing and Snooze Alarms, plus improvements to Local Music Library and overall responsiveness.”

Can I put a bit in for those of us who are currently unable to play our music from our music libraries using mobile IOS devices.  The library is set up fine and is recognised, and can be accessed from a Windows desktop computer, but the “Your Sources” menu option either does not show, or does not contain “Music Library”

7 months and counting...

Persevered for 30 mins to see if the updates - system and app - settled down.

Then discovered art was back on library, but still no complete Sonos Playlist (A - D then it stops). No hd/hires banners, can't add downloads/burns recently added to NAS to queue... enough...

and back to Windows... again.

Android app is still unstable in my view:

Specifically, I constantly see either “There are no connected products” or “No products found” messages when I access the app.  One of these two messages will always appear when I access the app after the phone times out.

Also, no album art for AccuRadio music service.  This is one of the music services you can download directly from the Sonos app.  No radio station logo (icon) is displayed while the station is playing.  It will appear when the music is stopped.

None of these problems occur with the Windows laptop controller.  You should make the app more like the laptop controllers.

Android app has an issue loading m3u playlists causing replication in the queue.

I have found that:

* Request a playlist of > 99 tracks and the error manifests replicating to huge totals

* Replication appears to be limited but figures vary - a 100 track playlist replicates 475 times to a total of 47,500 queued tracks. A 101 track playlist replicates to 47,571 which is 471 times so there is a pattern/limit there somewhere...

However:

* Request a playlist of < 100 tracks and all is fine with no replication

* It does not make a difference if some of the referenced files do not exist

* Request a large playlist (>99) from the desktop controller and there is no replication

So it would seem that the Sonos bug relates to a playlist track count of > 99 causing a load loop.

Have upgraded to the latest version of the app and still it is failing miserably. The only way I can access songs from my music library is via the PC desktop app. The music library either goes missing from my Android phone app, or when it does appear gives the useful message “something has gone wrong” when trying to find music in the library.

This has been broken for too long now and is totally unacceptable. I don’t care about support for new Sonos products or headphones. I just want an app that will work with my existing products and one that gives me back the full functionality I had prior to the May 2024 app update.

You cannot even sell your old products because no one wants them whilst there is not a fully working, fully functioning app.

Hey Nick Millington
This is nice but when are you going to deliver the promised TrueCinema functionality for the Ace? It's now 5 months after the initial promisee delivery date. Or fess up that you're abandoning the idea.

Great, as an Android user, to get my Album Art back!  Not only is it back, but I think the Library probably scrolls quicker than it did under the old app, so good work by the developers. Thanks, guys.

However, things are still not quite there yet.

Where Songs within an Album have different Album Art (so this is another angle on the old compilation albums issue), the Art shown in the Library listing is not the Folder.jpg you would expect it to be.  Neither is it the Art from Track 1 of the album, which would be the logical second option.

What shows up is the Art from the Song whose Artist’s name comes first in alphabetical order within the Album!

This makes no sense at all, but can probably be sorted out pretty easily in the code.  Any bets on how long it might take?

So just to be sure I understand what remains unresolved:

— creating new playlists and editing existing playlists in the Sonos app

— sluggish volume control

— queue display defaults to start of the queue and not the track currently playing

— app occasionally displays first track played during a listening session and does not advance the display as subsequent tracks in the queue are played.

And as far as I can tell the latest word from Sonos is these will remain unresolved on and after January 1, 2025. Is that an accurate summary of the current status?

Is this a joke or April 1st. App is s***!

Any news on widgets or lock screen controls for Android? These are basic features that every other media app has, and the Sonos app had for a decade before it was broken.

Sorry for the stupid question but is it possible to download the app update if I don't have my speakers connected?

Sorry for the stupid question but is it possible to download the app update if I don't have my speakers connected?

I think that should be possible but obviously this will not cause the firmware of the speakers to be updated and that is an important part of the latest update.

As of very recently (maybe this version) I’m no longer able to manage the queue in the Sonos app if I’m playing something from Spotify. This is one of the primary ways we used the Sonos app, especially to have multiple people in the household queue up songs.

Is this an intentional change? Or maybe a bug?

I have a large local library on a Synology NAS.  My library of over 100K songs runs over the Sonos limit of 65K.

It would be great to have a random play feature that could play a random playlist from the entire library in limited chunks, such as “Random 50”, “Random 100”, “Random 500” etc.

Any hope for a feature like that?

As I understand it Sonos can’t index over 65k. So how would they find the non-indexed items?

Latest release not working on iPad and iPhone. Please get your s*** together Sonos.

Here’s how the next release notes should read:

80.17.09 (Android)
80.14.08 (iOS)

Release date: ASAP

In this update:

We focused on the core of Sonos’ products and why you spent thousands of your hard-earned dollars: playing the same music, at the same time, on multiple speakers, consistently.

  • The speakers you pick will all play music now
  • Music plays at the same time from all the speakers you chose
  • Music plays consistently until you stop it

-------------------------------------------------

That’s really all it needs to say. Work on that. Then worry about ad-supported TV and wireless holographic headphones and ad-supported radio stations we don’t listen to anyway. Mick Jones had it right when he said, “Just Play Music!”

First time post, long time user, and increasingly long-time sufferer of this latest app incarnation.

I think some of the following issues are mentioned elsewhere, but I am still seeing these issues with the Android app:

  • When I go to Sonos Favourites/Playlists/View All I can only see the first 70 playlists
  • When I use the search to look for an album in my Music Library, it returns all of the songs on the album rather than the album itself, i.e. to play the album I would need to individually add every song to the queue rather than just the album
  • When I go to my Music Library and select Folders, then locate an album to play, the three dots (...) option does not allow me to add the album or any of the individual songs to the current queue
  • When I play any track and keep the app in playing view (so you can see the album art), switch to a different app on my phone for more than a few seconds and then switch back to the Sonos app, it is no longer in playing view, and briefly says cannot find system before showing the home screen rather than the playing view
  • When I click on the volume bar and have multiple speakers in a group I can no longer select the volume for individual speakers in a group
  • I can no longer edit or create playlists
  • No longer have any widgets on Android

Really appalled by all of this. Not that it’s a factor, but having been singing Sonos praises to friends and family, all I seem to do now is apologise to my girlfriend for lumbering her with a music system that refuses to work!

What right does Sonos have to confront me with advertising for non-commercial streams that I had to enter into InTunes myself due to a lack of alternatives?

I feel I've been taken for a ride and sold by Sonos and expect to be able as quickly as possible to add my own streams in the controller, which I can simply listen to without adverts.
