Our current tv is a 82 inch Sony OLED  and within a few years it  will grow to approx 100 inch and not necessarily a Sony.

Our current sonos  eArc sound bar plus a sub, which obviously does not give much left/right separation relative to the screen width. It will be even  more inadequate when ever the 100inch arrives, maybe in two 2 years time.

We are prepared to spend a few $k to upgrade the existing TV to add 2x rear speakers and 2x  additional front side speakers, is this technically feasible? Could this arrangement work with larger TV.

The goal is to improve immersive  quality now (with rear speakers and improved stereo front separation)  and  so have the audio setup established for when the larger TV arrives.

We are also prepared to scrap  Sonos (ekk)  and start from scratch when the larger TV arrives, but are hoping there is a reasonable Sonos solution that will bridge both TVs.

You could consider this is a home theatre setup as the room is dedicated to chilling and  the tv, it is somewhat open to a living kitchen dining area and has two walls with large windows. Whacking a gazillion amps into speakers is not part of the family culture (sigh).

Current viewing distance is 3 meters, which will remain for the 100 inch. It is 3 meters behind couch to the  rear wall.

I'm not convinced that any hi tech built in tv  speakers can be relied upon for separation, ie the tech that identifies the position of action/voice  on screen and directs sound from that section of the screen.

Cheers!

Sonos doesn’t do “additional front side speakers”. You could use a Sonos Amp with passive speakers just for music to achieve the stereo separation you’re after for music. The Amp could be grouped with the Arc, but would lag behind 70ms with TV sound.

Lots of us are hoping and waiting for a Sonos home theatre system with independent front left, centre and front right speakers… Who (apart from secretive Sonos staff) knows if/when they’re due for release?

At this point in time you need to look at a AV receiver and speaker package. If you still wanted Sonos you could always add the Port to the AV receiver.

Edit

Wanted to expand on this as an AV Receiver is just a one box and not alway very big, adding a discrete speaker package (UK Mointor Audio MASS) would blend in well and just as small, if not smaller than the Era 100. Also running a thin speaker cable to surround is often easier than providing power to rears. Hot glue gun speaker cable along skirting / baseboard or around door frames etc and no one notices.

As a class of device, soundbars trade ultimate sound experience with convenience.

Yup… 5 Era 300s would kick butt.  Sonos… I’ll buy 3 more if you make 5.1(2) possible with 300s.  Or even the soundbar as a center speaker with 300 L-R.

You could sell me an Amp if it also had an adjustable volume (in relation to the right and left) center channel output.

Spouse would rather have something soundbar shaped but with side speakers that could be pushed out to the TV’s edge.

Both of us would go for what we had with our old Phillips TV, the speakers ran up the right and left side of the screen. Really great separation and it filled in the center nicely.

Thanks for replies!

With the improved affordability of very large screen sizes I hope there is a solution in the future.

To be crystal clear, 2 Eras at front, 2 at rear and using existing sound bar are incompatible?

2 Era 300 for rear would seem a reasonable bet with the existing sound bar and room size?

Correct: incompatible, and correct: Era 300’s 😜

Thanks!
