First of all, I have been doing some research but I did not find any answer that satisfied me, if there are any similar questions I apologize.

I have a Beam and two One’s in surround. My problem is that I have a Wii U, which transmits audio in Dolby Pro Logic II, however, the Sonos app only shows PCM Stereo, the Wii U is connected directly to the TV via HDMI and the Beam by ARC.

The first question is: does the Beam supports Pro Logic II?

I have tried to change the input of my TV to Bitstream and it removes all the sound from the back, but when I switch to PCM, I have sound back, but however, I do not know if it is “fake” surround or is it really working in Pro Logic II, since the app only shows PCM Stereo.

Is it in Pro Logic but by the nature of Pro Logic, the Sonos app shows me that is Stereo?

I would like to add that the Wii U is not compatible with Dolby, however, they released an update where the original Wii games (which are the ones I play) will work with Dolby, so I do not know if it is getting the Dolby signal trough PCM or some other trick

This Wii U article is helpful:

  • Not all games support surround sound.
  • While the Wii U supports surround sound, if the system is being used in an application/game that does not support surround sound, the system will default to stereo sound.
  • The Wii U uses six-channel linear PCM audio output.
  • With a recent system update, support for Dolby Pro Logic II was added. Use of this format is only available in Wii Mode.

The Beam doesn’t support multichannel LPCM, so all Wii U games will play as stereo PCM.

Dolby Pro Logic II converts 2.0 stereo to 5.1 channel surround sound. Since the Beam already converts stereo to a simulated surround sound, I don’t believe the Beam supports Pro Logic II, but I am not 100% certain.

From Sonos:

If the source you’re playing isn’t in 5.1 already, your Sonos home theater speakers will perform an audio up-mix of the stereo signal to create a simulated surround sound. This means you’ll still hear most audio out of the front channels, but the rear left and right speakers will play what we determine to be ambient audio. This is most obvious in action scenes and with movies that have intense soundtracks.

Well, I’m pretty sure that the game that I’m playing has Pro Logic II. Now that i remember, i had a Sony HT-RT5 and it showed that it was playing Pro Logic from the Wii U

From my experience with the Panasonic blu-ray players it seems likely Sonos started looking at the pro logic info in the stereo output when they updated PCM support for the arc. You might want to check if you need to bump up the surround volume when using the wii for a better surround experience.

The Wii gets a mention on the Dolby Pro logic wiki page.
