So, you're dumping your Sonos devices... What alternatives are there?

(OR. Install LMS - LYRION MUSIC SERVER - and keep your existing speakers as LMS endpoint players)

I will be getting a WiiM amp and a pair of Dali Oberon 5 floorstanding speakers

I will replace my HT setup eventually but any Sonos speakers remaining will be kept on S2 and 16.1.1 while they are in my house 😊

As long as you have Sonos kit with line in jacks, there are options galore for using it as essentially dumb but good sounding - even HiFi quality - kit with long service life.

The Wiim devices are excellent value.  Their app is good too 👍😁

Eversolo also looks very good. Expensive, but there may be corresponding value.

You can use any Sonos device with LMS 😊🎶

Wirelessly? No proprietary protocols come in the way?

Wireless - all done via upnp bridge plugin (or airplay)

Here's an IKEA Frame speaker playing Radio Paradise:

To be honest guys I am done with this firm and from what I am reading the software isn’t beta it’s alpha release so many issues so much functionality missing and not coming for months

shame I bought into this system as a final no need to get new audio or video sound devices

There are Bluesound speakers - not cheap, and are covered in that soft-touch plastic that goes sticky after a couple of years😝

I use this at times:  xiaomi mi smart speaker (40 euros) with chromecast.  Also works with LMS.  Decent sound for a smaller room.

I remain content with my Echo Shows wired to Sonos line in jacks. Works like a charm, every time. Only, no NAS.

What I don't get is all this mucking around with what is essentially what a remote is for the telly! Just to change things around? These are just home audio systems, not cutting edge things like rocket ships. What a colossal waste all around.

Definitely dumping every piece of Sonos equipment it's unfortunate that it works so terribly I would almost feel bad trying to even sell to somebody else at such a piece of junk. They can't even do the simples of things correct How is this company been still in business. At this point I would make my own speaker out of scratch before I ever buy or let anyone I know even attempt to buy a Sonos product

For a user that has all their music on a NAS and doesn't subscribe to music services I (like many others) won't be buying anymore Sonos products. I'm seriously considering whether to sell my 6x Sonos Ones and my Roam as this new app makes finding and playing my music a chore.

NAS customers are now second-class Sonos users.

If you have any Sonos shares I would also consider selling them!

Naim muso 2 and muso qb 2 - expensive but reviewed as excellent sound.

The ideal situation would be to switch to a speaker system that is NOT proprietary and does not use proprietary technology standards so we are not "locked in" to a specific company. This was why the IBM PC model is great, interoperability is king!

I encourage Sonos to open source their software app as I believe the community could help create a better app for their users.

Excellent hardware - atrocious software

Bluesound

Gets good reviews, and is a parity product line to Sonos, yet seems to be little known. I’m sticking with Sonos, because it’s simply easier and at the end of the day, even with this S2 update wonkyness, I can always get my system to work as expected. Just have to manually monkey around with it.

Sonos isn’t a software company (why give me a new desktop app. in the update - with no EQ controls? The old gold icon application on IOS, which still works, has settings functionality), we all know this and have since the update fiasco of a few years ago. Act accordingly with your updates.

Excellent hardware - atrocious software

There is a solution that is in the interest of all users and against the interests of most makers. Unbundle the smart front end from the amplification+speakers such that buyers can choose any smart front end to wire connect to any good speaker system. Such a smart end will not need much hardware and can be small and cheap. And can then be upgraded with a new state of the art smart unit maybe every three years, without having to throw away the downstream electronics as well. The wire connection needs no invention of a common standard - RCA cables will serve once both sides work with analog signals.

An application of the above thinking in a photo at the end of this thread:

This is what I did in 2020, being a believer in the “fool me once...” bit of teaching!

Not one device from Sonos has been dumped; but a need to use the Sonos app has.

I hope it will not - but I got 3 years guarantee on the one I have bought, so maybe, if it happens, it can be fixed.
