The end of the ‘old’ Tunein has terminated the custom radio stream for a too long time already. There is a very cumbersome way to get it back, but it requires far too many steps and the custom links are sent to the favortires where they cannot be edited.
The feature still exists in the Windows App but it is useless.
I went to Sonos because of this feature and I’m not the only one in this case.
So, WHEN WILL YOU HAVE AN ELEGANT SOLUTION to the infuriating lack of this feature???

Custom radio stations have been broken for 8 months since Sonos forced the new app on everyone.
Whenever I consider buying a new Move2 for the backyard, I remember you guys still haven’t fixed custom stations since the Ace fiasco.
I need the ability to add a custom streaming URL to Sonos, whether it’s through TuneIn or as a first-party feature. This is BASIC stuff I shouldn’t need to beg to be restored on a $2000 speaker system.
+18The feature was lost with the end of old tuneIn support on Sonos. And the new tuneIn service does not support custom stations via Sonos.
So the only way would be to add custom stations directly to Sonos own Sonos Radio service. At the moment there still are some features to fix / bring back to S2 that already worked on old S2.
I think after S2 has come back to the old status, Sonos will start to bring new features to the system.
There is a painfull solution to the actual shortcoming regarding custom URL. This was detailed in a post you should find here :
It works, somehow … And furthermore, there are some more problem when listening a custom URL I have also experienced:

We are still far away from the ideal solution we had in the old application.
So, Sonos, keep improving. We will be thankfull to ‘find’ this feature anew.
I understand that custom radio is still not available, but it seems to tell me when I try to add a station for the 2nd, 3rd, etc time that it’s already in “My Radio Stations” but this doesn’t even exist. If it does, it’s cleverly hidden.
Very disappointing that the new SONOS app does not allow the addition of new radio stations.
It will become a typical business school case on how a company which dominated a given market lost it all because of a bad business decision !

I’ll just add ‘Errare humanum est, perseverare diabolicum’ to the post. Sonos is the sole artisan of its fall by making the update irreversible since they presumably have also updated the speaker firmware. It would have been so easy to roll back before it was too late.
Furthermore, the new application is all but easy to use. You never know what you are doing, and you must almost rely on your luck to listen to what you want. It’s a very sad story.
And none of the problem reported in that post are solved so far.

+18You mean “after about 10 minutes the playback stops intermittently for a half-second or so. I don’t know whether it has to do with buffering, playback speed or the skipping? Not sure that this is a widespread issue, with only one user reporting it. Have you tried adding a radiostation this way.
I precisely added a couple of custom radio stations. And it’s not a couple of seconds but it stops completely, and one cannot play it again before at least a couple of minutes if not hours.
I’ve not yet wiresharked the whole thing but it seems that the stream is going through the TuneIn infrastructure. Once again, I’m not sure. The same stream is working perfectly when I use the application on my smartphone (I’m talking about rockradio dot com).
So, the network is not the problem. These problems began since the new app …

Good question: I use TuneIn exclusively to listen to my custom streams. This explains why I’m so infuriated by all the changes made since last year.
The custom radio was THE reason I came to buy the expensive Sonos stuff. I have absolutely no interest in Spotify or similar since they don’t have ‘real’ radios. It’s only a question of playlist and I don’t like this since you tend to listen only to music you already know.
I’ll give TuneIn a try though to find it I experience also the hiccups I have wich rockradio dot com.

The same with Sonos Radio, although a little less frequently and a little less long. Same with TuneIn.
What surprises me is that this is not the case with the apps on my tablet.
This shows 2 things in my opinion. This shows 2 things in my opinion. The problem is not in the network in the vast majority of the cases reported and there are always bugs that are not fixed in the Sonos software AND firmware.
+18Sorry, but I don’t agree completely.
First let’s say that the dropouts don’t seem to depend on playing custom urls, because other TuneIn stations and also other services (Sonos Radio) are affected.
The dropouts imo are caused by the service itself or by network infrastructure. The service, in your case TuneIn, uses different interfaces for Sonos and for example client apps on your phone, tab or computer. So there could be everything fine with the smartphone app but not with Sonos.
But mostly there are issues like interference on the wifi causing dropouts or stopping streams. If there would be a general problem with Sonos, many usere would have reported about this.
I strongly recommend sending a diagnostic and calling Sonos support to check it.
I fear that I must disagree as well. I’m using the app on the exact same network. Every room of my house has a Wi-Fi access point. The levels are carefully set up to make sure that a particular Wi-Fi device is connected to the right access point. I’ve checked it right now and it’s the case.
Roaming could be a problem, and I have checked this point also. Only my tablet and smartphone are disconnecting and reconnecting to Wi-Fi network when I go from place to place in my flat.
So, in a sense, I can be pretty sure that the problems lie within Sonos. I also tried to change the speaker I mostly use. Same problem. One cannot rule totally out that the 2 speakers have the same issue. But every speaker in my house experiences the dropouts.
Last but not the least, I tried to call Sonos support. I guess I had a first level ‘engineer’ which was beginning the same day. All the answer I had that day was wait until the next upgrade’. The support so far was totally useless in my case.
+18That sounds like a bad cs experience. Sorry to hear that… I just can recommend to call again and ask for level 2 escalation. At least support should take a look at some diagnostics you send. Be aware that you note the diag numbers.
Btw. is your Sonos system on wifi completely or is at least one device connected via lan cable to the router so that your probably are using SonosNet? And are you experiencing the drops also playing music on a single speaker or just if you are grouping two or more rooms?
What kind exactly is your network system? Manufacturer, model… is there only one DHCP Server running? APs shouldn’t do that.
Sorry, but there are many things to consider.
Every single speaker is connected through the WiFi network only. My AP are from ZyXEL and are controlled by an ATP 200 firewall which acts as a WiFi controller as well. So, the network is consistent everywhere in the home since the WiFi radio settings are deployed using the same profile on each AP. Every speaker is connected with a level of at least -51dBm or better.
I’m in the network business for more than 30 years now although more oriented on voice rather than data. In that case we can even say that we should be more voice oriented since the throughput and the priority issues are kind of the same nature.
Unless I don’t see the elephant in the hallway, I can reasonably be sure that the problem lies with Sonos rather than on the network.
I would be very glad to know how I can access the 2nd level support. My first encounter with support was alas far below than 1st level.
And yes, there is only 1 DHCP server on the network.
+18Ok, I‘m not familiar with your hardware and firewall settings. So I‘m sorry I can’t give any advice on this. Maybe someone else here can help.
Regarding to the support issue I recommend calling again and directly asking for escalating of your first contact case, because there was no helpful information.
btw, do you know of a publication that summarizes everything there is to know about network operation by Sonos?

Not everything works since Sonos deleted a couple of commands. It’s still usefull as long as there is a description of the IP protocols and ports used by the speakers.
