Can't add folder to music library (913)

I have only the SMB v1 on my desktop PC, which I unchecked.  How does one put SMB v2 on one’s computer?  Download it and from where?

Sonos is completely unhelpful.  I haven’t phoned them in 2-3 months.  Googling various threads has not led to any sort of working solution.

I have Windows 11 on a Dell XPS 8930 desktop.  I’ve already disabled SMB v1 but there is no option to enable SMB v2.

I tried but I get the response “false.”  My Windows 11 is up-to-date.

Hi @User966103, as shown in the article above to enable SMBv2 …

• open PowerShell as Administrator
• type (without quotes) “Set-SmbServerConfiguration –EnableSMB2Protocol $true”

I get “invalid argument” as a response when I typed in the above.

I tried to update my Powershell but the instructions are complicated and confusing to a layman such as myself.

Hi @User966103, no need to update PowerShell, just ignore that message.

Try cutting-and-pasting the command below into PowerShell (as Administrator) …

Set-SmbServerConfiguration -EnableSMB2Protocol $true

… I’ve replaced the mdash character with a regular dash and confirmed that it works. When you paste that command the first part will appear yellow, the middle part will appear gray, and the last part will appear green.

I copied and pasted the command and I do get the yellow gray and green command.  It then asks me to confirm and I type in “Y,” but nothing then happens.

Yes, it is saying “true.”  It appears that I can connect and now add my Music Library (on my PC’s hard drive) to my Sonos system.  This has taken 4-5 months to figure out.  I stumbled onto it.  I’m hoping this really DOES it.  I’m keeping my fingers crossed, after so many aborted attempts.

Thank you so much for your suggestions and taking the time to reply.  I could never have done it otherwise.  I’ve written on dozens of Sonos Forum threads about my situation--to no avail, until now.

After a few hours, now again I’m getting the same error (913), unable to add the shared music library to Sonos.

I got 913 error too but this worked for me (from desktop):

1. Right click your music library folder

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​2  Select “Give access to” and “Specific people”

3 Type “Sonos” in the search box and the dropdown will show “Sonos Wireless HiFi System”

4 Select it and click “add”

It will take a few minutes but should add it and be available on all you devices.

Writing this Dec. 2024. Anybody know if the 913 Mac issue has been fixed?

If maybe worth searching the community for "error 913” too and see the solutions that others have posted in recent months.

If still no joy with the things mentioned, then it maybe best to reproduce the issue(s) seen and immediately submit a Sonos system diagnostic report from within the Sonos App, note it’s reference and contact/chat with Sonos Support Staff via this LINK and see what the Staff can perhaps suggest to help you to resolve the matter.

I have recently moved to a Windows 11 laptop and cannot add my music library, which is on a WD Elements USB external drive, to my Sonos system. I have run the Share process and have also checked that SMB is disabled in the Windows features, but still get the 913 error.

I am beginning to think that this issue is more to do with the age of my external drive, as i bought it over 8 years ago. Should I buy something newer, or would using iCloud be a better option?

The 913 error usually indicates you are using the wrong sharing protocol, probably HTTP I would guess🤔 - try the third (NAS option) in the Windows Sonos controller and setup the share that way using the UNC path and whatever user account credentials you assigned to the share, which ideally just need to provide read-only access.

Thanks for the information. I’ve tried the NAS option and tht doesn’t work. The path I specify isn’t recognised.

I have also done all of the sharing options and it just keeps returning the 913 error when i try to add my music library. Will have to look at the cloud option, or purchase a newer NAS drive rather than the USB connected drive I currently have.

My folders are on a USB stick hosted through a SMB2-capable router (RT-AC68U), and I too cannot add some folders.  Sometimes I am able to add subfolders within the main folder, which obviously have a smaller number of files, but I have to add each folder one-at-a-time and Sonos has a 16 folder limit.  One of my Play:1’s is directly wired into the router.

No problem pulling up the folders on a laptop, and even an iPhone (e.g. VLC connecting to SAMBA server)

I am 99.99999999% certain that they have accidentally killed this functionality and have no idea how to fix it. I have tried absolutely every suggested solution, on multiple Macs as well as an iPhone. 

I bought into the Sonos ecosystem eight years ago because it had such a smooth UX. Every new update has degraded my experience to the point that I will not be buying any new Sonos products until I see a genuine attempt to put things right.

And I’m 99.9999999% certain they haven’t killed this functionality, because I and many others have had access to our music library for months.  Others lost it due to the dropping of HTTP/SMB v1 sharing, but regained access after reconfiguring their share and re-adding the library.

It was not done accidentally - the dropping of SMBv1 & HTTP shares is ‘by design’ due to their widely publicised sharing vulnerabilities - The 913 error is an indication of the wrong sharing protocol is in use. The shared library needs to be via SMBv2 or higher.

Sonos did mention this change even before the new Sonos App update - see attached which is from an - in App notification back in early April 2024.

Just to support what ​@jgatie mentions above - here is a screen-capture recording from my Sonos App made a few moments ago - it shows my local library working here - I chose ‘Mike & The Mechanics’ just to go along with part of your username. See attached - the library is shared using the SMBv3 protocol.

Well good for you. As previously stated I have followed those steps several times, on multiple machines, with no success and I am far from being the only person with this problem.

They ‘fixed’ a problem that did not exist and, in doing so, took away the functionality a lot of users wanted.

Personally, I am so over it with Sonos. What I currently have is a Spoitify player and nothing more. As my moral objections to Spotify’s unconscionable business practises increase, it’s just a matter of time before another eight Sonos products end up in landfill.
