[bug] content from Pocket Casts service not displayed in playlists on Android since version 85.00.31

Hi,

Since update 85.00.31 (Android) of the app, content from Pocket Casts service is not shown in playlists containing it.

Here is the playlist list from my system. The playlist Podkassos currently contains only podcast episodes from the same podcast. The picture generated for the playlist is correctly using the pictures from the episodes.

Playlist list

When I look at the content of that playlist, the message says there is no content.

No content shown in the sonos app

The same content shown in the alternative app noson correctly show the content of the playlist.

playlist not empty in noson

The playlist can be enqueued and played. The queued list correctly shows the episodes.

Visible in the queued list

If I add a track from my library to the queue list, sonos only displays it while noson correctly displays everything.

only the track not from Pocket Casts visible in sonos
Everything visible in noson

I had the opportunity to test the app version 85.00.31 on my android and on an iphone on another system. The iphone app correctly shown the content of the playlist while my android was not. I didn’t take screenshot at the time.

(I’m pretty sure it’s just a rendering problem on android. While trying to display elements from Pocket Casts, an NPE or another Exception is triggered and quietly swallowed, blocking these elements to be displayed. Should not be very hard to fix.)

My system if it can be of any help. Don’t hesitate to ask if you need help to reproduce the problem.

You really should report this to Sonos Support, not just to us other users here in the community forum.

I’ve sent a diagnostic of my system through the app.

Still broken in 87.00.35 (Android).

(The new tab navigation is nice, it feels like going back to the app **before** that stupid new UI. 2 years later and loosing a  lot of money and trust, sonos is nearly back where it was then. That's real good management 🙄.)

One has to wonder if this is a bug on the PocketCast side of things, perhaps with their translation package sending data through? While reporting it to Sonos, as you have, is a good thing, have you similarly reported it to PockectCasts? They might be more receptive to feedback from you than having it filtered through the Sonos organization..under the assumption it is their error. I’ve got nothing if it’s on Sonos’ side of things.

As long as the bug is only in the android version of sonos and not in the iOS one, I'd say it's purely a sonos problem.

And I think it's a problem with the presentation of the content from PocketCasts in playlists as :

  • even not visible, the content is “in” the playlist and the image associated with the episode is used to generate the picture of the playlist
  • the content is visible in the playing queue and can be played

I think a field is missing or have changed in the object representing the episode, and when trying to display it, an Exception is raised, certainly an NPE or a conversion one from a String to another type. That exception is silently swallowed and the element is skipped on display and only on display.

There is the workaround to use noson when needing to edit playlist. Let's hope it will be fixed someday in the android app.

I mostly use sonos to play podcast episodes, maintaining a playlist of what is currently in queue. So I'm always hit by that bug.
