Question

Amp Multi to support Arc Surrounds

I have a Sonos Amp Multi and want to use 1 of the 4 zones as a Surrounds for my Arc.  I used to do this with my dedicated Connect:Amp.  I got the Amp multi to replace all of my Connect:Amps.  The single Sonos Amp product allows to pair with an Arc for surrounds, but the Amp Multi cannot for 1 of its 4 zones.

I’m not sure you’ve asked a question, or just advised us that the Amp Multi can’t be used to drive surrounds? But I think you’re right, in the same way it has no HDMI input for home theatre setups.

Your installer should have made that limitation clear to you during the system design phase of the purchase and installation process.

Certainly in the forum post they made, this was pretty clear:

  • Not a Home Theater Device: There are no HDMI ports (no ARC or eARC). The Amp Multi is strictly designed for distributed audio. It cannot act as a primary home theater player, nor as surrounds for another product.

What I don’t have access to is the documentation provided to your installer, or with the device itself.

Which ultimately makes this a feature request. Challenged, I suspect, by the electronics inside the box.

Perhaps there will be a future version targeted at home users, but since the convenience of “wireless” is so popular, there may not be much interest. Maybe there would be enough interest by users updating existing, legacy wired setups.

One clarification...the Connect:Amp does not have an HDMI port and still is able to be set up for Surrounds to add/pair with Arc Ultra.  I don’t believe this is about hardware or HDMI ports, as Amp Multi has more advanced hardware than the solo Amp.  This seems like a pure feature release given how few Amp Multis have been sold so far.  Hoping they can update with software, so I can stop using the Connect:Amp for my surrounds zone paired to my Arc.

I would expect that would require an update to the electronics supplied in the Sonos Amp multi. After all, why pay for more expensive capable chips when it isn’t necessary, per the specs as released.

I can understand the desire, but I don’t see it as a software update. It would also require, I think, some odd (haven’t really thought it through yet) labeling on the device, to define which speaker connections are being used as rear surrounds. And could it be more than one soundbar, or just a single one? That would require more labeling on the speaker posts. And if it’s two soundbars, why not more? It gets more and more challenging.
