Hi everyone, I have recently upgraded my system with Sonos Arc Ultra and two ERA 300. In order to connect to my projector BENQ 2700 i (no eARC but 2 HDMI ports that supports audio return) I also got a HD Fury Arcana 2 8.1 . In my initial set up I get sound from the Arc Ultra and ERAs when streaming music. I however can not get sound through the Arcana  when connected to the projector (or TV).

When I first initiated setting up the ARC to projector (TV) it refused as it could not connect to CEC.

Sonos support was unhelpful and informed me that Sonos is primarily developed for TVs and they were unable to help.

I therefore bought a small Phillips TV (24PHS6808/12) with CEC which I plan to return after successful setup with my BenQ projector.

The ARC then concluded TV set up and confirmed that ArC Ultra was connected to to the TV. I hoped that this golden handshake would solve my problems. I did however  not get any sound from the ARC even though I checked TV settings and have activated it’s audio out HDMI  sound system and digital out format set to multi channel. I also have Easy link activated to be able to connect CEC compatible devices.

I see TV as source in Sonos App but no sound from Arc Ultra.

I use new hdmi 2.1,cables.

I continued and tried to connect my BenQ projector and ARC Ultra  via the Arcana 2 with no success I.e no sound from ARzc Ultra .  This is of course the important set up as I normally only use my BENQ projector instead of a TV. I have the following set up:

Source Mac Pro computer. Connected to Arcana 2 HDMI IN. BenQ projector (audio return activated) connected to Arcana 2 HDMI Out. Arc Ultra connected to Arcana 2’s eARC out .

I get no sound and the Sonos App shows “no content”.

I have tried rebooting Router, Arc Ultra, Projector (TV) Computer and Mobile Phone (App).

Does anyone have any suggestions regarding how I can get this to work?

Many thanks from frustrated hopeful.

Hi @Sunandmoon

Welcome to the Sonos Community!

I am afraid the amount of help I can give you is limited for two reasons - one is that we do not support the use of HD Fury Arcana (but that does not mean that it will not work) and the second is that when I bought a HD Fury Arcana myself, I could not get it to work - though I understand this to have been due to a faulty Arcana. Certainly, if nothing is reported as connected to the output port on the Arcana’s screen (the issue I had), you will not get audio from the projector playing.

If I recall correctly, I may have seen someone mention that they needed to connect their soundbar directly to a TV to get CEC working, then could connect to the Arcana instead (which seems similar to what you did with the TV you bought - the fact that there was no audio this way is concerning).

Incidentally, you should be able to get sound by connecting the soundbar to the projector permanently, without the Arcana - lossless audio codecs that need eARC are not supplied via streaming services, so if you don’t watch Blu-Rays, you probably don’t need eARC/Arcana, as Atmos can be delivered over HDMI-ARC as Dolby Digital + (Atmos). I’d certainly try it even if just to see if things are working without the Arcana, as a test.

One thought - please use the HDMI cable supplied with your Arc Ultra.

And one final thought - you are selecting the TV source in the Sonos app, while the Arc Ultra’s room is selected in the app, yes?

I recommend trying to get audio from the TV or projector without the use of the Arcana, at first, at least - if you cannot do so, I recommend you get in touch with our technical support team who have tools at their disposal that will allow them to give you advice specific to your Sonos system and what it reports. Only once that is working would I suggest adding the Arcana to the mix (I am aware that the Arcana is supposed to help with this, but as you have two devices that should work with your Arc Ultra, I recommend troubleshooting with the simpler setup first).

I hope this helps.

I don’t disagree with Corry at all, only that I would first question whether the Mac is actually sending audio via HDMI.  Have you confirmed this yet?  I didn’t see that mentioned anywhere but it’s possible that the source is only sending video, no audio.  Since you aren’t getting sound via the projector or TV, that seems to be the common denominator.

So I would connect the MAC to the projector and see if you get audio from the projector’s speaker.  Perhaps do the same with the TV.

Another test I would do is playing some audio from the TVs smart apps.  Do you get audio through TV speakers that way?  If so, then connect your Arc Ultra to the TV, playing smart apps, and see if you get audio.

One other issue I would look at is, while connected with the Arcana and Arc Ultra, I would turn off ARC and CEC features on your TV/projector.  These are not needed when using Arcana, as one of the main points of Arcana is to use with TVs/projectors that don’t have these features.

I do own the original Arcana, but as Corry pointed out, I don’t really need it.  My TV is older and only has ARC capabilities, but 99% of the content I watch is streaming.   I got the Arcana when it first released and was significantly cheaper than it is now.  If/when I get an Arc Ultra,  I imagine I will need to take it out of the scheme to complete Ultra setup, and won’t bother to put it back in once everything is working.
