Where to start?

I am starting from a scratch. In one room we have four speaker wires to a central location. In the other room we have two speaker wires to a central location and want to add a sound bar.

Where do I start? Sonos is clearly the best. What equipment do I need for a wired system? How much space will I need for any amp or similar?

Thank you!

Are the wires eminating from speakers already installed such as in-ceiling or In-wall? If so, we need to know where the speakers are located in reference to where a TV will be placed and your seating area.

Also, how are you using the Connect:Amp that shows in your profile?

  • Saying you have “wires to a central location”  doesn’t explain much 😊

A diagram would be most helpful.

Wires are installed in ceiling. For the living room please see below image. Purple dots are the speaker, blue line to show rough plan of the wires. In the kitchen there will be four speakers (one in each corner of the room) and the wires could run anywhere. Each room is about 3.7m x 7.5m

Have you done any research to see what your options are, from any manufacturer other than Sonos?
Why is Sonos “clearly the best”?

Can you not read the user guide to know the location options for Amp?

Other than where you already have wired speakers, why use Sonos - a leading wireless speaker supplier - for a wired setup?
Am I missing something in your setup or intended installation?

As explained I am starting from scratch with no idea. I was told by our electrician Sonos was the best, but did not tell me it was a wireless brand.

If you are happy to send me the link to the 'user guide' then I will obviously read it, but don't know what you're talking about.

So you've done no research of your own!

Sonos website: https://www.sonos.com/en-us/home   Follow and explore any links there to learn more. There’s also a search button if you want to find particular info. To be fair, it’s a “whole home” system, but with a large proportion of wireless devices rather than conventional wired speakers in the product lineup.

Amp info here: https://www.sonos.com/en-us/shop/amp As you read down the page you’ll learn more, and find links to FAQ’s and the Product Guide. (Sorry: I referred to it earlier as the user guide.)

There’s clearly a lot of mis-understanding between you and your electrician. 😂

Wireless for Sonos:

  • Means that speakers in different “rooms” can play the same music or different music at the same time via the Sonos App installed on a cell phone or tablet using your home Wi-Fi.

What your electrician most likely meant:

  • Using your in-ceiling speakers they can be powered by a Sonos Amp (or your current Connect:Amp) to send music to the room of your choice.
  • A Sonos Amp can power four (4) third party in-celing speakers.
  • However if those four (4) speakers are located in different rooms (two each) powered by the same Amp all four will play the same music.
  • You would need two Amps for each pair of speakers to play different music in each room.
  • However, Sonos (via the app) allows you to “Group” rooms together to play the same music

Thank you for the diagram.

  • However, it’s too convoluted with lines and circles to determine where the in-ceiling speakers are located.
  • The Blue lines are unnecessary and just add to the confusion.
  • Just show us were the speakers are located.
  • Also, you mentioned “Kitchen” as a room. All I see labeled is “Lounge”.

In the end

  • It may be to your advantage to consult a Professional Installer (instead of your electrician) to determine the best path forward to use Sonos or another solution. 😊
