I have two tower speakers (Polk Audio Monitor 70 II series) that I want to connect to the sonos system. The two options are direct from a Sonos Connect AMP (55W/channel), vs with Sonos Connect wired to a standard amp/receiver. Do you think the Sonos Connect AMP is powerful enough to power these big speakers? I'd honestly like to get rid of the amp...

These are 8 ohm speakers and reasonably efficient. The Connect Amp will work fine.
Another possibility is to get a Connect and a simple amp that has the power output you want. Maybe something like this at 150 watts? The speaker's minimum acceptable power is only 20 watts and the max is 275 so the Connect Amp isn't going to be a problem unless you like really loud. I wouldn't consider an external amp over the Connect Amp for less than the 150 watt or higher power levels unless you need a mono-mode output as there wouldn't be a lot of audible difference. You'd also give up the Connect Amp's power management of the amplifier section.
