Sonos 5

I am planning to buy a Sonos 5 and am going to use it dedicatedly for music.

However, my concern is about its reliability in terms of hardware and software.

I have read several reviews where people complained that the Sonos 5 stopped working abruptly within 6 months or 1 year, and after that there was no resolution. Now those speakers are just like heavy paperweights.

And this is not just one person writing this; there are several comments from multiple customers reporting such issues.

If someone is spending such a big amount of money, at least they expect the product to last for years.

Hence, need genuine suggestions before buying a Sonos 5.

Not seen any trend regarding the Sonos Five. I had my old Play 5 gen 1 fail after just over two years and was offered a very good deal on the 2nd Gen which i was happy about. The latest Five is S2 compatible and a recent generation model so should have plenty of life in it and take new features as they arrive.

There’s always the exceptions but in general I’d consider Sonos support to be good. After all this forum is not inundated with such issues.

The common theme here is connectivity issues, normally resolved by Sonos or advice from forum members.

There was an apparent issue with the Play:5 Gen 2 having some sort of radio problem.  However the Play:5 Gen 2 was last manufactured in 2020.

I personally have a pair of Fives for a few years and they have been 100% reliable.

I've too have had two Fives since they were released (2020) and, if it is not tempting fate, they have been 100% reliable as well...

Traded off my Play 5 gen 1s, still using my Play 5 gen2, haven't the need for a Five but I wouldn't hesitate to buy one.

The option of purchasing an extended warranty is available. For me that would have been wasted money as nothing broke.

In a thread about the Sonos Five it is very good to read this kind of well substantiated advice.

Play 5. Unreliable

@Gmichaelwallace: Your profile says you have a Gen 1 Play:5, which has been out of production for many years. Even the Gen 2 was discontinued about 5 years ago. (My Gen 2 is still going strong, for the record. I don’t have a Five to comment on their reliability.) This post asks about the Five.

Play 5 never stays paired

Play 5 never stays paired

Then you should post in a thread discussing the reliability of the Play:5.  Right now you are doing the equivalent of posting in a thread discussing the reliability of the 2021 Toyota Camry saying your 1995 Supra is unreliable.

I’m sorry your original question is being disregarded, @Saurabharo. But perhaps, from the lack of folk saying that they’ve had issues with their Five, it can be assumed that they are reliable.

I’ve certainly not seen a lot of threads regarding reliability of the Sonos Five, the PLAY:5 gen 2, or even the PLAY:5 gen 1.

Any manufacturing will have minuscule errors, it’s one of the reasons companies have guarantees for a certain amount of time. Sonos is so reputable that they even offer a one time upgrade guarantee for their older devices. You can see the details of this on their website.

I’ve been using my PLAY:5 gen 2s since they came out, in 2015. Never had an issue with them, or any other of my 20+ Sonos speakers. Never felt the need to update them to Sonos Fives.

Note, Sonos doesn’t make a 5. The current version is called the Sonos Five.

Jumping in here a little late, but I have had all generations of the “Five”: ZonePlayer S5, a play 5 Gen 1, Play Five Gen 2 and the Five. I have not experienced any WiFi issues with any of them.

I currently use a Play 5 Gen 2 and a Five. I have no issues grouping them with other speakers in my home.

Can you provide links to the post you have read about Fives being unreliable?

I wonder if there is more of a network issue than a hardware issue that is causing them to appear faulty.
