Hi Sonos Community,
I’m in the process of setting up a multi-room audio system using Sonos products and could use some advice on optimizing my setup. Here’s a summary of my current configuration and what I’m looking to achieve:
Current Setup:
- Sonos Products:
- Sonos One (x2) in the living room
- Sonos Beam in the living room
- Sonos Move in the outdoor patio
- Network: Home Wi-Fi network with a mesh router system
- Primary Use: Streaming music throughout the house, including the patio area
Questions:
- Optimizing Sound Quality: What are the best practices for ensuring consistent and high-quality audio across different rooms? Are there specific settings or adjustments in the Sonos app that can help improve audio performance?
You should run Trueplay on all speakers/rooms ensure the best and optimised sound output from your speakers for each room.
If streaming music, always go for a service that offers the highest quality supported by Sonos - namely Apple Music (which plays in Lossless, and also in Dolby Atmos where your speakers support that), Amazon Music, and Quboz. Perhaps Tidal too but not sure.
Every speaker has an EQ. Adjust to taste.
- Room Calibration: How important is room calibration, and what steps should I take to calibrate my Sonos system for the best sound experience in each room?
Very important. Use Trueplay on each speaker, as mentioned. You can run this calibration from the app.
- Integration and Control: Are there any tips for integrating Sonos with smart home systems (e.g., Alexa, Google Assistant) for seamless control and automation?
I used to use my Amazon Echo to control the Sonos, but got rid of the Echo as I barely used it, so I currently use Sonos’ built in voice control (on applicable speakers) to control playback outside of the app. It works well, especially as I’m a fan of Gus from Breaking Bad...
- Dealing with Connectivity Issues: I occasionally experience connectivity issues between my Sonos devices. Are there any troubleshooting steps or tips to improve network stability and ensure smooth communication between devices?
This is far too big a subject to cover here. The release of the new app in May created massive headaches for some people. My system works but the CEO has needed to apologise this week for rolling out an app that has made users’ experience worse. So you may or may not have a system that works well. (The advice used to be to plug one speaker in with ethernet to create SonosNet, the speakers’ own network for communicating outside of home wifi. But this is no longer the recommendation, as all the speakers you have are fine to work off of wifi.
So no tips really. You’ll have to come back on here if you have issues, or call Sonos directly.
- Expanding the System: I’m considering adding more Sonos speakers in additional rooms. Any recommendations for which models would complement my current setup and provide a balanced sound experience?
The Arc is far superior to the Beam if your room will accommodate it, with native Dolby Atmos where the signal received is Atmos (the Beam has simulated Dolby Atmos as it doesn’t have any up firing speakers). With that, you would be advised for home theatre to get a Sub (optional) and use the 2 x Ones as surrounds if they are already in the same room as the Beam (ensure they are set up as surrounds and not was a stereo pair if you want them for home theatre). The best surrounds are the Era 300s as they support Dolby Atmos with upfiring speakers, but Ones, One SLs, or Era 100s are great too). The Arc/Sub/Surrounds set-up is absolutely awesome with the right content. You can adjust the surrounds for TV and music levels separately.
Otherwise, the Era 300 for standalone music (or a pair) would be the top choice outside of a home theatre setup. The Era 100 is largely a replacement for the Sonos One, but the difference isn’t that much other than the Era 100 plays stereo from one speaker, whereas the One is largely excellent mono, as you will know.
I would greatly appreciate any advice, tips, or personal experiences you can share to help me get the most out of my Sonos system. Looking forward to your insights!
Thanks in advance for your help!
Best regards,
Jamie
