Looking for help as a newbie with Sonos.

We are building a new home and want to ensure solid audio in the living room (especially for TV), gym, and rumpus room.

Any suggestions? Do we need an in-floor power point behind the couch in the large open-plan area to plug in surround speakers? Any other tips would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @Audioseeking

Welcome to the Sonos Community!

You have not given any indication of budget, so I’ll just throw some ideas out.

You said “especially for TV”, so lets start there. The Sonos Arc Ultra is our flagship product, and is recommended for larger TVs and rooms. By itself, it delivers Dolby Atmos 9.1.4  audio, but once you add surrounds and Sub(s) to it, this becomes even more enveloping. Add two Era 100 or Era 300 speakers as surrounds, and Sub(s) or Sub Mini to complete the set. You can buy them all as a set, should you wish. There's also the smaller Beam Gen 2, which is still Atmos capable, but contains fewer drivers.

As the back of your sofa is fairly open, I would recommend installing power sockets in the floor if you can’t hide power cables under the sofa, yes. None of our battery-powered speakers support being part of a Home Theatre setup, so power will be needed (unless you were to opt for a Sonos Amp to power passive speakers at the back, but you’d still a cable for each)

For your other named rooms, it depends on what you want - if you want each room to be filled with sound, I’d recommend a pair of speakers for each room: Era 100, Era 300 or Fives. Obviously, the bigger the speaker the bigger the sound. If you just want background music, one speaker may suffice. Importantly, Sonos systems are modular, so if you decide one speaker in a room is not enough, just add another at a later date! Or, if two is too much, move one to another room somewhere.

For the Kitchen, I’d recommend a speaker with a microphone for Voice Assistants - the Era 100 would probably be best. Or a Move 2, for it’s portability.

I hope this helps. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate.

That's all within budget. Just one follow-up question: Could we mount the surrounds in the wall or ceiling for similar sound, or are the ones behind the couch on floor stands going to be much better?

Hi @Audioseeking

Although we do support inverted mounting of Era 300 surrounds, it is better to have them close to head-height, so yes, I would recommend stands over ceiling mounting. Also, we don’t have ceiling mounts - just wall mounts - so without a nearby wall, it would be difficult to do in the first place.

You can mount Era 300s to the wall, not in the wall (we do sell in-wall speakers, but they are passive and must be used in conjunction with an Amp). You could certainly do this with the left surround as there is a wall there - you could buy one stand (for the right speaker) and one wall mount (for the left).

I hope this helps.
