Afternoon everyone,

I’m building a 24’x36’ garage gym and want to build a surround sound system that will rattle your bones when lifting. I powerlift and want something that melts your face when you’re going for a personal record on deadlifts or heavy squats! I know very little about what setup would be the best to go with and was hoping for some guidance and recommendations on what you think would be the best for that. I appreciate any feedback.

Sonos Port.

Third party hefty multi-channel Amp.

Large floor standing or similar speakers. At least four, maybe six.

Can you tell us a little about your music sources?

I’m not entirely sure what you’re looking for. I apologize for the lack of knowledge in my end. I’d be using Bluetooth primarily for music.

Sorry, I was curious what streaming service(s) you would be playing. Also, do you have ‘local’ music stored on a computer, tablet, or phone?

But your answer is enlightening: if you’ve got a phone that plays all your music--streaming or otherwise--then you can use a simple usb-to-3.55mm cable* to connect your phone to an amp. That is what I am doing in my own garage! You’ll get great sound quality (better than Bluetooth) and it is super-simple. No need for Sonos or another “wireless music” system.

* if you have an older iPhone, you would use a lightning-to-3.55mm cable

I lift with a Move. But I think you want something different haha. Port and a big amp + speakers/subs.

Maybe some Fives and Subs but it’d probably be cheaper to go with non-Sonos speakers.

I gotcha, and yes my phone would be the primary source. I’ve had an Amazon special kit for the past 4 years and it finally gave out. Just wanted to upgrade to a better quality system overall. I appreciate all the input gents, thank you!

You might want to check out the comments on the new app before you commit to Sonos.

Will do, thank you for the heads up. The reason I was looking at this route is because Coop from Garage Gym reviews was suggesting putting up a couple Sonos Ones. That’s how he had his setup but I wasn’t sure if that would be enough for the space I’m about to have.

Two Ones and a Sub Mini sound surprisingly good. But your space is pretty large. A couple Fives could probably do it, and if you get a Sub or two, it will offload low crews from the Fives, making their job easier.

Awesome, thank you for the advice! I’ll definitely look at getting some, thank you everyone!

Looking at the other comments.

Ones and a mini Sub would likely rock a 10x10 foot room, going to sound good but not rocking loud in anything much bigger. That is my room size and two Ones and a full Sub play quite loud but it isn’t shaking the room if I leave the controls set flat.

In that space I’d not expect four Fives to hit your desired sound levels. Six might.

Add in that you can only tie the sub to a single Five or a Stereo Pair of Fives and you’ll be seeing mismatches in sound levels between the different Fives. I’d expect mono sound to be your best option in that space limiting you even more.

Based on your desired volume levels I ruled out a Sonos Amp and their outdoor/architectural speaker lines. I’d expect the Amp to run out of power and/or the maximum clean volume level of the speakers to be too low. Still if you are willing to accept lower volume levels an Amp and six speakers would be a nice setup. That would also work well with a Sonos Sub (not sure if you could add two Gen 3 Subs to the Amp but if you can I would) as it would be bonded to all the speakers so the frequency response would be identical.

My old 3 car garage system (wife evicted it from the living room) was a pair of Klipsch La Scallas and a 600 Watt amp, it would rock that space.

That’s good info that know. Yeah I’ve only ever had a two car garage so I’ve never needed anything huge. But since the one died, it’s time for a serious upgrade!
