I have a Play 3 speaker and what to add a turntable to our system. 
can anyone advise if this is possible?

You can get turntables that stream a wireless signal, that are compatible - eg the Victrola Stream. If you already have the turntable you’ll need to set it to pre-amp output level, if available, or buy a pre-amp, and get a Sonos device with a line input such as the Era 100 or 300.

It is not possible with play:3 speakers alone.  You would need to add a Sonos product with a aux line input or bluetooth that can connect to the turntable.  There are also some new turntables that can connect to Sonos directly, but I have no experience with them.
