Turntable to sonos connect (gen 2) - buzzing sound, need preamp?

I have an older turntable (Audio Technica AT-PL120) with no built-in preamp or ground connect. This connects directly to my Sonos Connect (Gen 2). It plays immediately but I have to raise the Source Level in the app to Level 8 or so. I was wondering if I was losing out on sound quality by doing this. Is this valid?

As a test, I plugged in an old RCA AH500 preamp but it immediately created a loud buzzing when the music started playing. The buzzing only continued with the preamp. When I removed the preamp, no buzzing. The preamp has no ground connect either.

I tried multiple RCA cables, so it’s not that. I figured it’s either an old preamp that’s not working anymore or I have to do something with the ground but I got nothing to connect it to.

Any thoughts on this?

Does the preamp hum without the turntable connected?
