TRNTBL by VNYL is dead — but here's an open-source firmware to stream vinyl to Sonos again

Hey everyone,

I recently came across several threads from people who had issues connecting their TRNTBL turntable to Sonos — including these:

  • Problems connecting TRNTBL to Sonos temporary network (@holyvacants, @ratty, @melvimbe)
  • TRNTBL not always connecting back to Sonos (@OsMo, @Steve_33, @anniemac98, @dukebender, @gwc2929, @abstractismo)
  • Can't connect my TRNTBL to WiFi (@michaelcruz100, @chicks, @Airgetlam, @wjhrdy)

Those threads are now closed — and the reason the TRNTBL stopped working isn't a Sonos issue. VNYL shut down their servers. The original app and cloud infrastructure are gone, which is why every TRNTBL on the planet went silent.

I've been running mine since and built openTRNTBL — an open-source replacement firmware that runs directly on the turntable's onboard computer (a C.H.I.P. SBC). It streams your vinyl to any Sonos speaker on your network via WiFi, with no app, no cloud, no subscription.

What it does:

  • Captures audio from the built-in USB ADC at 48kHz
  • Streams to an Icecast server running on the turntable itself
  • Sends the stream to any Sonos speaker via UPnP/SOAP
  • Web dashboard to control playback, switch speakers, manage WiFi

It's free, open-source, and installable if you're comfortable with a terminal.

If your TRNTBL is collecting dust, it doesn't have to be. Happy to answer questions here.

Hi Ismail,

I just recently purchased this record player, unfortunately I didn’t know the app was discontinued.  Do you know if you can still run this without ever setting it up on your wifi or am I SOL?  Thank you by the way

It’s not that the app is discontinued.  The original company no longer exist, thus the servers they ran in order to support their turntable on Sonos are no longer running.  The OP has created a workaround for the missing servers, but it requires a bit of tech savvy.  Other than that, there’s nothing anyone can do, save resurrecting a dead company.

I understood that, what I meant is that in the GitHub setup using terminal it has it that the device is discoverable through terminal commands.  What I was asking was if the device can still be setup using his workaround or if because it was never setup to my wifi I am unable to use opentrntbl
