TRNTBL by VNYL is dead — but here's an open-source firmware to stream vinyl to Sonos again

Hey everyone,

I recently came across several threads from people who had issues connecting their TRNTBL turntable to Sonos — including these:

  • Problems connecting TRNTBL to Sonos temporary network (@holyvacants, @ratty, @melvimbe)
  • TRNTBL not always connecting back to Sonos (@OsMo, @Steve_33, @anniemac98, @dukebender, @gwc2929, @abstractismo)
  • Can't connect my TRNTBL to WiFi (@michaelcruz100, @chicks, @Airgetlam, @wjhrdy)

Those threads are now closed — and the reason the TRNTBL stopped working isn't a Sonos issue. VNYL shut down their servers. The original app and cloud infrastructure are gone, which is why every TRNTBL on the planet went silent.

I've been running mine since and built openTRNTBL — an open-source replacement firmware that runs directly on the turntable's onboard computer (a C.H.I.P. SBC). It streams your vinyl to any Sonos speaker on your network via WiFi, with no app, no cloud, no subscription.

What it does:

  • Captures audio from the built-in USB ADC at 48kHz
  • Streams to an Icecast server running on the turntable itself
  • Sends the stream to any Sonos speaker via UPnP/SOAP
  • Web dashboard to control playback, switch speakers, manage WiFi

It's free, open-source, and installable if you're comfortable with a terminal.

If your TRNTBL is collecting dust, it doesn't have to be. Happy to answer questions here.
