sonos port and turntable

Forum|alt.badge.img

Hi guys,

I own a turntable (with built in pre-amp), third part speakers (also with a pre amp) and have recently got Sonos. I bought a port because I want to be able to play the turntable music in other rooms.

I know i can simply plug in the port line-in to the turntable so the RCA plugs and it plays around the house) but then not over the third party speakers.

Is there a way to have the third party speakers still play the record while the Sonos speakers plays it around the house? I thought I’d be able to plug the port into the pre amp on the third party speakers but it doesn’t work.

i can’t work it out.

cheers

So the Wharfdales are active. Which model?

Connect the turntable to the Port Line-In (which it sounds like you’ve already done).

Connect the Port Line-Out or digital out to the speakers.

Ensure that the Port is playing its own Line-In, whether directly or as part of a group.

Hi

Prior to getting Sonos speakers (If I understand your post) at present you have a Turntable with a built-in pre-amp and you use another pre-amp for the speakers. What brand of speakers are they? Are they not powered?

Just to see if I understand your set up. A turntable needs a preamp to get to a line level output that can be used by a Port. Passive speakers are powered by amps that deliver a much higher powered signal to the speakers. If I understand you okay you are using a preamp to feed the Port “in”  and have the amp for your passive speakers connected to the Port “out”?

When using your turntable you should choose the “Line in” source in the Sonos app and the choose the “in” you connected your Port to on the amp that your passive speakers are connected to.

When I look at https://www.wharfedale.co.uk/activespeakers/ I see that these speakers have a 3,5mm or RCA in, depending on which model you own?

@Stada536

Glad we now know that your speakers are “powered”. You should be able to get the TT sound to your Sonos by following @ratty’s suggestion.

You can also designate a particular Sonos speaker to auto play when using the Ports line-in. However if the Era 100’s are used as surrounds with the Arc they cannot be designated so you would have to select the Arc.

Out of curiosity how are you using with the Sonos Amp?

the speakers are by LEAK, produced for an 80th anniversary thing. Which speaker port should I connect the port line out to? Theirs a couple of aux options and a phono and a pre

@AjTrek1 Who’s using a Sonos Amp?

@Stada536 How did we get from Wharfedale to LEAK speakers? Why are you using a preamp when there’s a phono in?

A picture of the connections (at least) would do wonders…..

When I googled I couldn’t immediately find any actives, only ‘Heritage’ passives. Could you post a link, or even a photo of the rear of a speaker?

@106rallye

Check the OP’s profile. Just curious what the Amp is being used with?

Connect the Port Line-Out RCAs to one of the AUX inputs, or digital out to the COAX input.

I’ve tried the aux option. Nothing plays through the turntable speakers if I do that

Did you instruct the Port to play? Try an internet radio station as a test.

The port plays the TT through the Sonos speakers just fine with the line in function. But I also want the active TT speakers (LEAK/Wharfedale to play the TT simultaneously).

I didnt think this would be complicated...

You’ve been instructing the Sonos speakers to play the Port’s Line-In, which is fine. I’m asking whether you’ve asked the Port itself to play anything through its outputs into the Leak amp when that has an AUX input selected.

It really isn't that complicated.

I plugged the RCA from TT to the Line In. on Port as suggested. I plugged another RCA from Line Out on port to AUX. Nothing played through the TT

I don't know what this means.

I asked: have you instructed the Port’s ‘room’ to play anything -- it could be Line-In, it could be internet radio, anything basically -- then switched the Leak to AUX input and turned it up? You have to initiate play on the Port’s ‘room’ before any signal will be sent to the Leak’s AUX input.

their are no SONOs speakers in the room with turntable/LEAK speakers and the port. The port plays fine to the other rooms in the house where SONOS speakers are

I don’t seem to be getting a straight answer.

Ignore the Sonos speakers for the moment.

You have the following wired chain, right? TT → Port → Leak amp → Wharfedale speakers

A simple question: have you selected the Port’s room and told it to play anything?

Sorry. I appreciate you help.

System is: TT-Port-Leak/Wharfedale Speakers

I dont have seperate amp but both the TT and speakers have pre-amps.

And as i said. The port plays line in from the TT just fine to SONOS speakers around the house

On the system tab of your Sonos app (the middle one), tap on the Port’s room.

Tap on the Browse tab (the second from left). Tap on Sonos Radio. Play any station you like.

Does the Leak amp play the AUX through the Wharfedales or not?

I'm at work so will try that when I get home. I do not have a separate amp. I have a TT and then active speakers (but both the TT and speakers have a pre-amp setting)
