Pro-ject T1 Phono SB + Era 300 + Beam

Dear friends and experts,

I already own a Beam (gen 2) and I’m using it for the tv and to stream some music.

I’d like to buy a turntable (Pro-ject T1 Phono SB, with integrated phono preamp) and directly connect it to a Era 300 using the line in of the Era 300.

Can I then pair the Era 300 and the Beam with the sonos app in order to play simultaneously the vynil? Do you expect to have some kind of latency?

Honestly I still have to decide if I’ll buy an Era 300 or 2 Era 100 but let’s see the answers to my question before.

Kind Regards.

Hi

Setting the Era speaker as a room is precisely what you want to do. You can group the Era and Beam to hear vinyl on both together.

What you can’t do is set Era speakers as surrounds and connect a turntable via line-in as the line-in functionality is disabled. However if you only purchase a single Era speaker setting it as a surround is not possible anyway.

If you want to use an Era 300 for Dolby Atmos music streaming that is fine. In fact you can do so without removing the turntable.

@Cleto Truffo

Yes, this is possible, if the Era speaker(s) is/are set up as an own room/ configuration. The line in function will be disabled, if a pair of speakers is bonded to a home theater device like your Beam as surround speakers.
Depending of your room situation I would prefer grouping a single Era speaker (connected with the phono via Sonos line in adapter) or a stereo pair of Eras with your Beam.

Great answer by @Schlumpf

You also asked if you should purchase an Era 300 or Era 100. I suggest you purchase the Era 100 either as single or two to create a stereo pair. By creating a stereo pair you can listen to your vinyl in stereo without grouping it to the Beam 2 (if you desire).

An Era 300 would be overkill as it is designed for Dolby Atmos music in addition to stereo. A turntable will not provide Dolby Atmos. You’d be better advised to purchase a Five instead.

 Thanks both @Schlumpf and @AjTrek1,

correct me if I’m wrong. That means that If if I set the Era speaker(s) up as an own room/configuration I’ll will never be able to listen to music (from the turntable or from a streaming service) simultaneously from the Era AND the Beam?

@AjTrek1 I would rather go for an Era 300 as long as also my Beam support Dolby Atmos and it would be great to be able to use both sources in Dolby Atmos through the streaming services that support this format. This is just an idea and I’m open to any of your suggestions.

Thanks again everyone for the prompt answer.

Hello guys,

I have a similar question and I am not sure to understand correctly. I am renovating a house and here is the setup I am thinking of and what I would like to do:

TV setup in dolby atmos : Arc + Sub + pair of ERA 300

Living room : Pro-ject T1 Phono SB connected with one ERA 300 (line-in)

Will this work ? Or do I need another line-in compatible sonos (ERA 100 ? or Five ?) with my turntable and then I will be able to group this with my dolby atmos setup?

Thanks a lot for your help!

David

Hi

@dadalook

Unfortunately you cannot connect a turntable to the line-in of a surround speaker as the line-in and BT are disabled. Your options for the turntable are:

Purchase Another Era 300, 100, Five or Sonos Port.

I’d recommend two Era 100’s set as stereo pair to allow the turntable to play independently if desired with full stereo. You can still sync the TT audio with your home theater setup.

In case you’re wondering the sub will only join the TT audio when synced with your home theater. There’s also the option to remove the sub from the home theater and bond it to the Era’s and reverse the process to bring it back to the home theater. Believe me THAT’S A LOT OF WORK 😂

Edit: If you want to use the speakers connected to the TT with Dolby Atmos music you’ll need to purchase 1 or 2 Era 300’s. They can be used without removing the TT.

If I read your drawing right, you want to connect the turntable to one of the surrounds. This will not work. You need to buy either an extra Sonos Five, Port, Era 100 or 300 (with adapter) to connect your turntable to. You set up up as a new “room” in the Sonos app and you might “group” it with your surround set up. See

edit: @AjTrek1 beat me to it.

A big thanks for your replies guys! I wouldn’t mind another advice. Where do you think I should place the ERA 100 (x2) or the Five? Option A / B /C ? Another option you see?

If I go for one Five only, is it possible to have stereo with the nearest era 300?

I would like good sound in the cosy living room and music coming from there should spread well enough in the dining room.

Big thanks

I think your best option is “A” as a stereo pair. The music will sweep the entire area. Option “B” places the music to the back of some and off-center/diagonally to others. Furthermore using option “B” requires that the entire HT setup play the music as you cannot isolate an Era 300 being used as a surround.

Option:

You could bond a sub-mini to the Era 100’s to further enhance the sound. I use a sub-mini with a stereo pair of Era 100’s mounted in my garage. Yeah...I said garage...I’m very serious about my music 😂
