Hi All, I know that ‘using Sonos for vinyl’ has been covered and I have read the posts, but I am still unsure about a few questions. Sorry.

My current active speakers (TUK Kanto) have died after less than 5 years ☹️) and I have no vinyl music.  I have three early Sonos One speakers that I use for my computer and in the living room so I wondered HOW I can ‘go Sonos’ for my record player?

I understand that I will need a ‘phono preamp’ for the deck.  That’s easy to buy at JBHIFi or wherever.

But then, will that alone allow me to play the record player through my existing first gen Sonos 1 speakers?  If ‘yes’, will the record player somehow stream to these speakers wirelessly with the pre-amp added?

If not, do I need the phono preamp and something else?  I would consider two new Sonos speakers (maybe 5s or similar) IF they allowed me to play my vinyl through them.  Doing this wirelessly would be a big plus but if I had to I don’t mind using connector cables from deck/phone preamp to Sonos Speakers.

My apologies if any of this is blindingly obvious to everyone else but me 🤪.  Many thanks for all specific suggestions.  I am a man on the edge without his record player 😊

The Sonos Five, and the PLAY:5 before it, have a line level line in that works as long as the speakers are not used in a surround sound context. This line in is disabled when the speakers are used as surround speakers.

There are a very few turntables that can connect directly to the Sonos system. All of them, I expect, are covered in various threads here.

In general, Sonos is looking for a ‘line level’ input. Many newer turntables include a preamp, and can be set to output a line level output rather than a phono level output. Often the switches to alter this setting are under the platter, or on the back of the turntable . They normally would be labeled Line/Phono, and should be set on ‘Line’ to work with Sonos. If your turntable doesn’t have this device internally, it is fairly easy to purchase an external device that boosts the output of your turntable from ‘phono’ to ‘line’ levels. Here is a good reference between Phono and Line levels.
